Easy French Press Coffee Tips

I’ve said it before, but it is absolutely true, coffee is the ultimate chemical!

The chemical processes going on when you brew up coffee is so intricate and in depth, but ultimately produces the best, most satisfying drink known to the world!

You can pretty much thank chemists and chemistry for your daily liquid sanity. So, in true chemist fashion, I have been experimenting, researching, and learning my way through all types of coffee brewing methods. First, I played around with cold brew coffee and came up with some great tips and a delicious recipe. I have compared that recipe to some store bought ones, and let me tell you, it is better!

Coffee is liquid Sanity!

Picture above from my instagram…local coffee shop 🙂

Next up on my list is french press coffee, so let’s talk easy french press coffee tips. Many coffee connoisseurs prefer the french press method due to it’s gentle brewing, smooth flavor, and simplicity.

I really wanted to see what all the hype was about and I wanted to figure out some of the best tips to share with you.

Here are my super easy french press coffee tips that you can do at home!

Easy French Press Coffee Tips (from a chemist) plus an easy recipe to make your own at home!

One. Always use a course ground coffee in a french press. If the grounds are fine, it has a tendency to get through the filter, or even clog it up.

Two. Use a medium to dark roast, if you use anything too light, it probably won’t be strong enough. Since you aren’t using really hot water, or brewing for long, you still want to make sure you get the best flavor. Other than that, any type or flavor is great!

Easy French Press Coffee Tips

Three. Heat up your water to boiling, but then let it rest for one minute before pouring into a french press. If the water is boiling, it can burn the grounds and produce a really bitter flavor. Instead of getting all technical with temperature, simply bring to a boil and then let it rest for just a minute! Then, it will be the perfect temperature.

Four. Clean out the french press right after using it! I have known people to leave it too long and the ground dry. This can cause little pieces to get stuff in the filter. It will just make your life easier!

Five. The best ratio I have used and highly recommend is 1 tbsp of grounds per 4 oz of water. Since I like to have (at LEAST) 8 oz of coffee, I use 2 tbsp of grounds and 8 oz of water. It works great!

Six. Allow it to steep for 4-6 minutes. Don’t wait too long or the water will cool off too much!

Seven. Always pour slowly into your mug. If you do it too fast, you can risk getting ground into your mug.

Now, the steps for french press coffee are simple.

  • Heat up your water in the microwave or on the stove top.
  • Once it boils, rest for one minute.
  • While the water is heating up, place your grounds at the bottom of the french press.
  • Once water has rested for one minute, slowly pour onto the grounds.
  • Add the lid to the press and let it steep.
  • Then slowly press the top down all the way.
  • Pour slowly into a mug, enjoy!!

Here is my Favorite recipe for my french press coffee:

  • 8 oz french press coffee
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 packets stevia
  • tiny drop of maple syrup

So delicious! So, now you have some easy french press coffee tips that you can use at home. You will love this method if you are a coffee lover! French press coffee is so smooth, you can also turn it into iced coffee and it is wonderful!

French presses are very affordable too. I love this KONA French Press Coffee Maker!

Next up I will be sharing with you my newest brewing obsession that I talked a little about in my newsletter that came out over the weekend! Do you get my newsletter? LOVE these tips. As a die-hard liquid sanity connoisseur (that sign is perfection), I’ve experimented pretty heavily with French press and am horrified to admit it isn’t my favorite. It’s probably because I never let the water sit for a minute; I always pour it into the pot boiling hot and it always makes it taste mehhh. Of course, it would burn the grounds. Duh!

Thanks for the recipe and the tips!

I love that sign! Oh yes, you should definitely try it again. Those burned grounds can really make it taste terrible 🙂 I hope you can make it again soon 🙂

I’m pretty sure that I’m going to have to invest in a french press now, especially now that I have a new recipe to try! My day definitely isn’t started without coffee. I usually take mine in iced form because I can drink it so fast haha! Thanks for sharing your recipe and how you like the french press =)

You should definitely get one Brittney! It just adds a little something extra to your morning. Although, this is probably a better method for the weekend since it does take a little longer…and I totally feel you! Gotta have the coffee as fast as possible some mornings 🙂

French press is the only way I ever make my coffee at home! Makes THE best coffee, I agree. Just another little tip for you…when you pour the water into the French press and it’s sitting there 4-6 minutes (I do 5 minutes), I cover the top of the carafe with a small wooden cutting board to keep the heat in. 🙂

That is a really good idea Melanie! My french press actually has a top that twists shut to keep the heat in, but I know many of them don’t! It definitely does make the best coffee!

Thank you for this! I want to get a French press since my Keurig finally died for good and I’m the only one in my house that drinks a daily cup of coffee, so a big coffee pot that I have to lug on and off the counters sounds so inconvenient.

That is how I am too. My husband doesn’t drink it, so I hate having something just for me. The french press is perfect for that since you can just put it up when your done and it is so easy to clean. I really love it!

Liquid sanity, I do like the sound of that. We are big on coffee in our house, up until lunch time anyway. Anything after that and I would be awake all night. Nice tips on making a good cuppa.

i think the cold brew made with the Filtron coffee maker is the best. The coffee is low-acid and does not iritate the stomach. The concentrate can be kept in the fridge for really ‘instant’ coffee. It has a non-bitter taste. It is really good on ice cream. Just pour a coffee measure-full in the bowl of ice cream.
