Today, we are sharing a GREAT homemade spider repellent spray!
Since this blog was started in 2015 (nine years ago now), we have shared many successful bug remedies with you.
All of these recipes are very quick to make and have great reviews from all of our readers too.
You can make DIY ant spray, DIY roach spray, DIY fly repellent for porches, and DIY fly repelling spray. Each one is slightly different depending on the type of bug we want to kill or repel.
An important tip I have learned from making homemade solutions over the last 10 years is they require consistency. You need to be consistent when you apply this repellent, and you need to be consistent when you follow the other tips.
So, what is the best homemade spider repellent? This is it! Let’s check out the recipe.
Homemade Spider Repellent Spray
Everyone’s homes are different, but we all get bugs inside from time to time.
I have tried several different essential oils for this recipe, but the thyme oil was more successful at repelling the spiders. Keep in mind this doesn’t necessarily kill spiders, but instead deters them from coming back. I don’t like to kill the good spiders since they eat insects, but I wanted to deter them from making cobwebs in areas we use all the time.
Where This Can Be Used:
I use this around my workout equipment in our garage, patio furniture outside, and also a space in our bathroom they constantly make webs around. This has worked great!
Be sure to read more important information on getting rid of spiders below this recipe. There are many steps to take for this to work properly. When it comes to homemade solutions, consistency is very important.
P.S – Thank you to my little assistant Amelia for helping me with these photos 🙂
Ingredients For Homemade Spider Repellent Spray:
- 1 cup distilled white 5% vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp concentrated dish soap ( I am using lemon verbena in this)
- 30 drops of thyme oil (must be thyme)
- Glass spray bottle
Directions:
- Mix up the ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake gently before each spray.
How To Use DIY Spider Repellent:
The KEY to this working properly will be how you apply it.
Step One: Clean the area well where you want to get rid of spiders. This means you need to vacuum out cobwebs and dust plus wipe it off. You must start with a clean space to use this homemade repellent spray.
Step Two: Spray this homemade spider repelling solution all over the particular area you want to keep the spiders away from. You MUST spray this solution each day! This is how a DIY repellent works.
Don’t forget you can use this homemade spider repellent indoors and outdoors.
Do Natural Spider Repellents Work?
They do work if you take the proper steps. When it comes to homemade solutions, you need to be consistent in order for them to actually work. If you keep an area very clean and sprayed each day, it will repel spiders and keep them from forming cobwebs in the space you spray.
How This Homemade Spider Repellent With Essential Oils Works?
After doing some research over the years on natural spider repellent options, I started with a few ingredients I use often for any bug repelling spray for the home. Vinegar and dish soap have been very successful for me when it comes to insects. But I wanted to add an essential oil in this mix proven to deter spiders. Thyme oil is affordable, but also very effective!
Does Vinegar Really Repel Spiders?
The smell of vinegar alone is an excellent spider deterrent. Vinegar, known chemically as acetic acid, is one of the easiest bug repellents and sprays. If you spray a vinegar based solution onto most insects, it will kill them due to the acidity. Using it for a repellent is great as well due to the smell. I always use vinegar in my DIY bug repellent sprays for this reason.
Dish Soap
Dish soap is another great addition to any homemade bug spray or deterrent. First, dish soap itself can coat surfaces, deterring spiders from making their webs on the area the soap solution is sprayed. The scent of dish soap, often citrusy or fruity, can deter spiders as well. This is similar to the way the strong smell of acetic acid deters them. Lastly, dish soap is a great addition to homemade sprays because it helps to evenly disperse the other ingredients especially the essential oil. For this recipe, I am using the lemon verbena I had on hand. You can use any concentrated dish soap you have on hand.
Thyme Essential Oil
The key to this spray working so well is the thyme essential oil. There are dozens of essential oils used in homemade bug sprays, and I have found they all work differently. Peppermint oil is a very common option I have used in things like our diy roach spray. I tried peppermint oil first, but I was still seeing a few spiders making webs in areas. I did some more digging, and decided to try thyme oil. It is shown to be effective at deterring things like mites and ticks while some research shows it being effective for spiders too.
I had much more success using the thyme oil. The smell is also key to repelling spiders!
How To Get Rid of Spiders
What keeps spiders away permanently? A combination of cleaning and repelling is a very important key to keeping spiders away for good. Along with using this homemade spider repellent spray, I incorporate these other tips too.
Keep Your Areas Clean
One of the best tips to get rid of spiders is making sure your area is clean. This means regular vacuuming, wiping off dust, and making sure to clean behind spaces that aren’t touched often. Common spots for spiders to make webs are behind beds, dressers, or anywhere outside that isn’t excessively disturbed.
This is my number one tip to go along with this homemade repellent.
Also Keep Clutter Away
Make sure to keep areas clutter-free as well as clean. Something to focus on is keeping clothes picked up off the floor and towels picked up in the bathroom. Damp towels can attract many types of insects even spiders. My garage is the space I combat spiders, so I have worked on keeping this area more picked up, and there are much less cobwebs when it is tidy and items are stacked up against each other. This sounds like a no-brainer, but it can make a huge difference if you make sure to do this everyday.
Try Chestnuts
Have you heard of this home remedy before? I read an article recently about the use of chestnuts to deter spiders. The chemicals in chestnuts, just like with peppermint or thyme oil can repel spiders from the areas they are placed. I also read this tip in an old gardening book written in the early 1900s. Some say you need to cut or poke a hole in the chestnut to allow the oils and scent to be stronger. Either way, it is worth a try to repel spiders!
