There are two smells on this earth that always bring comfort to my soul. Chocolate and coffee. All my readers definitely know by now that I am obsessed with both equally and I love everything about each substance!
These two chemicals are deliciously perfect on their own and have numerous health benefits, but the benefits aren’t just internal, but topical too. Just another reason to adore chocolate and coffee, right? 🙂
For more details on how chocolate is awesome for your health, definitely check out this post.
For this chocolate coffee sugar scrub, I decided this combination would be the perfect winter treat for your skin and would make a wonderful gift for my friends!
Coffee is so good for the skin! Possible benefits include:
- reducing appearance of cellulite
- reducing inflammation (puffiness)
- minimize redness of skin
We can thank the amazing chemical, caffeine for all these benefits! And bonus, chocolate also contains caffeine which doubles the soothing effects of this scrub.
This exfoliating scrub also is infused with oils, so it will leaves your skin feeling SO soft after use. I experimented with this recipe years ago when I was working on my chocolate research because I wanted to see if caffeine really made a difference on my skin.
Since I have constant inflammation and redness due to Rheumatoid Arthritis, I am always on the lookout for things that can sooth or help any symptoms. It is amazing how a hot soothing bath with a fragrant, caffeine based scrub can invigorate you!
Anyways, I was pleased with the benefits of caffeine on my skin and I try to use scrubs like this weekly. I love this one more than any I have made because it smells so heavenly. Have you ever seen the ingredient list for store bought versions? Totally full of chemicals that will dry out your skin, so I stick to making it myself.
Here is how you can make your own chocolate coffee sugar scrub and give as gifts too!
Ingredients:
- 1/8 cup liquid coffee
- 1 heaping tbsp coffee grounds (fresh)
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup raw coconut sugar**
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil (softened or melted)
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp unsweetened regular cocoa powder
Directions:
In a medium bowl, combine coffee GROUNDS, sugar, coconut sugar, salt and cocoa powder until well incorporated. Add in the oils and mix well. Mixture should be pretty dry, but clumping together at this point.
Next slowly add in your liquid coffee until the texture you want is achieved. I like mine very course still, but sticking together. I make some for people who prefer it a little softer. It is definitely up to you 🙂
This is about how it looks in the end.
***Chemist Tips: I like the texture of coconut sugar, but if you don’t have it, just use additional granulated sugar. Since this mixture contains coconut oil, it will be more solid at cooler temps and softer at room temperature. I like to make this ahead of time and store it in the fridge, then I will set it out to room temperature until it is time to use it, or package it up for gifts.
To Use: I like to mix with a little water, then rub all over my skin and rinse. You can rub it on dry, or rub it on wet. It is totally a preference!
For the gifts:
I printed out my logo with a chemist approved stamp, so anyone who receives it knows this is safe and good for you! Feel free to print it out below!
(Just click on label below and save to computer, I add it to a word document and resize how I need it!)
I also use Modge Podge for labels. Paint on some Modge Podge to the lid, then apply the label, smoothing out towards the edges. Always add another coat to the top to make sure it is secure.
I repeat the same step with the label. (Just click on label below and save to computer, I add it to a word document and resize how I need it!)
I just wrap it up in a pretty bow once the labels are finished, and that’s it!

I like to make sugar scrub as gifts, but I’ve never seen one quite like this. I love the different ingredients you use and think it’ll make for a great sugar scrub. Next time I need a batch, I’m going to give this recipe a try.

It is definitely one of my favorites, it is so invigorating, but leaves your skin so soft afterwards! I think you will enjoy it 🙂

This is such a fun, different gift idea! Usually the ingredients in scrubs are always the same, but this adds a fun new spin to it.
Have you ever tried the Frank scrub?

Thanks for this awesome post and recipe! I’ve made coffee body scrub before and I love it, but I NEVER thought of putting cocoa in it–that sounds absolutely heavenly! How long do you think this would last in the fridge? I once made a scrub and eventually it went bad, but that could’ve been since I stored it at room temperature.
Alexis says
I have kept this stuff at room temperature for a few weeks, then I put it in the fridge for months really. The biggest thing for me since it is usually warm here, is the coconut oil can make the mixture to soft if left out for awhile. During winter, it seems to last forever though 🙂 The cocoa powder inside is so great!

It sounds heavenly, but I’m concerned that it would clog the plumbing. Should I be concerned?
Alexis says
I have used this for 10 years without any issues. This doesn’t put much down the plumbing. You can always apply It dry and wipe off with a damp paper towel that you can throw away. I do that with some of my heavier oil treatments
Diane says
Thanks for that information. I’m anxioys to try it!
