Most people think spring is the perfect time to clean…which it is a great season to deep clean after the cold days of winter. I really think fall is the best time to clean though! The weather has cooled off, the leaves are changing, the smells are incredible outside, and everyone feels renewed.

Here is Chemistry Cachet’s fall cleaning checklist to help you make the most of this wonderful season!

By the way, my friend Bre designed some incredible GIFS for Chemistry Cachet including the spray bottle you see in the first picture! She makes the coolest things! I can’t wait to share more of her designs with you over the next few months. You can check out her work on Instagram . These GIFS really add something special to your online presence.

Okay, on to the autumn cleaning directory!

Chemistry Cachet’s Fall Cleaning Checklist

Chemistry Cachet's Fall Cleaning Checklist

The other morning I stepped outside, and everything smelled so fresh! We had some rain, but the morning was cool with a very slight breeze. I immediately felt invigorated and wanted to put that energy into some cleaning.

Please follow us on Instagram for more videos and behind the scenes with exclusive tips like this too!

Here is a great fall cleaning checklist you can incorporate along with your normal cleaning routine.

Let’s Start In The Kitchen!

Clean/Deodorize Trash Cans

After cleaning them well, sprinkle some essential oils to make them smell even better. I love to use orange for fall!

Clean/Deodorize Sink and Garbage Disposal

I use this recipe for cleaning the kitchen sink. Even though I clean my sink often, it is a good idea to do a serious deep cleaning with the fall season. You can sprinkle baking soda and dish soap into garbage disposal and run it until soap dissipates.

Freshen Oven

Fall is really the baking season in my opinion. It is the perfect time of year to get your oven nice and clean, and ready for all your seasonal baking.

Disinfect Commonly Touched Surfaces

This is obviously something you should be doing often depending on where you go, but take this time to disinfect door knobs, faucets, refrigerator handles, and things like this. Remember to follow our important tips on the proper way to disinfect with some common household items like rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. For more great tips, you can also check out the podcast we did.

Clean Refrigerator and Freezer

Fall is also a great time of year to get your fridge and freezer cleaned out and prepared for baking and freezing. I like to use our everything vinegar cleaner for cleaning the fridge. If you don’t have the eBook, you can also use this homemade window cleaner which is very similar to the vinegar cleaner 🙂 It is vinegar based, so safe for this type of surface. You can also clean with warm water and soap.

Wipe Down Walls & Back Splash

Cleaning the walls and back splash area of your kitchen which is probably dusty and dirty from summer. Allergens are high this time of year, so eliminating dust is important. Just wiping off with a warm towel and dish soap is good for this.

Clean Out Pantry

Every season, I like to clean out the pantry in anticipation for different meals we will be making. Plus, it is a good time to make sure you have inventory of what you have or will need for fall cooking. I am always amazed at how many things I have in the back of my pantry! Also, wipe down and vacuum shelves and floor in the pantry too.

Remember to do this along with all of your regular cleaning like counters, floors, etc 🙂

Fall Cleaning Checklist Tips for Living Areas

In addition to your regular cleaning, here are some things to add to your fall cleaning checklist for your living areas! Doing these before winter and before the holidays is important!

Clean Ceiling Fans

You are probably getting ready to keep ceiling fans off until spring or maybe you already have. It is the perfect time to clean them. Here is what I do to make it super quick! Take a pillow case (I use a king sized one and it covers all of the blade), wrap it around each blade and wipe it off. After you finish all of the blades, follow up with a damp microfiber cloth to remove the rest of the dust.

Clean Fireplace/Chimney

You can vacuum out the fireplace and double check the chimney. If you use your fireplace often in the winter, it is worth having a chimney sweep come in too.

Clean Walls

Vacuum Couches/Chairs

Clean Rugs

Clean Carpets

You can steam clean the carpets to prepare for winter, or try our homemade carpet cleaner or homemade carpet refresher.

Try These Additional Fall Cleaning Tips For Bedrooms

Next is the bedrooms! These don’t get as much attention since they aren’t common spaces, but there are some some items to add to your fall cleaning.

Wash Sheets in Hot Water

I read an article the other day that said to wash your sheets in hot water weekly this time of year to kill allergens. Allergens are very high in the fall, and using hot water is the best way to address this in your sheets.

Flip Mattress If Possible

We can’t rotate or flip our mattress due to the type it is, but I always do this for Amelia’s mattress.

Clean Ceiling Fans

Use the same method we share in the living space area.

Clean Out Closets/Clothes

This is the perfect time of year to go through your closet as you get ready for the change of seasons. I love cleaning out the closet, getting rid of clothes to donate, pulling out summer clothes to pack away for the season, and giving everything a refresh.

Fall Cleaning in the Bathrooms

You probably clean the bathroom weekly, but there are a few things to add to your list for an extra deep cleaning. Make sure to do the following in addition to your regular bathroom cleaning 🙂

Bathtubs/Showers

Obviously, a good deep cleaning of your bathtub and shower is a good idea. I also like to double check the drains, the caulking, and check for mold. The moisture from the warm summer can sneak up, so it is important to look for these things. Autumn is also a good time of year to make sure all of your drains are working well.

Clean Vents

With cooler months ahead, you will probably be using heaters in the bathroom more. You want to make sure all of your bathroom ventilation is clean and working well.

Clean Baseboards

During spring and summer, there will be many dust allergens floating around the home. The bathroom will have

Toilets

This is a great time of year to deep clean your toilets, and also clean the water spouts inside from hard water. I like to use this DIY mold remover for hard water build up inside toilets too!

Outside

  • Sweep
  • Prepare plants for winter
  • Check gutters
  • Refer to fall garden checklist

Make Your Home Smell GREAT too!

Lastly, autumn is the season of wonderful smells. Make your home smell like the holidays, but also make sure it is free from malodor (more on this soon).

First, get rid of musty bad smells with these incredible zeolite rocks. Place bowls of them around the home to absorb bad odors. These are fantastic for closets, bathrooms, drawers, or any other small space. You can also use them for kitchens and bedrooms, just increase the amount you use for larger spaces.

After you get rid of the bad odors, now you can bring it wonderful holiday smells. Check out this really fun post we did last year on making sure your home smells wonderful for the holidays.

Great check list. Seems like I’m always cleaning something! Dog and husband always leaving something around. ? Wondering is you’ve written a post to clean the dishwasher and washing machine. I know there are chemical products out there. My washing machine manual says to use chlorine bleach and run the clean cycle.

I have not done a specific post on that yet! That’s a good idea and I need to write something for that soon. I do like to place a cup of vinegar in the dishwasher and run a quick cycle while it is empty. This helps with odor elimination 🙂 but I’ll do a guide soon for those

How can you clean and with what the arms of your couch? I can throw the seat covers in the washing machine but I don’t have a machine the cleans arms of courches nor can I afford one. Do you have any helpful hints?

What material is the couch? There is usually some type of code on the couch tags which will tell you what type of substance is good to use. Here is a link to help you know what the code means and what you can use to clean it. It will either be soap/water, rubbing alcohol, or a combination of both 🙂

Oh, I see the second reply
My couch has no codes but it says,
Body- Polyurethane foam 25% and Resinated Polyester Fiber 75%
Back (which needs cleaning also) is 100% Resinated Ployester Fiber.
Also do I use a toothbrush or kitchen brush or cloth?
Thank you so very much. Boy does it need cleaning. I always just throw the seat covers in the wash and they come out beautiful.

I would use a solution of warm water and dish washing liquid like dawn (something like 2 cups of water and 1 tbsp dawn), scrub it with a soft bristle brush, then follow up with a damp rag that is just water. Since it does so well in the washing machine for the covers, you should be able to clean it fairly well with just some soap.
