Today we are showing you how to make the easiest DIY refrigerator deodorizer based on simple science!

As the new year approaches, start it off right with a clean and wonderful smelling fridge!

The Easiest DIY Refrigerator Deodorizer

Did you know a refrigerator that smells good is also crucial for safety?

It’s true! A clean and odor-free refrigerator is essential for maintaining food safety and freshness.

When food spoils or spills, it releases unpleasant odors that can linger and even transfer to other food items. These odors can also mask the natural aromas of fresh produce, making it difficult to detect spoilage. Regular deodorizing helps prevent the growth of bacteria and mold, which can cause food borne illnesses.

Plus who wants to open up a refrigerator  to get food and smell something gross??

Here is how you can make the easiest homemade refrigerator deodorizer.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 bag of chamomile tea, unused
  • A few drops of lemon essential oil for added freshness
  • Bowl or container safe for cold temperatures

* shop ingredients here.

Directions:

  1. Add baking soda to your container, then cut open the chamomile tea bag.
  2. Sprinkle the entire tea bag on top of the baking soda.
  3. Add in a few drops of lemon essential oil (as much as you like for scent).
  4. Stir it up well.
  5. Place inside your refrigerator on any shelf where it won’t get knocked over!

How Often Do You Replace DIY Refrigerator Deodorizer?

I do it about every 2 weeks! The recommendation for baking soda is usually to replace the container every 2 weeks, so I do the same with this mixture. The addition of chamomile tea does make it last longer when it comes to scent.

Can I Use Lemon Juice?

No, adding in lemon juice will make the baking soda absorb the liquid, turning it into a paste. This also will hinder it from absorbing malodors. You can use lemon peel if you would like, but the lemon essential oil is my favorite way to get both the scent and still allow the baking soda/tea mixture to absorb and eliminate odors.

Combine This With Our Homemade Refrigerator Cleaner For The Best Smelling Fridge!

If you start with a clean fridge, this works even better! Use our popular homemade refrigerator cleaner to clean the entire surface both inside and outside. After your fridge is clean, you can place the bowl of this deodorizer inside to further kill odors.

What Is This Science Behind This DIY Refrigerator Cleaner?

Baking soda is one of my favorite households staples. It has great chemistry making it universal for cleaning, odor elimination, and other household hacks. I use it for everything from stain removal to cleaning grout.

It is also my go to for odors including the inside of a refrigerator.

I highly recommend checking out our in-depth, detailed blog post on baking soda home hacks.

Baking Soda and Dry Camomile Tea: A Powerful Duo

Baking soda is a well-known natural deodorizer that effectively absorbs odors. Its alkaline properties neutralize acidic odors, leaving your fridge smelling fresh. Dry camomile tea adds an extra layer of deodorizing power and a pleasant, calming aroma. Camomile has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, further helping to keep your fridge clean and hygienic.

Lemon Essential Oil

When it comes to the smell of cleanliness, lemon is my favorite. It has the power to neutralize odors and the smell lingers long than other scents I have tried. While this is a totally optional addition to this homemade recipe, I think it will really enhance your results. I buy it on Amazon for less than $10 and it lasts forever. It is listed above in the ingredient list.

I hope this easy homemade fridge deodorizer comes in handy for you! Enjoy making it and using it.

I don’t have smelly refrigerator. I just put in 1 Baking soda that is ment for the refrgerator. and I also, clean out the frigerator once a week. That way I know what I need to use.
