You may have heard of silicone patches, but many are curious do silicone patches really work for wrinkles??

I was curious too, so I decided to research a little chemistry behind it, then try it out! I have shared some information on my instagram stories about these, and everyone has wanted a full review!

My favorite thing about sharing skincare posts with you is getting to share the chemistry behind why it does or doesn’t work! Chemistry is truly the key to everything 🙂

Do Silicone Patches Really Work for Wrinkles?

Is This A Sponsored Post?

Before we begin, let me be clear this post is not sponsored in anyway. This company probably has no idea I exist. I am adding this tidbit into our post because I am a little surprised about some of the comments we receive. I shared this post almost three years ago (2018), and it continues to get a lot of traffic. I wrote this post quickly one day after getting questions about an Instagram story I shared using these eye patches. Readers asked me to share a blog post. So, I did! I buy these from Amazon, so I am sharing my Amazon link with you. Our long time readers know that Chemistry Cachet is a very honest place where we share products that have worked for us. Very little of my content is sponsored. Instead, I try to share things readers want to see or things I truly enjoy.

Okay, let’s chat more about silicone patches now.

A new trend in skincare is using silicone patches on your wrinkles to make them disappear. There are many different brands, but I decided to try and research SiO Beauty patches because they had some science to back it up. You can also get them on Amazon prime which I love! Free two day shipping 🙂

The ingredients of these patches are simply silicon (Si) and oxygen (O) as you can see from the description above. No harsh chemicals are actually on the pads. This might seem a little strange that this combination could erase wrinkles.

These patches are basically a sticky, rubbery texture. You place them in the desired area then allow them to remain in place overnight.

Silicone on the skin creates the perfect environment for moisture. No air can get to the area with the silicone pads, so it draws moisture to the surface of skin and stays there. If you remember this post about hyaluronic acid, I mentioned that it moisturizes so well it plumps skin. This silicone has the same effect. It draws so much moisture to the surface of your skin, it plumps up wrinkles.

It doesn’t just bring moisture to the skin, it also increases blood flow. Increased blood flow is so important for your skin and helps collagen production. Collagen production is the key to combating wrinkles.

So, the chemistry is there. It is a very simple method for fighting wrinkles. By the way, there has been some confusion on Silicon vs silicone. Check out this polymer chemistry description for more details on the science between the two.

But, Does it Really Work?

This was my question too! The science is there, but I always have to test things out to see if they really work before I share it with my readers. I had specific questions from readers about trying these out, so this post today is an overview of how they worked for me!

I started using the forehead, eye, and neck patches from SiO Beauty. They say their patches erase wrinkles overnight! By the way, this is NOT sponsored! Just wanted to share my experience 🙂

Night One:

I applied the patches after I cleansed by face. I woke up the next morning and gently removed them. After taking them off my under eye area, I have to admit I was SHOCKED. My under eye was plumped up and no lines were there. My biggest issue with my eye area is more of a hollow look as I get older. My eyes were so plump!

The neck was the same thing. I side sleep, so I get lines on my neck. They were gone!

My forehead area has a few lines, but I didn’t notice much of a difference on that area.

The plumpness under the eye didn’t last all day. By nighttime, my under eye area wasn’t quite as plump.

After 15 Uses:

All of there patches are good for 15 uses (although you can really stretch this number), so I used them 15 times each. I didn’t use it everyday, but every other day. My eye area is much more plump and youthful looking using these 15 times. In fact, the more I used them, the longer the results lasted each day.

The forehead area didn’t seem to work as well. My theory on this is the skin is much more tough on your forehead versus under your eyes, so it would take more uses to work.

In Conclusion:

  • I think these silicone patches have some great benefits both short term and long term. Short term, you can definitely see results the next morning. Especially the eye area! You can even wear them for a few hours and see results.
  • Long term, they will definitely work to boost collagen. I think this is something you will need to use often to get the best results though.
  • The forehead patches weren’t quit as strong in my opinion, but I think that is due to thicker skin compared to delicate skin around eyes.

It is definitely worth trying if you are interested in really plumping up the skin and getting rid of wrinkles! I definitely recommend the under eye ones! They are amazing for quick and long time results!

Be sure to follow my instagram for more products I share on stories!

Update ONE Year Later

I posted this article exactly one year ago. I continue to get questions about my results, so I wanted to update this blog post for you. I continue to use the under eye Silicone patches at least once per week. If I have photos to take or something important, I always wear them the night before because they plump my eyes so well. This has been so helpful for applying makeup and giving a more youthful glow!

So, this continues to be a product Chemistry Cachet loves for the eyes! I tried using the forehead patches again more frequently. The results aren’t as much, but I have seen improvement trying these again for a few weeks. I have had many readers email me and say they enjoyed using the forehead patches! So, I think it depends on your skin.

What About Other Brands of Silicone Patches on Amazon?

I have tried several brands on Amazon including this one and this one. The only difference I have found is the adhesive. These cheaper brands or off-brands don’t have as strong of an adhesive. The come on while I sleep, and I was only able to get a few uses out of them. I guess that is why I continue to use the brand SiO for this type of product. It is the only one that stayed on my face, but also got many uses out of them. Just my personal experience on this.

Does it Work For Everyone?

My mom used these and liked them, but I bought a few for my friends as gifts. One of my friends didn’t like them at all nor saw any results! So, it seems like everyone is different. Like I mentioned above, they continue to be something I like rotating, but especially for a quick fix. If I have an event or a photo shoot, I like to wear the patches around my eyes because it plumps them so well. I feel like it makes a huge difference for me!

I never heard of silicon patches before. I’m curious how they stick to your body. Is it an adhesive? Does it lose its ability to stick as you use the patches (use #1 vs use #14). Can one have a contact sensitivity to the adhesive? I would think that the pulling on the delicate eye skin may harm it… love to get your input.

They stay pretty adhesive until more than 15 uses. It’s possible to be sensitive to them, but unlikely because there aren’t any chemicals in them. Just the silicon adhesive which is kind of like tape. You pull off gently, so it doesn’t hurt or harm delicate skin. I was surprised how easy they were to pull off 🙂 it’s such a neat product!!

It would be hard to mimic this medical grade type of silicone. In fact, there really isn’t a way to do this without special equipment. There are some other types of DIY patches you can use, but it wouldn’t be from silicone. It is a little pricey 🙁 That is why I wanted to test them out for readers to see if they really did work. The technology is so exact, it does make them more expensive. You can try these frownies which are cheaper. They help with wrinkles, but are made of a different material.

Yes, they can work too. I have tried a few different ones, but have noticed the adhesive isn’t as strong. I wasn’t able to get as many uses out of the patches. Most of the ones developed for scars are meant for a one time use, so just keep that in mind.

I am a retired Occupational Therapist. I have used a silicone scar pad for decades to reduce the development of scar tissue. The brand I used is Cica Care . You can now purchase these from Amazon. The adhesive on them lasts indefinitely!

I actually met some of their company’s reps at Hand Symposiums and none of them knew the chemistry behind why these worked or about the adhesive!
I have purchased them from Amazon and though it is a expensive item, they last forever. The only thing you need to be cautious about is to not pull and stretch them as you remove them. It will cause them to tear. If you just very gently remove it a few millimeters at a time, it comes off painlessly.

Here’s another crazy feature, you wash them daily with just soap and water . Lay them sticky side up to dry and the adhesive works again! You will think you ve washed it off when it’s wet. Put it on the counter to dry and it’s ready to go again and again. I never once had any patient to show an allergic reaction.

This stuff even works on scars that are years old. And , no, I do Not work for ,nor get any kickbacks from this company. I believe it is made in England which may be why it remains so expensive. You should have seen the mark up, my hospitals slapped on this miracle stuff!

Anyway. I love this stuff and still keep some in my bathroom cabinet. Hope it helps!

Also when I ever so so gently peeled them from my under eye area noticed how much they had adhered, I gently peeled and I saw tiny red capillaries that broke under my eyes!!!?I’ll use them on my face but will avoid my under eye area! You can position them how you would like. They can be moved towards the outer portion of the eyes. Even when my eyes are puffy, I see great results using these because they create that healthy climate for moisture and collagen. The patches are wide enough to cover the entire outside area of the eye. Let me know if you have more questions!

The longer you use these, the longer the benefits are. The first several weeks I tried them, the plumpness faded throughout the day. I have been using them for years now, and results last. It is a good idea to always apply a good moisture after wearing the patches. A hyaluronic acid serum is good too

Hi, Thank you for this article. I have a question about the use of silicone patches in treating wrinkles. I have tried these myself and find they do work to smooth fine lines but I wonder about the long term effects of these patches. I have read that in the treatment of scars silicone sheets and gel actually reduces the amount of collagen produced thereby minimising scar tissue formation.

I can see that the application of silicone patches would encourage new collagen to form in healthier, more organised fashion similar to young collagen formation. However much of what we do to prompt our skin to produce new collagen as we get older such as using acids, retinoids, laser etc actually works in an opposite fashion to the silicone patches?

Perhaps using these patches in combination with the above treatments would both prompt new collagen production and the use of the patches would allow for the optimal structure of that new collagen?

I would be interested to hear if you have any thoughts on this and if you feel collagen has been effected as a long term user of these products. In addition do you use these patches along side acids, retinoids etc?

Thanks for replying but I was hoping you could elaborate on how using the silcone patches actually helps with collagen production as medical studies suggest that silicone patch use reduces collagen production?

In this paper (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2918339/) it says “It increases hydration of stratum corneum and thereby facilitates regulation of fibroblast production and reduction in collagen production. It results into softer and flatter scar. It allows skin to “breathe”.”

I use these patches myself and they have helped remove my fine lines and wrinkles like nothing else so I know they work but I guess I am just worried about long term use of something that may be inhibiting collagen production? I will perhaps write to Sio and ask them about this!

I read the research article. This particular article is about the silicone gel. I also studied their conclusions which state it is an acceptable and good treatment for scaring. From my understanding, the silicone treatments for scaring do work a little differently in substance application. The patches used for wrinkles don’t dry, but instead allow the moisture to remain on the skin surface. I looked up more articles on long term use, but there isn’t any proven evidence it would reduce collagen overtime. In fact, with the moisture environment it creates, I don’t think it could. The silicone gels they talk about do dry on the skin which might be why it could result differently. You might reach out to this brand to see if they have any long term studies to share! I wasn’t able to find anything in particular for them

Hi Alexis – like the reader above, I am concerned about long term use of the patches, but for different reasons. My understanding, from a biochemist who has her own natural skincare brand, is that anything that is stretching the skin or even plumping it out so that you minimize or don’t see wrinkles, will in the long term cause harm and damage to your skin. She has photos on her website of how horrible older skin looks after years of this kind of treatment. I would be interested in your comments on this. Thank you

What is her brand name? I would be interested to see this. Most cosmetic chemists I know say that things like this don’t harm long term, but you might want to ask the manufacturer if they have any data on long term use. I know that my grandmother used “Frownies” for decades and it didn’t have a long term impact for her. In fact, her skin was unusually youthful in her 80s. Frownies actually pull the skin too.

Plastic wraps don’t have adhesive, so you wouldn’t be able to get the same seal. It also wouldn’t create the same environment on your skin compared to these silcone based products. I have used some off brands and also tried a few DIY versions with the wraps used for scars…it didn’t have any result unfortunately. I stick with this brand because it has worked for me

Hello! I’ve been trying to decide what brand to purchase. (Either SiO or) I found a brand on Amazon called Blumbody; it has over a thousand positive reviews! On their item description though the don’t state that it’s 100% medical grade silicone. They state it’s “made from silicone that won’t irritate your skin, no harmful fillers, chemical adhesives or other harsh additives” and that it’s made with the highest standards. It also specifies these ingredients – Silicone Gel, TPU, Silicone Adhesive (Methylhydrosiloxane, Vinylmethylsiloxane, Polymethylhydrosiloxane).

Is this the same composition as medical grade silicone essentially? I’ve been trying to figure it out but could use some help lol

Blumbody is a little more affordable since you get double for the price of one SiO essentially.

They are very similar to SiO, but they don’t stick well at all! I have tried them along with a few other knock off brands on amazon. I have found the adhesive not to stick well, and they come off at night. They also don’t last as long, so I only get about 5-6 uses out of them as opposed to 15-10 with the SiO brand. As far as medical grade, it is the adhesive that makes these more potent. I think this is why this particular brand works so well, but also a little more pricey. Hope this helps!

        Yes, thank you!
And yeah, I was wondering if the Amazon one actually was “medical grade silicone” and that’s why I wrote the ingredients down 🙂

    Alexis,
Thanks for the review. There are many brands of silicone patches made with medical grade silicone. Will many be as effective? Then there is medical grade silicone sheets used for scarring that stick quite well. I know because I used them after an accident, but not on problem wrinkle areas. Silicone scar pads were not cheap but some of the pads for wrinkles on Amazon, Walmart etc are less expensive than the brand you review.Grateful for advice.

I have tried many brands on Amazon, but they didn’t stick as long. I only got a few uses out of each one before they pretty much had no adhesive left. I felt like they were a waste of money even though they were cheaper. Also, the cheaper brands and the silicone patches made for scarring didn’t have as strong of an adhesive, so I didn’t get the same results. I get more out of this Sio brand than all the other types because they last so long. I feel like they work better too because the adhesive is really good. I am sure you can try out anything you’d like to see if you enjoy using them, then maybe upgrade to this brand which is a little pricier, but better quality.

You getting paid to make the statements that you’re making ? Don’t fall for the expensive SIO brand there’s alternatives out there I wouldn’t spend that kind of money You’re simply endorsing SIO. Tell the truth to these people.

Hello Alexis, have you tried the Dieux reusable eye patches? They are also made of 100% medical grade silicone but you can reuse them up to 1 year. The other difference is you use them with eye cream or serum and only for 20 min. How are they different to the Sio eye patches if they are both 100% medical grade silicone? Is it a different type of silicone?

I haven’t tried this particular brand, I will have to check them out. In regards to SiO verses some of the other cheaper brands I have tried, the silicone is the same. It is the adhesive that is different. The cheaper ones I have used from Amazon don’t have good adhesive, so just after a few uses they lose their stickiness. The adhesive is key to creating the moisture environment on the skin.

Hi Alexis, thank you for your blog!

Did you try Oia patches? I saw a lot of advertisement and they say it is very thick medical grade silicone. If you did, would you recommend them more than Sio patches?

        Thank you!

Hi! I have not tried this brand before. I looked them up, and it looks like they are more expensive than the SiO brand. I am sure they will work similar! The biggest difference I have seen in all brands of silicone patches is the adhesive used, not necessarily the silicone itself. If you try them out, let me know what you think!

I bought them and giving them a try, I also like to use Frownies so will see which of them I will like more. Frownies seem easier to use and more environmentally friendly:)

I like frownies too! They are definitely different and do more of a pulling versus a plumping, but they are still a good thing to add. They are part of our old-fashioned skincare tips post 🙂

No, the “chemistry” is not there. Please don’t make claims like that.

It is suggested that somehow these patches stimulate the production of collagen by improving circulation to the skin. I’d like to see the evidence to support that.

You don’t say how long this effect lasts. That is an important question. An hour? All day? For days? There are products that reduce the *appearance* of fine wrinkles by irritating the skin which “plumps” it by causing low grade swelling.

I don’t find this review to be well written or convincing. I was hoping for some information I could trust. You very well could be right but nothing about this review sounds well-informed. I’ll keep looking. I think I’ll consult an actual dermatologist.

This is a strange comment lol you should
Contact the manufacturer of this product. This is just my experience using them. Any concerns or questions should be to the brand who makes them. There are many brand options, but these work best for me. I explain in detail how long my results lasted and talk about them IG stories. But again, just sharing my experience using them. Do your own research and always reach out to manufacturer. I don’t write things to get people to buy them, just love sharing things I use and what works for me.

Hi! My mom is 64 and she loves using the under eye patches, she said it smooths the area for her. The manufacturer claims you can use these at all ages even aging skin.

How do I use it? should my skin be free from any products? is it best to use while I sleep? or can I use it while I clean the house? or lounging in front of the TV?
what should I do after use and it’s been peeled off?

The directions are listed on the package in more detail, but they recommend using it after you have washed your face and skin is dry. Overnight use is best, but any amount of time is okay too. I use them many times in the morning for a few hours if I have some free time. I wouldn’t use them less than 2-3 hours at a time though. After you are done using them, just put them back on the plastic form they come on.

I tried the Sio patches from Amazon, after 2 days use they aren’t sticking! I’m going for a refund. I’ve been very careful. I’m 68 with pretty good skin, except for nose- mouth frown lines and scar on my neck.

Maybe I’ll check out liquids – Murad etc.

I buy mine from Amazon too. Mine last 15-18 uses. Did you have any product on your skin? Did you rinse them or wash them after use? Either one of those will diminish the adhesive. I would definitely reach out to the manufacturer though because that is very unusual for the Sio brand!

    Hello.
I appreciate hearing your opinions on the patches. I am in my early thirties and I have a crease across the middle of my forehead that I’d love to get rid of. My hang-up on these patches is how complicated it might be to adjust the timing of my nightly skin products. For instance, with Frownies, you need to wait about 30 minutes after washing your face and moisturizing to get them to stick. Because of this, I lack consistency in using the Frownies.

Do you apply your retinol before using this product at night? Do you need to wait to put them on after allowing 30 minutes for moisturizer to sink in?

These are products need to be used on a clean dry face. What I like to do is rotate them. On nights when I use these, I will skip my other products. I use these a few times a week. I also will use these in the morning after washing my face. I will keep them on for a few hours in the mornings too.

Rejuveline works the same way! The only thing I didn’t like as much about Rejuvelines patches is the adhesive wasn’t as strong, so I didn’t get as much use out of them as this brand. They also didn’t stay on as well, so I had to keep adjusting them. But, they do have the same benefits!

Great post! I Know all the instructions say to use the patches on clean and dry skin. However, my impression is that this is just so that the adhesive continues to work and the patch stays on your skin. Not necessarily because it is “bad” for your skin to have a serum on with the patch on top. Do you think there would be a benefit to using serums, such as Retin-A under the patches if you were to get them to be able to adhere to the skin for longer, such as with tape that some of the companies provide?

You can use serums underneath, but in my experience using these, anything on the skin inhibits these patches from creating that moist environment to get the most out of the “plumping” aspect. Using it on dry skin creates that connection making these work stronger. I’ve used these patches with serums but I have found them to work better on dry skin 🙂
