Welcome back to Chemistry Cachet! Today, we’re sharing a quick guide to effortlessly clean your window sills.
Often overlooked, these areas can significantly impact your home’s overall cleanliness.
Let’s check out some simple and effective cleaning methods for cleaning your window sills today.
The Easiest Ways To Clean Window Sills
Why Does Window Sill Cleaning Matter?
Window sills accumulate dust, pollen, and other allergens. When these particles are disturbed (opening a window, setting something on it, brushing up against it), they can circulate in the air, affecting your respiratory health. Regular cleaning helps minimize these allergens!
Another very important reason for regular window sill cleaning, mold and mildew can thrive in the moist environment of window sills, especially in humid climates. Cleaning helps prevent growth of mold and mildew.
Lastly, dirty window sills can make your home look dingy. If you have large windows as the focal point of the room, but the sill has dust or grime built up, it can really take away from the overall look.
But don’t worry, we’ve got some quick tips you can try today. Not only will this get your window sills clean, it also works very efficiently so you won’t waste your time.
Quick Window Sill Cleaning Hacks
Here are my top tips that have proven to be the most efficient. Keep in mind, these tips are going to be for traditional wooden window sills that are painted or stained. Not all of these tips are good options for natural stone window sills. For instance, I have quartz window sills in my bathroom, so I utilize tips for cleaning quartz not window sills.
Use a Handheld Vacuum or Attachment To Remove Dust First
Your cleaning will be more effective if you remove all the dust first. The easiest way to do this is with a handheld vacuum or the attachment part of your vacuum cleaner.
Vacuuming avoids spreading the dry dust particles around during wet cleaning, which would require more wiping and cleaning time. If you don’t always do this or don’t do this first when you go to clean window sills, try it out and see how much quicker your cleaning goes!
The Easiest Ways To Clean Window Sills: Make A DIY Window Sill Cleaning Spray
Here is the best tip you can make now. You probably have these ingredients already on hand!
Here is the recipe:
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup regular white distilled vinegar
- 1 tsp dish soap
- Spray bottle (I use these because it also works for any recipe with essential oil)
- Mushroom funnel everyone loves (optional)
** To make it easier for you, we created an Amazon list that contains all the item used for this post.
Directions:
- Mix these ingredients in your spray bottle, give a gentle shake before spraying.
To Use:
To use this DIY cleaner, spray your entire window sill area. With a microfiber cloth or sponge, wipe the window sill in a circular motion. You can use this on the sill, track, and around the window too. This solution can even be used on the window itself (check out this recipe being used in our homemade outdoor window cleaner post).
This works on dust, dirt, pet stains, pollen, mildew, and more.
Don’t Under Estimate the Power Of A Damp Microfiber Cloth
Here we are again with the coolest science tip, using damp microfiber for cleaning. It is one of the quickest ways to clean a window sill! If you don’t make your DIY spray mentioned above or your short on time, that damp microfiber has the power to remove all types of stuck on grime.
Here is a little chemistry tip for you on microfiber. Microfiber’s incredibly fine, split fibers create a large surface area and tiny grooves, enabling them to lift and trap dirt, while dampness enhances this by loosening grime and drawing particles into the cloth. The resulting electrostatic charge also attracts dust, making it a highly effective cleaning too!
Use Compressed Air To Get Dust Out Of Small Corners
I had bottle of compressed air for this blog post I did last year, and I tried it out for cleaning those small to reach little metal grooves around the metal window frame that the window sill attaches too! This was super quick and handy, plus it reached the spots my hands and cloth couldn’t get too. I recommend try out this little hack in addition to your window sill cleaning routine.
Follow Up With A Dusting Spray To Keep Dust Accumulation Away Longer
After your window sills are really clean, you can lightly apply a dusting spray to a handy DRY microfiber cloth, then wipe down all the wood. I actually make my own DIY dusting spray found in our eBook here. You can also use this non-toxic store-bought version. Dusting spray actually works better when you apply to a clean surface, and it can really slow down dust accumulation. This will make your cleaning faster and more efficient!
I hope this blog post on my favorite window sill cleaning tips and tricks makes your cleaning easier!
