Yesterday, I a did a guest post over at Alanna’s blog sharing my favorite winter date ideas! I mentioned a little bit about one of my favorite Valentine’s Day I shared with my husband, but I wanted to talk a little bit more about that fun memory today!
Truth be told, I have never been much of a romantic. In fact, Valentine’s Day used to make me BARF, especially in high school. It really irritated me all the couples doing their flowers, chocolates, dates, etc. I was a little bit of a scrooge about it I guess lol.
Anyways, when I first starting dating my husband in 2005, I mentioned to him many times, how much I hated cheesy romantic stuff and was not a fan of Valentine’s Day. He always laughed at me about it and agreed too.
Our first Valentine’s Day in 2006, he had a HUGE bouquet of pink roses sent to my dorm room that morning before I went to classes. The note attached said ” Valentine’s Day isn’t so bad when someone loves you 🙂 ”
Of course my heart melted and I decided, it wasn’t such a bad holiday 🙂
Anyways, my favorite Valentine’s Day memory is one that sticks out in my mind over all the others.
It was our first one as a married couple in 2008, and we wanted to do it really big! We were stationed in Oceanside, CA at the time, so we had plans to go to San Deigo, get all dressed up, eat somewhere fancy, and really make it traditional. At the last minute, the Marine Corps made his unit stay late for something and we missed our reservations and it was too late to make any others.
At first I was bummed out, and totally disappointed that our Valentine’s was ruined! We couldn’t decided what to do, and our area was a complete madhouse for Valentine’s Day, so there wasn’t a place to eat either. So, we decided to just grab some food and eat at the beach, since we only a few minutes away.
It was a beautiful warm, 70 degree day. There weren’t many people on the beach either.
The sunset turned out to be one of the most incredible ones I have seen! It was breathtaking, relaxing, and totally inspiring!
After we ate, we decided to wander down the beach as far as we could go, just to see what was there.
We saw some of the cutest homes and unique architecture. We also discovered some neat walking paths that were totally secluded and hidden.
Honestly, we had a blast! We kept walking until dark, then headed back to our truck. We stopped off for ice cream at a little shop we found and stayed there talking until late that night.
It was not what we planned at all, but it turned out to be the best evening. To this day, we still talk about that Valentine’s Day when we were first married. Back before my husband was sick, before life was complicated with adult stuff.
Such a fun memory that we will cherish forever!
We are still pretty low key for this holiday. This year, my husband is in intense training for law enforcement, and has to get up around 3am each morning, so our nights end soon. We plan on taking our boy to the park (supposed to be a warm day!) and having a picnic lunch, then letting him play fetch (his favorite ever!) How sweet, I enjoyed reading your post. Anytime you are with the one you love is great, it doesn’t matter where, you are together and making memories.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Thanks so much Syliva! That is so true, being with the one you love its really what counts, not the even itself! Happy Valentine’s Day! Have a wonderful week!!

I’ve found in my life that it is the unplanned that often becomes the most memorable. I love the photos – especially those little houses.
Alexis says
That is so true!! I loved those houses too. I wish I had a professional camera back then, but I still love looking at the pictures from that day 🙂

Such a sweet memory! My oldest sister and her husband are very similar. He is the sappy romantic and she is typically a “scrooge” about romance and cheesy romantic gestures. But she has become a little more romantic since she met and married him. It’s really cute to see how couples like that balance one another out and bring out the romantic in each other. Thank you for sharing! Happy Valentine’s Day!!

That’s so funny! But it is neat how we balance each other out…sometimes I think that is what makes marriage so great!! Thanks so much, have a great vday!!!

This is so sweet! It’s the best when plans get messed up but wind up better than ever.
Alexis says
Thanks Christine!! I love that too!!!

Yep – that note would melt my heart too! I can’t be with my other half for valentines this year, so I have hidden a present in the house for him 🙂
Alexis says
That is so sweet Holly! It is fun to do things like that when you can’t be together!

Aw! I love this story and these memories! That’s so sweet! Yall look so young in that pic! Sounds like awesome plans this year too! ?

We were sooo young! It is funny how long ago it was, but how well we remember it 🙂

Love both of your Valentine’s celebration posts. Sometimes it’s the off-the-cuff, serendipitus events that are the best – you can appreciate the special-ness, the memories may be more heartwarming, and bonding. Hubby and I are not fancy-schmancy V-Day celebrators, either. We’d prefer to go on non-V-Day so the restaurant staff isn’t rushing around, and we can enjoy the atmosphere. And diners and hole-in-the wall food places are great! Don’t know what we will do this year, yet!
Alexis says
That sounds like a much better idea for Vday to me too! Those are always more fun and enjoyable! Thanks Laurie, have a wonderful afternoon!!

Your’s is a lovely memory. You’ll have it to remember for many, many years to come.
My favorite Valentine’s Day memory is a first as well.
I was 15 years old and there was a boy who kept following me around school. He was kind of creepy. He snuck up behind me one day tickled me. I HATE BEING TICKLED!!! I swung around and kicked him!
Well, we got a little friendlier. He was always hanging around with my friends. I decided to give him a chance. I started making him a gum wrapper chain. When it was 5′ 9″ tall I gave it to him with a card that a picture of a can of dog food on the cover. Inside it said, “Valentine, sometimes I get strangest the urge to bite you in the leg!” I crossed out “bite” and scribbled in “kick”. Valentine’s Day, 1975 was my first kiss. I married him 3 years later. Now, 41 years after that first kiss, he has owned all my kisses.

Judy, that is such a sweet and funny story! Congrats on 41 years too, how wonderful! Thanks for sharing with me today 🙂

Sounds perfect to me! I would love a stroll along the beach and casual dinner any day over a fancy restaurant.

I agree…low key and peaceful is the best!

Sounds like my kind of Valentine’s Day. I’m not one to get all mushy about it either Alexis. I suppose we have Valentine’s all the time, just the fact we know we are here for one another. Those houses, incredible. Would love to see them in real life. Thanks for sharing this today on Tuesay Talk.
Alexis says
So true Michelle!!! I loved those little houses too. They were always so dreamy to walk around and look at! I miss living near the beach 🙂
