I make many variations of glass cleaner, but this homemade glass cleaner continues to be my favorite. It is ammonia-free too.

This was first published in the eBook in 2016, and readers love it.

I have used this mixture for about 10 years, and it is always the best solution for cleaning dirty mirrors or glass of any kind.

If you own the eBook, you can also use the famous all-purpose cleaner on page 13 for glass.

This solution below is just more specific to glass.

Cheap and Easy To Make Homemade Glass Cleaner (Ammonia-Free)

You can use this for mirrors or any type of glass around your home.

If you are looking for glass shower door cleaner, be sure to read this post for DIY cleaners and tips for shower doors.

Reasons Why Homemade Glass Cleaner Is The Best:

You might be wondering if it is eve worth it to make a homemade glass cleaner, and the answer to that is yes it is!

Here are some of the reasons why making a DIY glass cleaner is an easy and better choice:

  1. It is very affordable – this DIY solution is very cheap to make. The ingredients put together are very affordable. The large container of rubbing alcohol I purchased was $2.98 at Walmart for 32 oz. That comes out to about 9 cents per oz. You only use 4 oz for this, so that makes the rubbing alcohol 37 cents per batch. The water is free. The little bit of dish soap comes to pennies. Once you purchase the spray bottle, it will last years. I have had this particular one for about three years now.
  2. Less harsh chemicals – many store-bought glass cleaners contain ammonia or more harsh chemical that can affect people with breathing issues. Or it can just add too strong of an odor in the air! This cleaner is so mild with very little scent to it with the perfect addition of water.
  3. It works really good!! – Lastly, one of the best reasons to use this DIY glass cleaner is how well it works. It works better than one of the store-bought containers I had on hand. I used them both to see. It not only removed every bit of dust and toothpaste, but it left the mirrors sparkly too!

Don’t forget to check out our basic, tried and true DIY Cleaners in the eBook.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol (Amazon or Wal-Mart)
  • 2 drops of dish soap
  • Spray bottle ( I love the continuous spray bottles)
  • Mushroom Funnel (because everyone loves this!)

**👩🏻‍🔬🧪 To quickly shop ingredients for this, head to our Amazon list specific for this post.

Directions:

  1. Mix up the ingredients in a spray bottle and store for as long as it lasts. This solution can be stored for several years.

How To Use This Homemade Glass Cleaner:

This solution is great and so easy to use. Simply spray the area, then wipe with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. Be sure to dry the area completely for the best streak-free finish.

If your mirror is extra dirty, you might need to apply this twice.

Here are some before and after pictures using this homemade glass cleaner on my dirty and dusty makeup mirror:

How Does This Homemade Glass Cleaner Work?

This is an easy DIY cleaner that works very simply to clean your mirrors and glass.

Rubbing Alcohol

The main base of this cleaner is rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is always a great choice for DIY cleaning because it works great for all surfaces and removes dirt and dust well. This solution contains more rubbing alcohol than our all-purpose cleaner because it is specifically for glass. With more rubbing alcohol in it, it cleans glass better and also makes sure there are no streaks after cleaning.

Water

The purpose of water in this solution is to help the ingredients mix well. If you look at the back of any store-bought cleaner, you will see water listed as one of the main ingredients. Water has a naturally high surface tension. This is why when you wipe off a counter with just water, it will remove debris. It doesn’t remove it all, but it dissolves dirt or certain food particles. Water is also a universal solvent, so it mixes well with the other ingredients. It is a key part of this solution!

Dish Soap

There is just a little bit of soap in this. It is just enough to have scrubbing power, but not too much to leave any film or suds. As you know, Dawn is typically my dishwashing liquid of choice  because it performs the best out of all the brands I have used including things like Castile soap. For the best streak-free shine, Dawn worked the best for this.

Rubbing Alcohol Vs Vinegar For Cleaning Glass

You will see rubbing alcohol and vinegar used in homemade glass cleaners. You might even see them together! In our homemade outdoor window cleaner, the vinegar worked better in that DIY Cleaner. I tried all the ratios and ingredients until I narrowed down the recipe for the outdoor windows.

Hard water stains also clean up better with vinegar-based solutions like the one listed in our glass shower cleaning tips.

For indoor glass like mirrors or maybe glass tables, I found the one in this post with the rubbing alcohol, water, and dish soap to work best for removing dust, toothpaste, and making it completely streak-free. The all-purpose cleaner in the eBook also cleans mirrors well!

These are just helpful tips to keep in mind.

We have very hard water. I found that by using distilled water in my DIY glass cleaning recipes made a tremendous difference. At $.99 per gallon, it’s well worth it!

I used distilled water as well for all my babies stuff and my steam cleaner. It is definitely helpful! The one I buy at Walmart is only $1.26 per gallon though.
