Handy Uses For Baby Shampoo That Will Blow Your Mind
I first thought about this post after we shared our homemade lawn food recipe many years ago.
A reader said why would I buy baby shampoo instead of something else? Another reader asked what should they do with the leftover shampoo?
This post will share with you what you can do with baby shampoo AND what exactly makes it useful.
Don’t forget to check out our eBook for a list of our favorite DIY cleaners.
What is the difference between baby shampoo and normal shampoo?
The biggest difference in baby shampoo vs regular shampoo is the ingredients are more mild. The foaming agents are more gentle than regular shampoo. The cleansers in a baby shampoo are made to not be irritating to the eyes or skin. This makes it a more gentle solution.
A baby shampoo still has surfactant properties without being strong or harsh. These benefits are also what makes it good for the tips below.
Make a Homemade Lawn Food
First, the most popular garden post on our website is this homemade lawn food. You can make this with several ingredients including baby shampoo! The baby shampoo helps the solution to adhere to the grass and soil. It is more mild and gentle than regular detergents, so it works great for this recipe.
Hand Wash Microfiber
If you want to hand wash things like microfiber, baby shampoo makes a really great option. It is gentle, but great for removing dust, dirt, oil, or grim. You can fill a sink or bowl with warm water and about 2 tbsp of baby shampoo. Let the microfiber soak for 10 minutes, then scrub it around inside the water soap mix. Rinse out in warm water.
Hand Wash Delicate Clothing
If you have any delicates to hand wash like bras, lace, or even vintage clothing, use the same method as we mentioned above to hand wash them! I did this with some of my old dresses we saved for Amelia. It was very gentle on the fabric, but helped clean off dust and dirt. Baby shampoo is a better choice for hand washing clothes compared to regular detergents.
Clean Makeup Brushes
Using baby shampoo to clean makeup brushes is one of my favorite tips! It cleans them so well, but it is also safe for your skin. I fill a jar with about 4 ounces of warm water. Add in a few teaspoons of baby shampoo. Let them soak for a few minutes, then scrub them out on a silicon pad or with your hand. Rinse in warm water and let air dry.
Remove Stains On Clothes
The way shampoo works makes it clean oily or protein based stains really well. I keep a bottle of baby shampoo in the laundry room, and I will drizzle some of the shampoo on a stain or dirt spot on the kid’s clothes. I scrub it and let it sit, then throw it in a normal wash. This works great for basic stains or boosting laundry especially for children’s clothing!
Clean Jewelry
Baby shampoo is awesome for cleaning jewelry. It is so gentle, you can use it for all types of jewelry even fake or plastic. You can do this several ways. I like to drizzle some baby shampoo on a microfiber cloth and wet it with some warm water. I will wipe off jewelry with this. You can also soak rings or earrings in a baby shampoo mixture. Use the same one we mentioned above for makeup brushes!
Remove Kid’s Band Aides
I do this for Amelia! Since baby shampoo is gentle on the skin and won’t burn, you can remove sticky band aides with baby shampoo. Drizzle some on a rag or paper towel, run it under water for a few seconds, then rub the band aide and skin area with the stickiness. It makes removing the band aide easy and painless!
Wipe Off Leather Chairs or Couches
Baby shampoo is awesome for cleaning leather because it is gentle, but works as a surfactant to remove dirt. You can make a warm baby shampoo solution by mixing about 1/4 teaspoon in a bowl of warm water. Take a soft microfiber cloth and dip it in the solution. You want the cloth to be slightly damp, then wipe off the leather.
Also Use It For Leather Clothing Like Jackets
We have also used this to clean off leather jackets! Use the same method as you do for leather furniture and wipe off the jacket.
What Type Of Baby Shampoo Should You Use For These Tips?
Anything you have on hand is fine! If you don’t have baby shampoo, you can buy a cheap bottle at the store and keep on hand for some handy tips! I actually buy the off-brand baby shampoo at my local grocery store like you see in the picture. I keep it in the laundry room or bathroom and use it all the the time.
Even if you don’t have babies at home, you can certainly benefit from keeping baby shampoo on hand!
This bottle was $2.50 at the store for 13.6 oz. That makes it very affordable to use for one of this cleaning tips or in the homemade lawn food!
I hope you enjoy these great uses for baby shampoo!

Or women should just use it for their hair, doesn’t strip like adult shampoos. Used it for years.

Can baby wash be used in the same way? I could not find the shampoo but they had baby wash…what is the difference?
Alexis says
They are very similar. And some baby wash is a combo which can be used as a shampoo too. It should work fine though. Typically
Body wash won’t have the same surfactants as a shampoo, but for baby products both are mild.

When I had a screw driver go through my hand my doctor told to not use antibacterial soap wash my hand and to only use baby shampoo to wash with. The screw driver was a puncher wound that went in one side and out the other. I was shocked how fast it healed with using the baby shampoo to keep it clean. I had some left over and run out of hand soap when I had come in from working in the garden. I grabbed the baby shampoo and used that. Wow! All the dirt came right off. Even from under my nails. Now this is all I use for hands after working side.

You can also use Baby Shampoo (I use Johnson’s) to clean your eyelashes and eyelids to help avoid Stye infection when oil glands on the eyelids get clogged. I do it once a week.

That is a great tip! If you get false lashes, they recommend using baby shampoo to wash them too
