Today we are sharing a really easy, wonderful smelling DIY citrus room spray you can use all spring and summer!
It has such a fresh and pleasant smell, so I love using this all over the house.
Lemon and orange remind me of a fresh, spring day full of sunshine, so I think this DIY room spray is perfect for this time of year!
Homemade air fresheners and room sprays are really great for small spaces like bathrooms or laundry rooms. I spray this in the trashcan before putting a new liner in too!
DIY Citrus Room Spray
Ingredients:
- 2 cups witch hazel** ( I use this one)
- 2 lemons peeled
- 2 oranges peeled
- 25 drops orange oil (I use this one)
- 25 drops lemon oil (I use this one)
- 1/2 cup water
- Glass jar with lid
- Glass spray bottle (These are my favorite)
Directions:
- First, add the lemon and orange peels along with witch hazel to a jar. Allow to infuse for 2 weeks.
- After the two weeks, strain the peels and add the witch hazel mix to a glass jar.
- Add in water, lemon oil, and orange oil (increase amount to desired scent).
- Shake gently before each spray.
**Witch hazel substitutes: You can sub in vodka for this if you prefer it or have it on hand. Read more about using vodka in room spray here.
Why Even Use Peels If The Essential Oil Is Added?
There are several reasons to use the peels in this citrus spray. The first reason is I always have leftover peels from lemons and oranges. We eat oranges all the time, so I have orange peels sitting around or being thrown away. I also use lemon juice in my tea and for cooking, so we have extra lemon peels sitting around.
Second, infusing reel lemon peels into witch hazel produces a very unique scent. It cuts out the witch hazel scent completely and leaves this very sweet slight citrus aroma. The essential oils do a better job of lingering in the air when you spray, but the peels have that special fresh scent.
If you don’t want to use reel citrus peels, then just use the essential oils. But I think it is worth it to add the peels 🙂
How To Use DIY Citrus Room Spray:
Homemade room sprays are great to spray in small areas like bathrooms, toilets, sinks, trash cans, drawers, closets, or anything like that. Remember that a DIY version won’t necessarily neutralize bad odor molecules (more in-depth information on that here), but it will permeate the air creating a lasting fresh scent. This is why I really love using it in small spaces! Be sure to follow us on Instagram for videos using and making our solutions.
How Long Does This Solution Last?
This is always a common question for any homemade solution we post. A general rule of thumb for DIY cleaners is 2-3 weeks of freshness. For this room spray, it will actually stay fresh for months. The witch hazel and oils won’t loose scent quickly. I would make sure to use this within 3 months though. To test if this room spray is still good, just give it a quick smell 🙂
Why is witch hazel used in this DIY room spray?
All of our previous room sprays use vodka as a base. Vodka is more mild in scent than rubbing alcohol, but it also evaporates quicker than just using all water. Witch hazel is another option. We wanted to share something that was easier to get and less expensive, so witch hazel is a great option. It is also part alcohol, so it allows for easy evaporation too. It is mild in scent, so after adding in your oils and infusing with rinds, it has a very pleasant odor. It also stays in the air for awhile. The witch hazel I use is 14% alcohol, which most of the ones you buy will be this percentage too. Just don’t use anything that says “alcohol-free” witch hazel.
Can I still use vodka in place of witch hazel?
Yes you can! In fact, this is why we share recipes like this to give you options! Options for the air freshener base can be witch hazel or vodka, you can even use rubbing alcohol just keep in mind it is more pungent in scent so you won’t smell the oils as much. To get an alcohol based DIY room spray recipe, check out our rose and orange spray or floral spray.
Will any witch hazel work?
For this recipe, you want to find a witch hazel that has been distilled in alcohol. The alcohol percentage is what makes this a room spray. Alcohol evaporates well. Oddly enough, when it comes to using witch hazel on the face, you DO want to use one that is alcohol-free like Thayers. But for cleaning or room sprays, you want the regular alcohol containing witch hazel. The purpose of alcohol is to help with evaporation and not get everything wet when you spray it.
What Types Of Essential Oils Are Best For Room Sprays?
Anything you have on hand will work in this solution, but don’t use anything expensive! This is a room spray, so the essential oils will be for scent, so cheaper is good. I have been using Gya Labs brand in all of my cleaning solutions because they are very affordable on Amazon, but also smell wonderful. I buy the lemon oil here and the orange oil here.
I also use the same essential oils for our homemade Lysol spray recipe!
I hope you enjoy making this amazing, incredible smelling citrus room spray recipe all spring and summer!

What is the need for the essential oils, when you are distilling the oils from the citrus peels?
Mike g says
I should have said, “doing a solvent extraction”, rather than “distilling” above…

Purely for scent 🙂 when you make solution, you will see the witch hazel solution has a wonderful scent, but like all homemade room sprays, it needs essential oils for lingering scent in the air.

I can already imagine the scent of oranges and lemons! Always a great scent – perks you up! Thank you for this “recipe” and all the chemical background info. I haven’t used witch hazel in a long time… it’s not often mentioned “these days”.

I had a bottle of witch hazel sitting around forever, and I thought Hey! I need to make something fun with this. It is a great way to use it in this room spray 🙂 They are really such a great scent to boost your mood!

The orange oil you recommend is not available on Amazon. Have you ever made your own orange oil? I was just reading about this.
Alexis says
Hi! Yes, the orange oil is on Amazon. Just click the link in the ingredient list that says “I use this one” and it will lead you to it. Making your own essential oil is a little difficult and requires the right equipment, but we do have a DIY lemon oil in the eBook which uses a ceramic crock pot

Hi! This is a screenshot of what I see when I click the orange essential oil link we have. If you have amazon prime, this is what you should see too. I am not sure why it is telling you it isn’t available. Are you in the United states?
