Today, we are sharing an easy way to clean glass bottles or containers!

This cleaning hack is perfect for anything glass you can’t get clean or reach into.

I have a glass bottle I use for collagen or water, and it gets a film on it all the time.

The only problem is I can’t reach into it, and bottle brushes don’t get it very clean.

Our tip today gets it CRYSTAL clear in a just a few minutes.

Easy Way To Clean Glass Bottles Or Containers

Quick & Easy Way To Clean Glass Bottles, Jars, or Pots

I shared this tip in our salt cleaning post years ago, and shared this instagram reel last month. The reel was so popular, I thought this deserved a post too.

Ingredients you need:

  • Ice cubes
  • Table salt

Directions:

  1. Fill glass container halfway with ice cubes.I do a mix of whole cubes and crushed.
  2. Add in a few tablespoons of regular table salt.
  3. Out the lid back on. If container doesn’t have a lid, cover it with something secure like foil or press and seal. Just something to allow you to shake.
  4. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds or until ice starts to break up.
  5. Rinse under warm water.

That is all there is to it! So simple and so easy!

Here is just a quick photo tutorial for you below. Keep in mind, I snapped these with my phone for Instagram, I never thought this would be such a popular idea! So, this is just a quick reference for you.

After filling with ice cubes, now you add your salt.

Now you add a lid or cover to the top of your container, and shake!

Shake as long as you want, but I try to do about 30 seconds or until everything starts breaking up.

Now a quick rinse with warm water!

Here is a little comparison for you. Before shaking with the ice and salt, you can see the bottle is a little murky. After rinsing, it is crystal clear.

This is such an easy thing to do for all glass! Try this on your coffee pot too!

How does this work to clean glass??

On Chemistry Cachet, we always share the science behind how things work. Readers love this!

The science behind this is simply friction. The hard ice cubes combined with salt and shaking, make friction against the glass. I compare it to exfoliating your skin. It works the same way!

Ok, that was awesome! I have 2 watercolor paint jars that I can reach into, but trying to get the paint out if I let it sit too long has been a pain. I even found some bottle scrubber things that helped, but still didn’t get it. I even used brushes and they didn’t even work that well. This ice/salt trick did it and did it quick!

Can this trick be used on stainless steel (lol) thermos bottles?

I use this on plastic and it works pretty good. You can try! It won’t work as well as the ice against the glass because it won’t create as much friction, but it is certainly worth trying. Let me know how it turns out!
