Today, we are sharing with you some of the best Christmas movies of all time!
This post was written way back in 2015, but we have recently updated it with more fun movies to share with you.
Movies have always been an important part of my life. There are certain movies that signify different stages in my life, and I will always remember my childhood being full of movie watching.
Although I adore movies in general, there is something so special about Christmas movies, right? Many of my favorites I have been watching since I can remember, yet they are still special each year. Maybe it’s the nostalgia for Christmas magic or the memories of Christmas past, either way, I love them all.
Luckily, my husband is also a Christmas fanatic and movie lover, so we have large collection of Christmas movies that we have to watch every single year. In fact, one of the first purchases we made our first Christmas as a married couple in 2007 was buying as many Christmas movies as we could 😉
There are hundreds, if not thousands of movies made about Christmas, but these are my ultimate favorites that have a special meaning to me.
The Best Christmas Movies of All Time
A few of these Christmas movies are old, so you might not have heard of them before!

Christmas Vacation
This movie has been one of my favorites since high school! My family and friends joke that I am completely like Clark Griswold, but even more so when it comes to Christmas. I am completely fanatical and traditional for Christmas celebrations, and my number one fanatical moment is my tree. I am very particular about my tree, how it is decorated, the lighting, the tree skirt, and I don’t like it to be messed with. So, this movie has always been special to me for that reason. Plus, it is funny!!
Home Alone 1 & 2
These movies came out when I was really young, so everyone was always talking about them! The 90s were the best anyways, and these movies just encompass my childhood Christmases. They have great Christmas music, Christmas scenes, and they are funny too!
A Christmas Story
Although this is an 80s movie, it is set in my favorite time period, the 40s. I love everything about this time period! Christmas was so sweet, simple, and special in the 40s and 50s, so I love this. We have a post all about old-fashioned Christmas traditions you don’t want to miss if you love this time period too!
Christmas in Connecticut
Another ode to that era, Christmas in Connecticut is definitely one of my top favorites. Barabara Stanywck is one of my favorite actresses, and she is wonderful in this. This movie is so sweet, I love watching it many times during December. If you don’t have it, I would buy Christmas in Connecticut !
Surviving Christmas
I love Ben Affleck, and he is funny in this! This movie is one of my families favorites and it makes us laugh so hard every year.
Elf
I remember seeing this in the theater when I was in high school. Some friends and I went together, and we loved it immediately!
Four Christmases
This is newer to the list for us, but I love it! I actually didn’t like it too much the first time I saw it. I didn’t really get it. After renting it the next year, I fell in love with the humor. Mainly because it reminded me of some of my family experiences. And I love the actors!
A Holiday Affair
Another 40s movies that is so heart warming! This movie always makes me cry because it is so sweet.
It Happened on 5th Avenue
More 40s era, and this one is just as sweet. I actually have the 4 Film Favorites: Classic Holiday Collection which has this one and A Holiday Affair!
Prancer
This was my all time favorite movie as a little girl. She reminded me of myself. Each time I watch this movie, I cry!
It’s A Wonderful Life
James Stewart is one of my favorite actors, so I have always enjoyed this movie. It is truly a special Christmas classic that we watch every year.
The Grinch
Both the animated and the Ron Howard version. I saw the Ron Howard version in theaters, and it was so neat on the big spring! We love watching these movies each year.
The Santa Claus
This was another one of my all time favorites as a child. It really embraced the magic of Santa for me, and every time I watch it, I remember that wonderful, giddy feeling I would get each year thinking of Santa coming and all the magic surrounding him.
Recipe for a Perfect Christmas
I saw this lifetime movie in high school one night when I was watching TV. I normally don’t watch TV movies like this, but I got so caught up in it, it became a favorite of mine that I tried to watch each year. I found it on DVD a few years ago in a double pack!
The Polar Express
I didn’t actually see this until my husband and I were married. I didn’t have any desire to see it since I thought it was just for kids, but my husband knew I would adore it, so he bought it for me one year. I completely fell in love with it because it really represents how I feel about Christmas.
I started a tradition about 5 years ago with this movie. My husband always worked nights and holidays, so he always worked Christmas Eve. Since Christmas morning we go to my parents, we started doing our little Christmas on the night before when he got home. I would wait up for him on the couch, watching this movie and drinking hot chocolate. I would get his stocking filled too. He would get in at about midnight and we would have Christmas. He still works nights and sometimes Christmas Eve, so this is still a tradition we keep.
Earnest Saves Christmas
This has been a favorite Christmas movie of mine since I was young. My little brother (7 years younger) and I would watch this every Christmas while coloring in our Christmas coloring books and eating that popcorn out of a tin. You know, the one with the three flavors, butter, cheddar and caramel. We did this every single year until I moved out! He and I both love this movie!
Christmas with the Kranks
I took my brother to see this in theaters when it came out! I was in high school, and he was young, so I knew it would be fun for us. I think it is a fun, sweet movie that is great for the family. I will admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of this when I first saw it. It took awhile for me to appreciate it, but now it is one of our favorites.
The Christmas Chronicles
This is a Netflix original that came out last year. I didn’t plan on watching it because I am not usually a fan of Netflix Originals, but I heard so many good things about this. I loved it! It was enchanting and fun.
A Christmas Carol
There are many version of this classic movie. My favorite one is a Muppet Christmas Carol which Amelia enjoys too! I also love the Disney version that came out a few years ago.
Miracle on 34th Street
I didn’t grow up watching this movie, but I have recently started to enjoy it. I love the original version the best! I think this really encompasses Christmas in the 1940s too.
I have had people ask me why White Christmas isn’t on my list? Well, I do like this movie, but it has never been a big Christmas favorite for us! I didn’t see it until I was older, but I love the music in it.
So what are your favorite holiday movies? Do you have any fun traditions with them?

Home Alone 2 is one of the very best! Doesn’t it make you want to spend a snowy day in NYC?
Alexis says
It totally does! I have never been to NYC at Christmas, but I can only imagine!

If you can believe it, I’ve never seen It’s A Wonderful Life! I’m hoping that we’ll be able to watch a ton of Christmas movies over the next week and I’ll finally be able to watch it. I’ve also heard that White Christmas is a great Christmas movie too, and it seems like it’d be during a timer period that you’d love! And Elf, who doesn’t love Elf!
Alexis says
Oh it is such a charming movie. I cry every time, but then feel super happy after too 🙂 Oddly enough, I am not a huge White Christmas fan. I feel like it isn’t Christmasy enough until the end. It is fun to watch though! Elf is the best!!!

We’ve been so lucky to see a ton of Christmas movies on TV lately and it’s been awesome. As an adult I was delighted by movies (that I had never seen) like Polar Express and The Elf on a Shelf movie. My 10 and 13 year-old dug out some old Winnie the Pooh Christmas movies and that was a ton of fun too. One that I would add to your list is Elmo in Grouchland. LOVE that movie! Stopping by from the SITS Sharefest!
Alexis says
I have enjoyed some movies more as an adult than when I was a kid. They are always so much fun! Thanks for the recommendations 🙂 Merry Christmas!

I’ve been watching The Santa Clause every year for Christmas for as long as I can remember. My mom was always a huge fan of Tim Allen and made it a yearly ritual. Since I got older, I bought my own copy to watch. Now, my husband and I watch it together every year. This year we’re going to start a new tradition of watching it on Christmas Eve. 🙂 For me, it isn’t Christmas without that movie.
Alexis says
Oh yeah that one is truly a classic! I remember when it came out and it has always been so special to us 🙂 That’s a fun tradition!

Love so many of these, and there are a few I haven’t seen! I love your tradition with your brother, so sweet. I tried showing an Ernest movie to my stepkids and they were like “what is this crap?” 😉
Alexis says
Lol that is too funny they thought that about Earnest! Younger kids just don’t get it 🙂

So funny, I totally meant to do a similar post with my favorite holiday flicks lol. One that I always loved was Scrooged with Bill Murray! But I’m glad you put my favorite on your list- It’s a Wonderful Life. That movie makes me cry every time. I found you through the Meetup Monday link party!
Alexis says
Oh yes, Bill Murray is always the best! I cry so hard watching It’s A Wonderful Life! But it is such a good cry 🙂

OMG! You don’t have White Christmas?! Another good one is Enid. It’s an updated version of A Christmas Carol with Susan Lucci. If you’ve never seen them you’ll love them both… I promise. Merry Christmas to you and yours the holiday season!
Alexis says
White Christmas is definitely a classic. I never liked it as a kid, but have enjoyed more as an adult! I’ll have to check out that other one! Have a wonderful Christmas!
Arlene says
Wish auto correct would leave me alone! That name of the movie is “Ebie” with Susan Lucci!
Alexis says
Haha auto correct always gets confused 🙂
