I hope everyone is enjoying a long holiday weekend. My husband is actually off today, so I am looking forward to spending some time with him. This is actually the first Memorial Day my husband has had off since he was in the Marine Corps, so it is even more exciting that he his home!
Although Memorial Day has become an American celebration that most get the day off for, I always like to remember the true meaning of this holiday.
When I was in Junior High, my entire grade took a spring break trip to Washington D.C to see all the historical sights. It was a very packed, fast trip, but the memorial above stuck out in my mind. It is the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA. This website has a great summary of the meaning behind this statue you can check out if you aren’t familiar with it! Seeing this memorial at a younger age made me really stop and think about those that have served our country and all they have been through.
Most of my family was in the military. My dad’s brother and father were in the Marine Corps, my mom’s dad was in the Navy, my great uncle and great grandfather were in the Army during WWII, and my husband was in the Marine Corps.
I was recently digging through some old photos with my Grammy, who is 86 now, and her brother was stationed in Japan during WWII. Everyone that knows me, knows I am a total WWII buff, and love everything from that era, so seeing photos from that time is something I really enjoy. He passed away a few years ago, but he had a huge collection of photos he took in Japan and during his enlistment. They are obviously very old and not in the best shape, but I loved seeing him at such a young age. I only knew him as an old cowboy, but he definitely experienced some interesting things during the war.
I am very grateful to all those who have served our country and honoring the fallen on Memorial Day.
I hope you enjoy a nice relaxing day!
