This easy homemade yoga mat spray is such a handy thing to keep in your gym bag!

Not only does this work for yoga mats, but you can really use this for ANY workout equipment you need to get that sweaty smell out of!

I have used this on my workout bands, mats, yoga blocks, and pilates band.

Stay tuned for AFTER the recipe to learn how and why this works 🙂

Easy Homemade Yoga Mat Spray Plus Cleans Other Workout Equipment

Ingredients You Need for homemade yoga mat spray:

  • 10 drops tea tree oil
  • 20 drops rose water concentrate oil
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda (optional)
  • Enough to Fill 1/2 spray bottle with rose witch hazel toner
  • Distilled water
  • Small spray bottle

Directions for making homemade yoga mat spray:

  1. In your small spray bottle, fill it up halfway with the rose witch hazel toner (see diagram below).
  2. Add in the tea tree oil and rose water oil.
  3. If using baking soda, add this in now with a funnel if you want to make sure it all goes in. Baking soda will combat odor even further, but CAN leave a residue, so only add this if you have a really funky smelling mat!
  4. Fill the rest of the bottle up with a little distilled water.

How To Disinfect Your Yoga Mat:

Remember that disinfecting and cleaning are two separate steps. This DIY yoga mat cleaner is fantastic for daily cleanings and wipe downs. Typically, once a week, I will take time to disinfect my mat also.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Use this DIY yoga mat spray to clean entire mat.
  2. Follow up with pure 70% rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.
  3. Spray entire mat with the alcohol, and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
  4. Wipe off.

There is really no need to disinfect more than once a week. If you only use your mat once a week, you can even do that every few weeks. I keep this DIY Spray bottle in my gym bag and clean my mat off with it after each use. Tea tree oil is a great anti-microbial, but it is important to disinfect in a separate step. Remember to read this article to learn more about this 🙂

Chemistry behind this DIY yoga mat spray and cleaner

I know everyone loves learning about the WHY behind our DIY posts, so let’s discuss the reason behind these items.

Tea Tree Oil For Yoga Mats

The most important aspect of this spray is the tea tree oil. We talk often about this particular essential oil because it is such a great home tool for making your own cleaners. In fact, I would say it is probably my number one used essential oil for making things to clean. Tea tree oil has a high anti-microbial activity. Not only does it kill germs, but it also kills viruses and eliminates odors. It is the key ingredient in this two ingredient mold cleaner because it kills mold quickly and safely. There is no need to use an expensive oil for this recipe either, I just use Now brand when it comes to cleaning.

Be sure to head over to this very thorough post on the chemistry of tea tree oil. For this recipe, tea tree oil cannot be substituted. I know some people don’t like the scent of it, but there should be enough rose concentrate in this so it smells really good. If you really don’t like it, you can use peppermint oil which is also anti-microbial (although not as potent).

Quick chemist note about tea tree oil → I have had some readers asking about this being toxic to animals. Well, most essential oils are toxic to animals, so always be aware of this. This spray is very mild and not heavily concentrated, so it is safe to use around the home. It is going to be more safe than most store-bought cleaners, but still use caution as with any DIY cleaner.

Rosewater Concentrate Oil

The rose in this is for a pleasant scent. It is so calming, but also energizing at the same time. Rose oil also contains anti-microbial activity, and it also has great astringent properties. Although I mainly use this for scent, it also is a great tool for combating odor and germs on your yoga mat (or other workout equipment). This particular oil is called rosewater concentrate. It makes a cheaper option to get the rose essential oil in. If you were to purchase plain rose essential oil, you would notice how expensive it is! A small bottle can be over $45! You don’t need anything like that for this recipe. Again, this oil is for scent and a little antimicrobial benefit.

Witch Hazel Toner

I love this witch hazel toner. In this post, I talk about how I use it daily on my face. It is fantastic for cleansing the skin. Witch hazel i is also a great cleaner for things around the home because it fights germs and eliminates odor.

I love the one with the rose in it because it smells so wonderful! If you don’t like the smell of witch hazel, this toner is a great option!

Spray Bottles

I love these little bottles for this recipe. They are made of glass, so it works good for the essential oil mix. I also love the cap on top, so you can pop this in your gym bag without any leaks!

About My Yoga Mat

I have had a few questions about this yoga mat too. It is much thicker than other mats I have used which I love! I have been using it for a few years now and love it. The thickness is great for my knees if I am on them, but it also cushions your bottom when you are just sitting.

Things This Works On!

You can use this for almost everything! Your workout bands, bars, weights, yoga blocks, etc. It is perfect to store in your gym bag! I would recommend using this on your PERSONAL items, not anything in a public area just in case someone can’t be around certain ingredients.

Enjoy!

Good info… do you think this would work on my boxing gloves – they are open fingered – so there is air flow. Do I wipe after I spray or just let it evaporate? I need to do more research into tea tree oil.

You can definitely use them on gloves, really anything! If your gloves are slick material, just wipe with a microfiber after. If they are cloth material, you can lightly spray, then let dry 🙂
