Today’s post is Facts about Maca and Why you Need to add it to your diet ASAP!
You may have heard the name Maca floating around the internet lately, and it’s for a good reason. Maca is an incredible super food that has numerous benefits.
At Chemistry Cachet, I like to research these health topics for you and share scientific evidence as to why a certain product is so healthy! Like the true benefits of Himalayan Pink Salt, or why lemons are one of the healthiest fruits, and even why pineapple is so good for you! I’ve also touched on why decaf coffee is probably not something you should have.
Today let’s look at the facts of Maca and how to use it properly.
PIN THIS
Maca is actually a root and part of the cruciferous family which also contains things like broccoli and cabbage. This root has so many properties that classify it as a super food.
You will typically find Maca in a powder form since it is typically ground up from the root. This powder can be added to almost anything like smoothies or yogurt.
Another interesting fact is Maca is grown in South America, usually in the mountains.
So, why do you need to add it to your diet?
First, check out this long list of nutrients actually found in Maca. It has things like amino acids, vitamins, calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, phosphorous, zinc, iron, and so many more.
The most interesting thing about Maca is it’s considered an “adaptogen” meaning it naturally helps the body adapt to stress and illness, or anything that can cause your stress level to rise. There are so many herbs and plants that are in this list, this source has a great list of other ones.
Women’s Health
The biggest scientific benefits of Maca is the impact is has on women’s health, particularly menopause or women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Research has show that Maca can restore hormonal imbalances by aiding the endocrine system. It can also aid in healthy hormone production.
Energy
There are multiple studies showing that Maca is great source of energy compared to caffeine. It doesn’t give you the caffeine crash or jitters either, just a nice natural energy booster. Having more energy comes with it’s own benefits like better moods.
I am always looking for ways to increase energy levels since I have RA. This array of supplements and vitamins has helped tremendously over the years, but adding Maca into the mix has really enhances it too.
How to Use It
When I introduce a new supplement or healthy item to my readers, I always get questions on how they can use it. I thought I would share with you how I have been using it. The good news is Maca doesn’t have a bad taste, in fact, it is always sweet with a slight nutty flavor.
I highly recommend adding it to food, like smoothies, oatmeal, or yogurt. It is best to have this while you eat so it won’t upset your stomach. You can also find Maca in capsule and extract form. The extract form can also be added to many foods.
What Type of Maca to Use
There are actually a few different types of Maca Root. You can use this New Maca Finder – Find the Right Maca For You! I am currently using the Red Maca to add to my smoothie in the morning (top picture).
You also want to make sure to always use an organic, non-gmo Maca to avoid using something that is full of extra things that aren’t good for you. I really enjoy Original Raw Maca from The Maca Team. It has such a pleasant taste, it’s vegan and organic. I have tried some other brands from the local grocery store that weren’t very good quality. They had a little bit of a bitter taste!
The Maca Team powder in the 8oz bag is a great choice to start and this bad will last FOREVER. I use about 1 tsp in my smoothies at a time.
Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions about using Maca!
