Everyone enjoyed our DIY all-purpose cleaner with an autumn theme so much, I decided to share a wonderful easy homemade cleaner with a Christmas and Winter theme.
This fresh, festive smelling cleaner will carry you through the Christmas season and all the way through winter.
It smells like a wonderful Christmas tree or cold snowy winter day.
Seasonal cleaners are so much fun, and so easy to change up all with essential oils.
Easy Homemade Multi-Surface Cleaner With Christmas and Winter Theme
Over the years, we have shared dozens of DIY cleaning options on Chemistry Cachet. In fact, many companies refer to us as a “Chemistry forward cleaning authority” because we share easy cleaners that actually work based on science.
I have received emails from readers the last few years saying they want to see more all-purpose type cleaners and want more essential oil additions for scents.
Remember, the essential oils give these cleaners scents! The only homemade cleaner that utilizes the essential oil for cleaning power is our two ingredient mold remover which uses tea tree oil. Other than that, there is not enough research for using purely oils for cleaning power.
But, they do provide wonderful safe scents for everyone!

Ingredients For Vinegar Based Homemade Multi-Surface Cleaner:
- 1 tablespoon winter dish soap (I love this snow drop soap)
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup distilled white vinegar
- 20 drops Christmas tree essential oil
- Glass spray bottle (We recommend these)
Ingredients For Alcohol Based Homemade Multi-Surface Cleaner :
- 1 tablespoon winter dish soap
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol
- 20 drops Christmas tree essential oil
- Glass spray bottle (We recommend these)
Directions:
- Using a funnel, add all ingredients to a glass spray bottle. Since a large amount of essential oils are being used, make sure to use glass.
- Give mixture a good shake before spraying each time.
Essential Oil Swap If You Don’t Like Pine or Evergreen Scents:
Adding this in there for people like my husband who DON’T like Christmas tree scents! 🙂 I also make this Christmas themed by doing peppermint essential oil! I make them both ways and either essential oil is a great scented option for Christmas and winter.
When to use the vinegar solution over the alcohol solution?
If you have followed Chemistry Cachet for awhile, then you are familiar with vinegar vs rubbing alcohol. As an acid, vinegar has very specific uses, but it is NOT all-purpose. It is more if a multi-surface cleaner. Rubbing alcohol is more of a all-purpose option.
Here is how to use the vinegar based cleaner:
- Surfaces for food preparation like cutting boards
- Inside refrigerators
- Kids toys
- Hard water stains
- Ceramic
- Toilets
Here is how to use the alcohol based cleaner:
- Counter tops
- Floors
- Walls
- Baseboards
- Blinds
- Windows, Mirrors
- Natural stone
Do I have to make both??
No, this is really your choice. Many people do not like the smell of vinegar, so you can easily make our alcohol based option. If you need to clean a lot of food surfaces like cutting boards or refrigerators, things like that, make the vinegar option. Just remember, vinegar cannot be used on granite, natural stone, grout, or marble.
How Long Does This Last?
This will last months and months. You will use this solution up before any possibility of expiration, so no need to worry about the shelf life. It is important to always give this solution a good shake before each use to distribute the oils and soap.
The science behind how this DIY multi-surface cleaner with a Christmas theme works:
The best part about all of our homemade cleaners is the ingredients have a specific purpose to make it work! In addition to having specific purposes, everything is also put together based on science, so you can trust it!
Distilled White Vinegar
Vinegar, acetic acid, is a great addition to homemade cleaners. Before we go further, please remember vinegar is NOT ALL-PURPOSE! Acids cannot be used on natural stone or grout surfaces because it can cause damage overtime. Due to this, we have a rubbing alcohol version to make an all-purpose cleaner. Vinegar is a good choice for refrigerators, bathtubs, toys, plastics, sinks, ovens or hard water stains. Visit our complete guide on vinegar to learn more about using it for cleaning.
Rubbing Alcohol
The second version of this cleaner uses rubbing alcohol which is my favorite all-purpose homemade cleaning ingredient. Not only does rubbing alcohol enhance the water and dish soap for cleaning, but it has power to get off food stains, dirt, and overall cleaning.
Dish Soap
Dish soap is an awesome household item to add to DIY cleaners. It is a great surfactant, easy to use, and mixes well with other ingredients. Our favorite plus the most powerful dish soap for homemade cleaners is Dawn brand. However, for these seasonal cleaners, I like to use seasonal dish soaps. It is your choice on this! Dawn makes homemade cleaners work best, but you can sub anything you have on hand.
Water
Water is actually an important ingredient. If you look at the back of any store-bought cleaner, you will see water listed as one the main ingredients. Water has a naturally high surface tension. This is why when you wipe off a counter with just water, it will remove debris. It doesn’t remove it all, but it dissolves dirt or certain food particles. Water is also a universal solvent, so it mixes well with the other ingredients. It is a key part of this solution!
Essential Oil
These are just for scent in this recipe. Essential oils are a great way to change up homemade cleaners for the season 🙂
Does this cleaner also disinfect?
No, it doesn’t! But remember, to make a good homemade cleaner you actually don’t want it to also be a disinfectant. The reason for this is you want a solution to be safe for constant use on surfaces. Head to this post on cleaning vs disinfecting to learn more!

Question – the recipe for the all purpose alcohol based autumn scent cleaner has 2 cups of water plus 1 T dish soap and 1 T alcohol, this recipe has only 1 cup of water. Is that a typo or is either amount of water ok? thanks, I love making my own counter spray!
Alexis says
Hi! This one I used just 1 cup of water because this particular winter dish soap is not as potent, so I preferred the 1 cup of water verses the 2 cups. If using strong concentrate dish soap, 2 cups of water is good. But honestly, you can use either amount of anything in between and it is good! Thanks for checking on that!
