One of our main projects since moving in our home, was to create a back yard that was fun, inviting, and relaxing in all seasons. I get questions on instagram all the time about things I like for our outdoor area!

Even before we owned a home, our apartment balcony was a little paradise. I had dozens of plants, lights, furniture, bird feeders, and anything that would make sitting out there a fun experience. These are elements that everyone needs in their yard, no matter what size!

These backyard must haves are really simple and easy for any size yard or patio!

Cheap Backyard Must Haves For Small Yards or Patios

1. Storage!

This Mocha Resin Wicker Storage Seat is the best thing I have purchased for my patio. I was surprised how incredibly sturdy it was too. Very affordable and can be added to almost any area. It is small enough to put on a balcony too.

Amazon also has this one which is very affordable!

2. Lighting!

I think lighting is one of the easiest ways to create an inviting space in your yard or patio! You can have a tiny space, but with some lighting added to it, you can jazz up even the smallest balcony!

These Solar Powered LED String Lights are perfect for any outdoor area! They soak up the sun all day, then put off pretty light at night.

61SEnuHU-rL._SL1000_I also love having candle lights out on the tables or fences. These submersible candle lightsare really neat to add to your patio or yard. They are submersible too, so you can even put them in a pond, pool, or bird bath 🙂

These Real Wax Battery Operated Flameless Candles are another fun way to add a lighting element. The fun thing is these can also be used inside during the fall!

3. Bird Feeder!

No Matter what size yard you have or even if you just have a patio, you definitely need a bird feeder. I have always had a feeder, even when I lived in apartments. Birds are the perfect natural element in your yard. They are always so pretty to watch in the morning sunrise too. I took Ornithology in college, and I thought it was one of the best classes! We bird watched once a week at sunrise, and I was blown away by how many species we actually had in our area. Amazon has some really neat looking bird feeders!

4. Hummingbird Feeder!

Same thing, no matter what size yard, or even just a patio, you definitely need a Hummingbird Feeder

5. A really cute garden pot or holder!

Before I had a yard, I loved adding different heights to my patio to give it the illusion of being bigger. I still do the same thing to my back yard. I love adding something for depth, like this Two Tiered Garden Cart .

If you don’t have space to go out, you can always go up! I love all the neat options available now. The pink stand in the pictures above I bought from Lowe’s.

Those are my top five backyard must haves! I enjoy them during every season too.

I use all these elements under our pergola area too!

Love all of these items… my favorite are the solar powered lights… Do you have wild creatures in your yard – I have either possoms or raccoons… someone is hollowing out oranges and leaving me the rinds… the gardener’s tips – ha ha

    Have a wonderful day!

Solar powered lights are such a great idea! I love how easy it is to light up your yard without even thinking about it. We do get racoons often, but they mainly dig through the trash if we have any sitting out! I have more of an issue with GRASSHOPPERS eating everything. They get so bad during this heat! Such a nuisance! Hope you have a great day Laurie!

Great list! We are currently in transition (waiting to build a new house) and I find myself missing my old back yard and screen porch.
I am co-hosting the #HomeMattersParty Link party this month and would love to have you visit. The next party starts tonight at midnight!

Woohoo! I have all of those! I even have one of the battery lit candles like yours. Aren’t they great! My grandsons loved having them under their blanket fort when they would spend the night. 🙂

Bird feeder! Never would’ve thought of it myself to be honest 😉 It’s so easy to overdo a small yard, but some details are a must in my book.
