Here is the homemade patio furniture cleaner I have been using this spring!

It works great for metal, plastic, wicker, and glass.

You can even use it on the windows outside.

There is a reason I am using an alcohol base too. Be sure to scroll past the ingredients on the why and how it works.

Be sure to follow us on Instagram for more great tips and videos like this. I am also sharing an IG reel using this cleaner! You can see how well it works.

Ingredients for homemade patio furniture cleaner:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp concentrated dish soap
  • 2 tbsp 70% rubbing alcohol**
  • Spray bottle

Directions:

  1. Add the ingredients to a spray bottle. I use the glass ones found here so I can also add essential oils.
  2. You can use regular rubbing alcohol, but I really love the enhancement of citrus infused rubbing alcohol (picture above).
  3. Spray your furniture and wipe off with a cloth. I recommend microfiber or Swedish dish cloths for this!

Ingredient Swaps:

I like Dawn for outside use, it has great surfactant power on dirt and grime. You can swap any concentrated dish soap you have on hand, but it needs to be concentrated for this recipe. Like I mentioned above, I am using lemon infused rubbing alcohol in this recipe. You can also use regular 70% rubbing alcohol.

Is it safe to use on anything?

Yes! This is specifically put together to be safe on anything! Even stone or glass. This is perfect for metal, plastic, wicker, or any surface you have outside that needs to be cleaned. It will make everything so shiny and clean.

How Does This DIY Patio Furniture Cleaner Work?

These ingredients are things you probably see online ALL the time, but they are really fantastic in DIY cleaners. I have tested so many different ratios for cleaning different surfaces, so you will notice many of our homemade cleaners contain similar ingredients with slightly different ratios.

It is the ratios that help these formulas work for specific items.

Here is how this one is working for your outside patio furniture:

Water

I love using water as a base for cleaners. It is a surfactant too, and it helps everything mix well. Just use regular tap water for this, you don’t need anything special.

Concentrated Dish Soap

Using a concentrated dish soap, or dishwashing liquid as it is formally called, adds in the perfect scrubbing power. Dish soaps are surfactants for things like dirt and grease, so when you use 1 tbsp in this ratio you get the exact amount of suds needed to clean. There aren’t too many suds though, and it easily wipes off with NO residue. I always use Dawn for these recipes because it cleans so well. You can read more about that in this post.

If you don’t want to use Dawn or have another favorite dish soap, you can swap it. Just remember it won’t produce as much cleaning power.

Rubbing Alcohol

The reason I am using rubbing alcohol for this recipe is you can use it for any surface. It helps the dish soap work to clean off dirt and grime. Vinegar is another option, but it doesn’t work as well on all surfaces. Rubbing alcohol is all-purpose, plus it mixes well in this recipe and specifically for dirty patio furniture.

I use lemon-infused alcohol for most of my recipes, but you can use regular 70% if that is what you have on hand.

How Often Do You Use This?

As often as you would like! I use it every couple of weeks to once a month in the spring and summer.

I hope this comes in handy for you!

We have had so many great reviews on this cleaner by the way! Thanks for sharing them!

Do you need to rinse your items after cleaning? Can’t wait to try this. I use your citrus infused alcohol all the time. Thank you for sharing.

Hey Alexis! Thanks for the recipe. Going to try this. Have you done any reviews on 30 Second Cleaner? I’ve had some pretty amazing results with that stuff! Sprayed it on some OLD white vinyl lounge chairs I had. They had been through a monster flood. When the water receded it left behind inches of clay on everything, staining it badly. I had them tucked away because I wanted to see if I could get them clean- but I was highly doubtful. I finally got around to them and decided to give the 30 Seconds a try. Sprayed it on and checked the next day. It was completely clean- so white!! I was pretty happy about that!

Oh, and I just wanted to mention something I noticed.
Perhaps it’s a typo, but in a couple of places when you used the phrase, ā€˜dirt and grime’ – it is written as ā€˜grim’. Hope you don’t see it as me being ā€˜nit-picky’…guess it’s just the (former) teacher in me! ?ā€ā™€ļø?Patti

Hi! I have not heard of 30 seconds cleaner before! I did a quick search on the ingredients and looks like they use a “bleach” solution of Sodium Hypochlorite. I didn’t see other ingredients listed so I will have to read more on that to see if they use anything else in it. Thanks for telling me about it, I love looking up new products šŸ™‚

You’re welcome! They have two different versions- one you spray on and leave- no rinsing required, and the other one requires rinsing. One is concentrated too- which is the most economical. I’ve used both but I can’t recall if one worked better than the other. It worked wonders on my deck that was greying and had green slime from pine needles sitting underneath items for a few years, siding, cedar shake shingles, the unbelievably stained white patio chairs, cement stairs- I’ve used it all over! I’ll be interested in hearing your thoughts about it!

That’s great! From what I can tell, it is different concentrations of Sodium Hypochlorite. They say it is more safe than regular household bleach, but this is the same active ingredient as regular household bleach. So, it must be the concentrations that are different. I will have to look at the MSDS sheet to be certain on this though!
