This homemade rose petal potpourri is perfect for spring, but really anytime of year!

I had some leftover rose petals from Valentine’s day, so I thought I would create this easy, delicious smelling DIY potpourri mix.

You can make this at home anytime!

Homemade Rose Petal Potpourri

Homemade Rose Petal Potpourri Recipe From Chemistry Cachet

A few weeks ago, I shared some behind the scenes on Instagram on making this dried rose petal potpourri, and I had many requests for the recipe!

Roses are one of my favorite flowers, and I love how versatile the petals are for things. They smell wonderful, have soothing properties, and can be used for many different crafts. In a few months, we will be sharing another post  that goes into more depth on all the amazing things you can do with rose petals.

For now, here is one of my favorite DIY recipes. This is perfect for a bathroom or laundry room, even a bedroom where you want a fresh natural scent.

Ingredients Needed For Homemade Rose Petal Potpourri:

  • 2 cups Rose Petals
  • 1/2 tbsp Dried Lavender
  • Rose Essential Oil  ( I also like this one)
  • Glass Jar With Lid

Directions:

  1. First, lay your rose petals out to dry if they aren’t dried already. Spread them out on a surface like a newspaper to dry for a few days. If you don’t have fresh roses to do this with, you can buy dried ones.
  2. In jar, add in dried roses, dried lavender, top with 20 or so drops of essential oil.
  3. Shake the jar and set in a warm spot for a day (this helps petals soak up essential oil).
  4. Open the jar and enjoy the scent all day!

Important Tips On Homemade Rose Based Potpourri:

Make sure the rose petals are completely dried, otherwise it can cause a little bit of strange smell like flowers do when they wilt. I have created this recipe before and did not allow time for the roses to be 100% dried. If you want to offset the flower smell, you can add in a little bit of your favorite citrus essential oil to round out the scent! Sometimes, I add in orange essential oil for this. You don’t have to do this, but it is a nice combination.

To recharge scent:

Every couple of days, I like to add in a little more essential oil, shake the jar and keep lid closed in a warm spot again.

How Long Does This Last?

There is really no limit on how long this will last. The dried rose petals and dried lavender last forever. The scent of the lavender will eventually fade, but it takes awhile. Since you can recharge this with more essential oil, then you can keep using it for a long time.

Since this calls for fresh dried rose petals, they can eventually breakdown overtime, so that is all I would keep an eye on!

The Benefits Of Homemade Potpourri

I remember when potpourri was all the rage in the 80s and 90s. My mom would have a huge bowl sitting out of all kinds of huge and unique looking potpourri. The house always smelled amazing with the fragrances she chose. It was always different depending on the seasons too.

In the fall months, she would have a cinnamon apple scent. Christmas time was always an orange clove mixture, and summer months were usually a light floral.

Either way it smelled wonderful.

Most people don’t use potpourri anymore, and even more people don’t want fragrances in their home now.

But you can make your own with natural ingredients like this and get the same benefits!

Dried Rose Petals

Dried roses have a mild scent if you dry them at home. The best part about them is they will soak up the essential oil which is what gives it that potpourri aspect. If you purchase dried rose petals, they typically have a little strong scent.

Dried Lavender

Dried lavender makes a great addition to so many things because it is very fragrant! Just a tiny bit will leave a nice smell around the area for awhile. I purchased this bag of dried lavender, and it lasts forever! You can do many things with it, but I think it makes the perfect addition to a homemade potpourri. It pairs well with rose.

Rose Essential Oil

You will notice I typically use rosewater concentrate in many DIY recipes because it is cheaper. It is not pure rose essential oil, but still has a wonderful scent. You can definitely use pure rose essential oil if you have it, but don’t purchase anything expensive for this (some rose essential oils can be over $50). The rosewater concentrate is good, or a mix of rose like this one is another good option.

Other Essential Oils You Can Add To Homemade Potpourri

If you find the floral scent a little too strong, you can add in a little citrus essential oil like I mentioned above. I will add in a few drops of orange essential oil to balance this out. This is optional, but it is easy to do. You can also try a little lemon or grapefruit to round out the scent.

The dried lavender in this is very strong, but if you love lavender, you can also add in a little lavender essential oil too.

There are so many possibilities for this!
