Today, I am going to share with you a popular recipe from the ebook, the DIY quick daily bathtub cleaner.
You have probably seen many homemade bathtub cleaners out there, and they all seem to have similar ingredients.
So, what makes this one the best?
It is ALL about the ratios! This is what I do as a chemist, I test ratios of homemade cleaners to see what performs the best.
You can have 20 different recipes with the same ingredients, but depending on the ratios, some of them don’t work at all.
This is an Ebook recipe that I wanted to share with you in a blog post so we could elaborate on it.

Ingredients Needed For This DIY Quick Daily Bathtub Cleaner
- 2 cups white distilled vinegar
- 1/4 cup blue Dawn
- Spray bottle (glass or plastic bottle is fine)
- Funnel
- Microfiber cloth, sponge, or scrub brush
Directions For Mixing:
- In a bowl, combine the vinegar and Dawn, stir until combined, then add to a spray bottle for application.
- Alternatively, you can just mix it together in the spray bottle as shown in the photos. Either way is fine, just make sure you shake the bottle if you mix it directly into spray bottle.
How To Use This:
Remember, always test a small surface first when you use a homemade cleaner for the first time.
- After using the bathtub (or shower) while everything is still warmed up and damp, spray this solution over the entire surface.
- Allow this solution to sit for at least a few minutes or up to 30 minutes for heavier soap scum.
- With a scrub brush, sponge, or microfiber cloth scrub the surface in a circular motion. I like to use my electric scrub brush for this and it is awesome!
- Rinse off any suds (there won’t be suds if you use a microfiber cloth, but still a good idea to rinse).
How Often Should You Use This DIY Quick Daily Bathtub Cleaner?
As the title mentions, this is great for daily use. But you can also use it every few days, once a week, or as needed. But it does work best when you use it daily and keeps you from having to scrub as much.
When you mix Dawn dish soap and vinegar, you create a surprisingly effective cleaning solution!
- Dawn: Known for its grease-cutting abilities, it helps to break down dirt and soap scum.
- Vinegar: An acidic cleaner, it cuts through mineral deposits and hard water stains while also breaking up soap scum on bathtub surfaces.
Together, they form a powerful duo that can tackle a variety of cleaning tasks, from removing soap scum to cleaning kitchen appliances.
Below you can see the soap scum it removed from the bathtub!
Do I Have To Use Dawn Dish Soap For This Recipe?
I always get this question when I share a DIY cleaning recipe, so I wanted to go into a little detail in our post today. Since 2010, I have been creating DIY cleaners. So, for 14 years I have tried and tested out many different recipes, ratios, products, and mixes. My mom always used Dawn growing up, so I used Dawn for all my recipes in the beginning of creating homemade cleaners. I tried many other dish soaps over the years, but Dawn continues to be the formula that cleans the best. It also mixes better with other ingredients compared to others I have tried.
Sometimes a reader will email or send in a comment that a DIY cleaner didn’t work as well for them using another type of dish soap. They give in and use the Dawn, and they are so surprised how much better it works.
So, if you are looking for the best results, I continue to recommend Dawn in your DIY cleaners. I don’t actually use it on my dishes, it is just for DIY cleaners and DIY home recipes (like our ant spray or weed killer).
Important Information on Combining Vinegar and Dawn Together for a DIY Quick Daily Bathtub Cleaner:
- Neutralization: While vinegar is acidic and Dawn is alkaline, they don’t completely neutralize each other. They still retain their cleaning properties when they are added together in the right proportions.
- Effectiveness: The combination is often used for cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, and other surfaces.
- Ratio: When you use this ratio of vinegar and Dawn, you get a very powerful mixture.
- Additional Tips: For an even stronger solution, you can heat the vinegar before mixing.
Popular uses for this mixture include:
- Cleaning tubs and showers
- Cleaning ceramic surfaces like toilets
- Faucet cleaning (like picture above)
- Bathroom sinks
- Cleaning kitchen surfaces like sinks, ovens or dirty class stove tops.
What NOT To Use This Dawn and Vinegar Solution On:
Remember, do not use vinegar based cleaners on surfaces like natural stone (marble, quartz, stone tiles) or on grout. You can use our homemade all-purpose cleaner on page 13 of the eBook for any natural stone surface instead. You can read information on using vinegar properly in this detailed post.

Have you tried this bathtub cleaner with the NEW version of blue Dawn?? Since the scent has recently changed so drastically (which I absolutely abhor and am allergic to, so I will not buy it anymore) I wonder if the actual cleaning formula has also changed. I do have a few bottles left of the ‘old’ blue Dawn, formerly my favorite dish soap, which I’m hoarding :0)
Alexis says
I have used the newest version of Dawn, the formula is the exact same thankfully. I have found it doesn’t have as much of a scent when diluted with other ingredients for homemade cleaners, but that’s too bad you allergic! Have you tried other versions of Dawn?

Looks good, I no longer have a bathtub though.

You can use this on showers and toilets too! 🙂

Can I use the weed spray on my raspberry bushes (loaded with ants) yuck
Always an interesting newsletter – always look forward to first of new month -Thanks for doing it and making life easier – I’m 90 and still doing everything in the yard. Life is too short to give in to aches and pain lol
Regards from Cdn friend

You can try! We’ve had some readers use it on raspberry and blackberry bushes with success but it might take multiple rounds. Wow that’s great you are still doing that at 90! How awesome. My grandma is 94 and she’s just recently had to slow down. She has cows and 30 acres still lol thank you for your comment, have a great evening!

I have a ceramic tile shower with grout. Can I use this spray since it would contact the grout or is there a better formula for ceramic tile and grout?
Alexis says
I recommend this solution for cleaning grout. You can spray this DIY quick daily bath tub cleaner on the ceramic tiles you have now, just don’t let it linger on the grout too long. I use this for my ceramic tiles with grout and it works fine. I just share this warning because some people will try to clean grout with this, and long term acidic use on grout can damage it. So, it is better to use caution.
