You are going to love these glass shower door cleaning hacks we are sharing today!
By the way, did you know the term hacks means a strategy or technique for a managing one’s time or activities more efficiently? This is why many of our cleaning posts are referred to as “hacks” because they are all about time efficiency!
I bring this up because when one of our posts went viral this summer, there were some “comments” about using the term hacks. Someone said well these are tips not hacks. I thought it might be helpful to point out what the word hacks actually means and why we use it for posts like this 🙂
Glass Shower Door Cleaning Hacks That Will Save You SO Much Time
These are things I have collected over the years. I have had a glass shower door for 15+ years, and I have had several different types.
I have tried many methods to see what works best. I have even let me shower door get so dirty so I can test out which of these ideas works best and quickest! When we moved into our new house earlier this year, no one had ever cleaned the shower. I was shocked at how bad the glass shower door was. I tried out many methods to see what was the best, quickest, and most efficient way to get it looking like new.
Let’s get started.
Squeegee After Use
The most important tip in this post today is keeping a handheld squeegee in your shower. Using this every time you shower will cut down on the amount of time you need to clean your shower door. It is important to get a small sturdy one like this one. Small and sturdy allows for quicker, more efficient movements on the glass.
If you utilize this tip, you will only need to clean your door every few weeks!
Maybe even less.
Clean Weekly With A DIY Vinegar Spray
If you have a shower door with a coating on it, a great thing to use is a weekly vinegar spray. In our how to clean a glass shower door post we talk about this. This is also good for regular non-coated doors.
HOMEMADE GLASS SHOWER DOOR CLEANER
This simple DIY glass cleaner is great for removing hard water stains.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup vinegar
- Microfiber Cloth
Directions: The glass shower door manufacturers recommend a 4:1 ratio of water to vinegar. I like to use 4 cups of water to 1 cup of vinegar. Feel free to use more or less depending on what size you are cleaning. Remember to keep this ratio.
- Spray entire shower door top to bottom.
- Allow solution to sit about 3 minutes.
- Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth, buffing out any streaks. Using microfiber is very important for this step. This type of material is soft on glass, but also removes all moisture. It cleans well alone too, but combined with the vinegar/water solution, it is very effective.
Use The Pink Stuff For Bad Hard Water Stains
This is the best hack I have tried for the glass shower door so far! When we moved into our house earlier this year, I don’t think anyone ever cleaned the shower including the glass door. It was in bad shape. I tried everything for it, but the pink stuff ended up making it sparkly clean after one use!
Here are a few ways to use it.
First, you can apply it dry, then buff off with a microfiber cloth. This works really well for heavily stained doors. Or you can do the easier way and apply it with a sponge while the door is still wet. Rub in a circular motion, then wipe off with a microfiber or rinse off.
If you really want to save time, do it right after you take a shower and the door is steamy! You can buy the pink stuff here from Amazon, and it is less than $6 right now. This container lasts forever too.
Try a Magic Eraser For Stains
One of the first tips we shared on Chemistry Cachet for shower cleaning was using a magic eraser for glass stains. This works great for hard water stains or soap scum stains on the door.
Clean With A Damp Microfiber Cloth
An easy glass shower door cleaning hack is simply using a damp microfiber cloth. I do this weekly on the outside of the shower door that doesn’t get hard water stains, but just regular dust. If you just want to keep up with cleaning the inside of the door, this is a good thing to do every few days. A damp microfiber will really do wonders for basic cleaning!
Use Chemistry Cachet’s All-Purpose Cleaner Every Few Weeks
I love our DIY all-purpose cleaner for glass and mirrors, and it is great for the class shower door! This is also a tip I have heard from readers over the years, and I love using it too. It is an alcohol-based cleaner, so it works to make the door free from soap scum and dust. It also makes it shine. If you own our eBook, this is the cleaner found on page 13. This homemade spray is by far everyone’s favorite recipe for just about everything! Remember the vinegar spray mentioned above is targeted more for hard water build up.
One Last Glass Shower Door Cleaning Hack…
I am mentioning this tip because I have had several readers the past year write me about this.
Spray Rain-X Shower Door On The Glass To Last Longer
I have had several readers write me about using this product. One reader even said she only cleans her glass door once a month because she uses this! It works like the typical rain-x you use on the car, but it is made specifically for your glass shower door. I have never used this before, but I wanted to add it in here if you are a professional cleaner and looking for a product specifically to do this. We have many home cleaners follow our website, so they appreciate tips like this! You do NOT have to use this tip, but I wanted to add it in to share what other readers have used 🙂
Does It Matter What Type of Glass Shower Door?
When we remodeled our master shower in our old house, we put in a shower door that came with this protective coating on it. If you have a modern door like this, I would not use The Pink Stuff or a Magic Eraser on it. It will stay clean with regular squeegee, microfiber, weekly vinegar spray, and even just soap and water.
Most people don’t have the coating, so all these other tips are great to use on any regular glass shower door!

Hi,
I have the Pink Stuff.
How long do you need to leave it on the shower door to get the hard water off of it?
Alexis says
Good question! You just rub it on, then wipe it off. It doesn’t need to stay on very long 🙂

I don’t think you should use any product bought or DIY with vinegar in it IF you have a finish on your frame. The vinegar erodes the finish and it will eventually peel off. I had this experience and eventually had to replace my doors. The new shower door co told me NOT TO USE ANY PROCUCT WITH VINEGAR in it.

My new shower door was installed with a product called EnduroShield which is a finish on the door to help with hard water and water droplets. The instructions from EnduroShield are where I got the dilution for the vinegar recipe shared in this post. When you dilute vinegar, it makes the pH higher and closer to neutral. Always follow the manufacturers instructions though or make sure to always dilute vinegar to the appropriate ratios 🙂
