Cool Baking Soda Hacks To Use Around The House
Why is Baking Soda So Useful?
Before we start, you might be wondering why baking soda is so useful. We did a really in-depth post about washing soda vs baking soda. You can read more about that here.
Here are some important things to mention about baking soda’s chemical properties.
- Slightly alkaline with pH around 8
- Antimicrobial
- pH buffer
- Pest deterrent
- Deodorizing
It also has whitening power and enhances things like hydrogen peroxide. Below are all the ways I have personally used baking soda around my home for years!
1. Remove stains from wooden bowls or wooden utensils with a baking soda solution.
Wooden bowls or utensils do great with baking soda! Sprinkle some around the surface, then scrub with a wet sponge. Let it sit a few minutes, then rinse with hot water. This also helps with odors that linger on wooden surfaces.
2. Clean wood cutting boards with baking soda.
Just like with the wooden bowls or utensils, baking soda is awesome for wood cutting boards. Just sprinkle baking soda on the board and scrub with a wet sponge. Rinse in warm water.
3. Scrub plastic storage containers with lemon juice and baking soda paste.
Make a paste with baking soda and lemon juice to remove stains on plastic containers. Add a few tablespoons of baking soda to a bowl, add a few drops of lemon juice until texture is like a paste. Apply with a sponge and scrub. Rinse with warm water.
4. Pour baking soda in the kitchen sink.
I love to pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda in the kitchen sink, then follow with hot water and turn the garbage disposal on. This helps deodorize the sink and clean out gunk. I do this every few weeks along with using our homemade kitchen sink scrub.
5. Break up dried or stuck on food from pans.
You can loosen up baked or stuck on food from pans by boiling water and baking soda until the food starts to break up. Let it cool, then wipe out. I usually do a few cups of water and a few tablespoons of baking soda for this.
6. Clean stained coffee cups or tea cups.
Sprinkle baking soda with a little salt onto a damp sponge and scrub stains on coffee cups or tea cups.
7. Clean the oven door.
I shared this method in our eBook on page 15. Sprinkle baking soda on the oven door, then spray a little peroxide on it to form a paste. Rub in a circular motion with your finger or a sponge. This removes grease stains really well!
8. Remove crayon from walls.
This is another tips I have used! Just sprinkle some baking soda on a damp sponge and rub the crayon in a circular motion.
9. Clean your carpets.
One of the most popular recipes on Chemistry Cachet is this homemade carpet cleaner. Get the full recipe in the blog post, but all you need is baking soda and vinegar for this! They are applied in separate steps and work to break up stains and dirt.
10. Freshen carpets.

11. Use it in the toilet.
Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda in the toilet, let it sit 30 minutes, then scrub. Follow up with our DIY toilet cleaner for a really fresh toilet!
12. Clean grout.
Another really popular recipe on Chemistry Cachet is this DIY grout cleaner. Head to the blog post to get the details on this one! It is so easy to make and will whiten and clean grout really well.
13. Deodorize towels.
Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your washing machine when you wash towels. Not only will this enhance the detergent, but it also helps deodorize musty or dirty towels. I do this all the time! If you have the option, wait until the rinse cycle to add the baking soda to get the best benefit. I don’t have this option on my machine, so I just add it in the beginning of the load, and it still works good.
14. Clean brushes.
Fill the bathroom sink with warm water and about a few tablespoons of baking soda and a few tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. Soak hair brushes in the link for 15-20 minutes. You can scrub the brushes if necessary or just rinse with warm water. This helps remove product build up or just clean the brushes. I do this for mine every few months!
15. Clean concrete.
Everyone loves our DIY concrete patio cleaner recipe because it works so well! It uses baking soda, peroxide, and dish soap to help clean your patio surface. Get the full recipe in the blog post.

Other Things To Remember About Baking Soda
Baking soda is definitely a useful tool around your house, but there are certain things it doesn’t work on. Don’t mix baking soda with vinegar inside a container. It will react, than neutralize into a salt leaving you with a pointless solution. You might see this online often, but it isn’t good to do. You can read more about baking soda and vinegar in this post!
FYI, Baking soda can leave a residue on surfaces that is temporary! Simply rinse any residue left behind. It will not be permanent if you see a little white substance left on something.
Baking soda enhances things in the washing machine like we mentioned in tip #13, but it doesn’t wash by itself. It works best to enhance regular detergent since the hot water will dissolve it fairly quick (unless you have the option to add into a rinse cycle). Baking soda will also dissolve in a dishwasher, so anything you read online saying to use it as dish washing powder, it won’t work like that.
Homemade solutions, like baking soda, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide, are wonderful options for your house. But they have limited uses when it comes to appliances since they aren’t formulated to withstand high temperatures or work at certain times like store-bought products are! It is important to remember these things when you use a homemade cleaning hack so you can know what it will do 🙂
