I’m back with another unique list of books to read this winter! I have shared my summer reading list and my favorite fall books, so now it’s time for my favorite amazing books to read this winter!
All my readers know that I like reading in the season. If it is winter, I love a cozy book, with a snowy scene to curl up with my the fire! Summer is all about hot, sultry books or set by the beach. Fall is all about ghost stories, Halloween, pumpkins, etc. In the spring, I need flowers, gardens, and things that get me excited for summer!
These are some of my favorite books I have read over the last 5 or 6 years.
Check out these amazing books to read this winter (or really anytime you want!) Make sure you brew up some delicious winter tea before you dive in!
One. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair by Erik Larson
If you haven’t read his books before, this is the perfect one to try. Anything set back in the the late 1800s in fascinating to me, but this is a true story. All his books are which I love. This is full of murder, mystery and some interesting history!
Two. I’ll Walk Alone by Mary Higgins Clark
I started reading her books back in early high school. They are so easy to read and always have an interesting twist!
Three. Valentine Murder: A Lucy Stone Mystery (Lucy Stone Mysteries) by Leslie Meier
I’ve mentioned her books in my other lists, but it is close to Valentine’s Day, so this is the perfect time to read this one. Her books are really fast reads and always have some murderous twist!
Four. The Paris Wife by Paula McLain
This isn’t unique, everyone has definitely heard of it, but I loved it! I absolutely love any book set in the 1920s and it was so interesting to read about lives back then. It has many different seasons in it, but a great read for winter.
Five. The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty
I am reading this now, almost done, so I had to add it to this list. It is set in the summer, but it just makes a great read for winter, by the fire. Again, it is set in the 1920s, so I had to read it.
Six. The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott
Another 20s era, but it is about on the Titanic and directly after. It was sad, but interesting to read. I am also a sucker for anything about the Titanic, so I had to read this one.
Seven. A is for Alibi (Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mysteries, No. 1) by Sue Grafton
I really love this entire series, but winter is the perfect time to start with number one of this series, if you haven’t read them. It reminds me of an old school private eye movie or show. It always has a great twist in it too.
Eight. Sworn to Silence (Kate Burkholder) by Linda Castillo
This was a murder and thriller for sure! I even saw they made a lifetime movie about it called,An Amish Murder. The movie was actually pretty good and stayed close to the book, but the book was more suspenseful to me!
p.s I bought those pretty red roses at the store over a week ago. There is just something about red roses and winter, don’t you think? I keep them fresh for weeks with my fresh flower tips!
What are your currently reading? I love suggestions!

Adding some of these to my list! Thanks for the suggestions.
Alexis says
Thanks Anne! I hope you find a new good one to read!
Sheryl says
I had not heard of many of these and will certainly consider. Now to just find the time to read everything.
Alexis says
Right?? Finding the time is always what I struggle with. The past few nights, I have been trying to read instead of watching TV. It felt weird at first, but I am beginning to enjoy it 🙂
Charlene says
I’m more of a chick lit kind of girl. But I want to try to read some books with more dram and depth. I’ll check some of these out! thx
Alexis says
I think you may like some of these Charlene! I used to love chick lit, but have gravitated more towards mystery over the last 10 yrs!
Amanda @ Anchored to Sunshine says
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain has been on my bookshelf for FAR TOO LONG! I really need to pick it up and finally read it. I’ve only heard amazing reviews.
Alexis says
I really enjoyed it! It is a little sad at times, but it has an awesome story!
Alanna @ Alanna & Company says
I’ll have to add some of these to my list. I’ve been loving a bunch of Liane Moriarty books recently.
Alexis says
I really lover her stuff too! I need to get some more of her books!

We clearly have the same reading tastes. THANKS for sharing.
Alexis says
That’s awesome! If you have any good recommendations, send them my way 🙂

Hello bookworm Alexis… Great recommendations… I’m not for the vintage or historical settings, but love current day cozy mysteries (usually in small towns). I have never heard of the Alphabet Mystery series – will have to check those out. A few years ago, I tried to read the Leslie Meier holiday mystery series, but couldn’t get “into” them. Maybe I’ll give it another stab (ha ha) later this year. Right now I have a few cozies to read – mystery series about cookie cutters, a diner, donut shop, and a cupcake bakery. And I just got the Candy Cane Killer mystery yesterday! hmmm a lot about food… I bet you would like to twist up the recipes in these books! Happy readying!
Alexis says
I had trouble getting into her holiday ones too…I like her older books better for sure! All of those books sound super fun and right up my alley! You will have to let me know what your favorite ones are!
Lauren @ Oh Hey! I Like That! says
I’ve been wanting to read “Devil in the White City”–thank you for the reminder!! 🙂
Alexis says
You will love it!
Christine says
I have been meaning to read The Devil in the White City! Now you have me convinced that I need to get it.
Alexis says
I really enjoyed it! You will have to check it out!
Kari says
I love the whole scene of reading under a cozy blanket by a window overlooking a wintery scene. Unfortunately, my Netflix binge takes over and the books go right out that wintery scene window! Ha! Looking to change that this year!
Alexis says
OMG, I am the same way sometimes! I have really been working on that the past year!
Olya @ The Siberian American says
I have The Dressmaker sitting on my Kindle ready to read, so it sounds like I should read it soon! I agree with The Devil in the White City and all of Erik Larson’s books (I loved In the Garden of Beasts too!). Everyone here in Chicago is obsessed with The Devil in the White City!
Alexis says
Oh I bet people in chicago do love that book! So much history in it! I think you will enjoy the dressmaker, it is sad, but also a neat story!
Kathryn says
I’m always on the hunt for good book recommendations. I don’t know your tastes or boundaries, but if you could choose just three of the cleanest ones on your list, what would they be?
Alexis says
These are all very mild books…I don’t like anything too graphic or risque. I will email you! 🙂
Tianna says

This post has such perfect timing – I am getting back into reading and getting ready to launch a bookclub. Devil in the white city is one of my favorite books of all time and we just added the Paris wife to our bookclub list so I am glad to hear its a great one. Now I am intrigued about the dressmaker – I will need to check that one out.
Alexis says
I agree about devil in the white city!! Have you read any other Erik Larson books? Honestly, all of his books are so great to read! The Paris Wife is another one you will enjoy, although really sad at times, it is very interesting and captivating. The Dressmaker is another historical fiction that is very interesting! I hope you enjoy it! Let me know what you think of them 🙂 Have a wonderful Sunday!
Ali says
ADORE Erik Larson – anything he writes, I will read. To the point where I’m a little nervous about the Devil in the White City movie because the book was so, so good and I want the movie to be the same!!
I just finished Molokai’i by Alan Brennert, which was really interesting historical fiction from the perspective of a young girl growing up in a leper colony on a Hawaiian island. Different than what I usually go for, but well-researched and really gripping.
Also, hi! I just found your site and love anyone who gives book recs, because I always need something new to read!
Ali
Alexis says
Me too! He is a fantastic writer and turns history into an awesome read. OMG, I had no idea they were turning it into a movie?!? I am nervous about that too! It is so hard to top an epic book like that. That book sounds really interesting…I am down for any book that is written well and interesting. Plus, it is so fun to learn something new 🙂
I am so happy to get antiquated with you and I’m so glad you stopped over! I love reading and sharing my book list. Reading is my go to stress reliever and boredom breaker, so I love it! Hope to see more of you around, have a wonderful Sunday!!!

I just joined a book club and my fellow members talked highly of The Paris Wife which they read a few months ago. I’ve read The Devil in the White City which is also very good.

The Devil in The White City was fantastic! I really enjoyed the Paris Wife, it was such an interesting depiction of life back then. I love books that are based on real people 🙂
