How safe are my beauty products?

Many readers contact me on social media asking things like how safe are my beauty products? What are certain things I should avoid in make up?

Since becoming a chemist, my awareness of chemicals is very high. I constantly analyze packages, labels, and even read the MSDS sheets for many company’s products.

When I was writing Chemistry Hacks for Home and Outdoors, I researched all the store-bought version of the products to mimic them in a safe way. After reading many of the MSDS for popular cleaning solutions, I was even more excited about writing this book.

Beauty products are also complicated with literally thousands of different forms of chemicals used to make each one. Most of them are not bad for you, but are strictly for texture, structure, or color. Unfortunately, many dangerous chemicals are found in these beauty products too.

Consumersafety.org reached out to me with a graphic they made. I looked over the information and decided it would be important to share with our readers.

How safe are my beauty products?

As you can see, there are many chemicals found in every product you use. Believe it or not, I worked with and studied many of these chemicals getting my degree.

Be on the lookout for more chemist tips from us relating to your favorite beauty products, chemicals in makeup, and we also have some awesome DIY projects coming up soon!

If you have something specific to ask me, please comment or shoot me an email so I can include it!

It’s pretty scary when you read all the ingredients (let’s not talk about pronouncing them). The reference chart is really helpful. Thanks for watching out for us!
