After we share this recipe, you can read below it to learn how this works as an all-purpose cleaner.
Ingredients Needed for DIY All-Purpose Cleaner:
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol (just basic 70% is fine)
- 1 tablespoon dish soap (try autumn scented if you find one)
- 30 drops pumpkin pie essential oil blend
- Spray bottle (glass is best for essential oils)
Directions:
- Add about 2 cups of water to a spray bottle (The spray bottle I used holds 14 oz of water, so anything around 2 cup is good).
- With a funnel, add in rubbing alcohol, dish soap, and essential oil.
- Give a gentle shake before each spray.
This follows the same formulation as our famous DIY all-purpose cleaner from the eBook:
After our eBook was published in 2016, readers have come to use time and again saying the all-purpose cleaner on page 13 of the eBook is the best cleaner they have used! Everyone in my family uses it for everything, it is just the best homemade cleaner because it has the best ratios for all-purpose use.
This recipe inspired our autumn all-purpose cleaner today. This particular recipe won’t be as potent without the lemon infused rubbing alcohol addition, but it is still absolutely wonderful to use for the fall and Christmas season. It smells AMAZING!
How Long Will This DIY All-Purpose Cleaner Last?
Readers always ask this question about our homemade cleaners, so I wanted to include this. Since this is alcohol based, it will be good for months. We create homemade cleaners in a small ratio, so they should be used up in the right amount of time.
The Science Behind How This DIY All-Purpose Cleaner Works:
Each Ingredient in this recipe has a specific purpose. The pumpkin pie essential oil is just for scent though. The other ingredients are for the cleaning aspect.
Rubbing Alcohol
This is one of the best all-purpose cleaning ingredients because it is safe for all types of surfaces. I love adding this to a homemade cleaner, and readers have said it is their favorite too. Remember, cleaning and disinfecting are different. If you are making homemade cleaners, please remember they are for cleaning. To disinfect, you always need to use the full strength of a household item like rubbing alcohol or peroxide. Read our post about cleaning vs disinfecting so you can learn more about these steps.
Isopropyl alcohol works well when it is mixed with water and dish soap to clean grim, dirt, soap scum, food messes or more! You can use it in the bathroom, kitchen, living room, or anywhere else in your house. Since the alcohol is diluted to the right ratio, you can even use it on wood, trim, and walls.
Dish Soap
Dish soap is always the best household surfactant for DIY cleaners. After all the years of testing I have done, this ratio of dish soap is the best for cleaning. It is just enough to have scrubbing power, but not too much to leave any film or suds. As you know, Dawn is typically my dishwashing liquid of choice because it performs the best out of all the brands I have used including things like Castile soap. For this recipe, I went with an autumn themed dish soap to make this mixture even more fall scented! You can use any dish soap you like for this recipe, but results will vary depending on the concentration.
Pumpkin Pie Essential Oil Blend
I have purchased many different types of pumpkin or pumpkin pie blends over the years, but I think this one had the best scent! And it really smelled like a pumpkin pie! I use this brand for my wool dryer balls, and it is good quality with wonderful scents! The essential oil for this recipe is just for an autumn smell 🙂
Water
Water is actually an important ingredient. If you look at the back of any store-bought cleaner, you will see water listed as one of the main ingredients. Water has a naturally high surface tension. This is why when you wipe off a counter with just water, it will remove debris. It doesn’t remove it all, but it dissolves dirt or certain food particles. Water is also a universal solvent, so it mixes well with the other ingredients. It is a key part of this solution!
Does DIY All-Purpose Cleaner Disinfect?
No, homemade cleaners don’t usually disinfect. You must disinfect in a separate step. Even store-bought cleaners are the same! Read this post now to learn important information on disinfecting surfaces vs cleaning surfaces!
To disinfect, you will need to use pure rubbing alcohol. I recommend cleaning with this DIY cleaner, and if you need to disinfect a particular surface, follow up with a spray bottle of pure rubbing alcohol. Again, please read this post to learn more about this. Many miss this step, so educating yourself on how homemade cleaners work is important!

you do such a great job……………….my son & family live in the country by a neighbor who has some sheep & goats………….they can hardly be outside because of flys…………I want to know how do you eliminate flys?
Alexis says
Flies are hard because if you don’t eliminate the source, they won’t really go away. There are things you can do to deter them from the particular area you want to be. Like a porch or patio. Here are some tips on mosquito repelling that also works for flies or gnats.

I would like information on Cleaning Vinegar–there is a huge difference in costs* but formula appears to be the same–6% acidity for Cleaning; 5% for food use. However, the single percentage point makes a difference in cleaning function.
*One product is about $5 per gallon, the other, $22.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi! We have a guide to vinegar you can read about here. We talk about cleaning vinegar vs regular vinegar too. 🙂

I made this cleaner using exactly the same brand of essential Pumpkin Pie oil that you used as I wanted to have the same effect as tested.
You are absolutely right! It cleans beautifully and smells wonderful.
First time I actually ever looked forward to cleaning anything!

That is great to hear Donna! So glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I love how fall-ish and fresh my house smells using this!

Hi Alexis. I made your all purpose cleaner with Dawn and lemon essential oil. My question is, after I spray, do I wipe it down with a dry cloth/paper towel? I feel like if I use dry, I’m leaving a bit of a soapy film on the counter, but if I use a damp cloth, it seems to suds up some and I am rinsing the cloth a couple of times to get the soap out. What is the correct way to wipe up this wonderful cleaner. I just found your site and I’m hooked on reading everything you have to say! I love that you can back up what you say with knowledge and science. ps..I have lemon peels infusing now in alcohol! Can’t wait to use that! Thank you.
Alexis says
Hi Lyann! Thanks for your question. The way this is formulated, it can be used a few different ways. First, you can spray it, then scrub with it. Using a sponge, I like to make it suds a little to get some scrubbing power. Then, I just wipe off the surface with a microfiber cloth. Or you can spray, then wipe off with a microfiber cloth. The neat thing about Dawn’s formula, even if you have some soapy looking residue on a surface, wiping it off with a dry cloth or towel does remove all of it 🙂 I prefer microfiber cloths when it comes to cleaning because they absorb everything, but a regular towel is okay too

I love your website and your children are absolutely adorable.
I have a question concerning old porcelain sinks.
How can I remove the stains naturally.
Help!
Alexis says
Thank you Terrie! Have you tried the Pink Stuff? I have found that to be super powerful for porcelain. A homemade cleaner to try would be this peroxide/baking soda mix.The homemade version is not as abrasive, so I have found the Pink Stuff to be contain the right amount of abrasives to really clean stains on porcelain!
Terrie Prosper says
Alexis,
Thank you for your response and no, I have not tried that product but I will give it a try and let you know how it works out.
Sincerely,
Terrie
