diy snow paint ingredients

We have a neat project to share with you today with theis DIY snow paint that dries so fluffy and fun.

Kids really have a good time with this, but so can adults!

You can come up with any project to use with this DIY snow paint recipe, but we did snowmen.

Here is how you can make it too.

DIY Snow Paint Recipe

Don’t forget, we love to share simple science with you on how these projects work. So scroll down past the recipe to get all the details on how this homemade fluffy snow paint actually works.

Ingredients For The DIY Snow Paint:

  • 2/3 cup white shaving cream (traditional Barbasol works best)
  • 1/3 cup white glue
  • 1/2 tsp flour
  • Small Mixing Bowl
  • Glitter
  • Paint Brushes

Additional Crafting Supplies:

  • Construction Paper
  • Glue Sticks
  • Stickers, buttons, or other craft supplies

To make it easier for you, we made a list on Amazon with all ingredients.

Directions:

  1. To make this simple diy snow paint, add 1/3 cup of white glue to a mixing bowl. Next, add the 1/2 tsp of flour and mix thoroughly.
  2. Add the 2/3 cup of shaving cream to your mixture and stir until everything is combined.
  3. Now you can add in some glitter to the mixture. We used white and pinkish glitter first to make it look like glistening snow. You can also add glitter after you paint.

How To Use This DIY Snow Paint:

  1. Dip your paint brush into the fluffy paint mixture.
  2. Create whatever type of picture you would like (snowman, snowflakes, snow pictures, etc). Make sure to apply in thicker layers to make it look more like snow when it dries.
  3. After you have created the snow picture, you can add things to the top. We made snowmen, so after painting the snow, we added in a hat, buttons, eyes, and arms. Anything being put on top of the snow will stick. If you add anything to the outside of the picture, glue sticks work good.
  4. While the snow is still sticky, you can also add additional glitter to the top like we did.
  5. Allow the picture to dry overnight.

How Long Does This Take To Dry?

If you make your painting thick, it will be dry in 8 hours or overnight. But the ones we did in these photos were dry after about 4 hours. Just make sure you allow enough drying time for your paintings.

Can You Add Food Coloring To The DIY Fluffy Paint?

Yes you can! If you want to change the coloring of this paint, you can add in a small amount of food coloring to change it. Don’t add too much though, or it will change the texture of this mixture.

You can make this very Christmasy by doing red and green food coloring to make Christmas trees. The possibilities are endless with this mixture of shaving cream, glue, and flour.

What About For Larger Batches?

If you want to do this for a larger group, you can double or triple the ingredients. Since no chemical reaction is actually taking place, you can just estimate the ingredients when you increase the batch and it works out good.

How Do These Ingredients Make Fluffy Paint?

When you take shaving cream and glue with a little flour, you make a paint that will dry fluffy similar to cotton.

How is that?

This is actually a very simple physical reaction. While it doesn’t change the chemical makeup of the products, it changes the physical texture. The shaving cream simply changes the glue texture, so it dries fluffier verses slick like it usually does. The small addition of flour dries the texture out further so the DIY snow paint dries with a cotton like texture. In the picture above, these snowmen feel like cotton to the touch after it dries 🙂

Many homemade fluffy paint recipes don’t use any flour, but I have found adding in a small amount really helps this dry better.

Since no chemical reaction is occurring, exact measurements aren’t necessary. As long as you follow this recipe for the most part, you will get perfect results.

We hope you enjoy making this project! Amelia gets excited to work on projects for Chemistry Cachet to share with you.

Let me know if you make it!

I’ve been making snow paint in my preschool classroom for years! It’s such a fun and easy medium for kids to explore! Because I’m hypersensitive to fragrance and Barbisol really sets me off, I order fragrant-free shaving cream thru the Dollar Tree in bulk for my school which works great! Also I’m celiac as are a couple students so we don’t use flour and it still is a great end result! Love your ideas!
