Do you have neighbors or friends that own dogs? These little homemade grain-free dog biscuits are a really fun gift idea!

I like to hand out homemade gifts to neighbors during Christmas, and this is a great addition!

Of course, you can make these just for your dog too. Ruger is CRAZY about sweet potatoes! I make them all the time for us to eat, and he must have a little bite! This recipe is very similar to the dog treats recipe from earlier this year, except this one is jazzed up a little bit more for the holidays!

Homemade grain-free dog biscuits

Homemade Grain-Free Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, baked until soft
  • 1.5 cups coconut flour
  • 5 tsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 natural strips of bacon, cooked and crispy, diced into small pieces
  • Melted peanut butter for drizzling
  • Dog bone cookie cutter

Directions:

  1. These are so easy! Cook the sweet potatoes in the microwave (about 8-9 minutes for each one). You can also bake in oven.
  2. Smash up the sweet potatoes until creamy. Leave the skins on, or take them off. I like to leave them for a rustic look or remove them for a more precise look.
  3. Add in the coconut flour, oil, cinnamon, diced bacon, and cinnamon. Stir until just combined, don’t over mix.
  4. On a flat surface, press out this “dough” until it is about 1/4 inch thick. It may seem like this dough won’t stick together, but just work it like a biscuit dough or pie dough. It will form together. It reminds me of a play dough texture. The thicker these are, the chewier the biscuit. The thinner, the more crispy. I like them crispy, but a little soft.
  5. Cut out into dog biscuit shapes or any small cookie cutter.
  6. Spray a baking sheet with spray and place them evenly on the tray.
  7. Bake at 350 for about 20 – 30 minutes. You want these to be firm and cooked through.
  8. Cool on a wire wrack.
  9. Drizzle with melted peanut butter if desired, then allow it to dry before packaging.

Packaging Tips: These will last a few weeks in an air tight container. You can also pop in the refrigerator if they start getting soft after a few weeks. Just make sure these are completely dry and cooled before storing.

Chemist Tips for Making Homemade Grain-Free Dog Biscuits

Unlike most regular baking, there isn’t much science behind these. Chemically, all these ingredients are really good for dogs. This recipe uses coconut flour as a binder instead of wheat based flours since grains can be hard on dogs. Our bulldog can’t eat any wheat without having allergy issues.

Small amounts of coconut oil are also really good for dogs and helps their coats stay shiny.

Sweet potatoes are are a great base for these homemade dog biscuits because they are so health for dogs, and make these stick together really well. For another dog treat recipe that doesn’t use sweet potato, check out this easy fun dog cupcake!

These look delicious from a human standpoint – sweet potatoes and bacon! If Ann were here, she’d be chowing down on there so fast – she loved bacon and sweet potatoes. Looking forward to reading through your ebook – congrats and thank you for devising these safer and effective hacks!

I’ve made dog treats before, but not with bacon – I know our dog, Daisy, would absolutely love these – it gives me an idea of what to make for her for Christmas!

Lola would love these treats. It’s always tricky trying to find grain-free treats for her. She loves sweet potatoes and pumpkin. I didn’t know bulldogs could have peanut butter.

Ruger loves pumpkin too! He goes crazy for these treats all the time as well, I try to keep them on hand 🙂 Natural peanut butter is good for most dogs, he gets a little on special occasions and the vet said it is good for him.

    Coconut and Coconut Oil
When ingested in small amounts, coconut and coconut-based products are not likely to cause serious harm to your pet. The flesh and milk of fresh coconuts do contain oils that may cause stomach upset, loose stools or diarrhea. Because of this, we encourage you to use caution when offering your pets these foods. Coconut water is high in potassium and should not be given to your pet.

Hi Bill! Coconut oil is great for dogs. Our vet said is was a really awesome healthy fat for their coats and skin. Most fruits will give dogs diarrhea and upset stomachs, even though they love them. Even though our dog loves watermelon, he can only have a tiny piece here and there. But coconut oil is a great fat/binder for dog treats 🙂

Thanks Alexis! My mini Aussie Ace is the same way. Any small bit of grain and he’s all inflamed. So this would be the perfect treat. I want to try it for sure!

The dough ends up very loose and chalky. It can’t make it stick together enough to roll into a dough. Any suggestions on what I can add to cause it to stick together more?

    Thanks!

This dough is very sticky! I always make sure to wet my hands with warm water to press it out. I haven’t had my dough chalky before though. I would try adding in some more oil to see if that helps
