Today I want to show you how to build your own rustic coffee table for less than $75!
We did this project a few weekends ago, and I LOVED how it turned out! Honestly, I am not a builder myself. I like to sand and paint, but leave the actual building to my husband. Luckily, he loves to build things and is good at it too!
I did intend on doing a blog post about this, but after many requests on Instagram, I decided to give you a quick post on how to build your own rustic coffee table!
Our previous coffee table was with us for all of our marriage (nine years!) and it was not adequate anymore. It was fairly small and didn’t really work for our house anymore. We are moving more towards rustic, slowly but surely.
How to Build Your Own Rustic Coffee Table for Less than $75
We wanted this to be rustic, so it didn’t involve evening out the boards, just sanding. That saves time and you don’t have to use a special tool for it!
The plans we followed can be found here: Rustic Coffee Table Plans.
This website has a great list of all the tools and lumber you need in detail.
Here is what we changed up:
His dimensions and information are pretty spot on. As you can see, we went with a lighter color, antique walnut. We wanted to match some other stuff and lighten up the vibe a little bit.
The cross x shaped on his table we decided not to do. We just went with the long piece for looks.
The other thing we noticed was he mentions 1 box 2 1/2″ Kreg Screws, but doesn’t say the amount. We ended up needing two boxes which were 50 count each.
Total Cost:
- The lumber came to about $45 total.
- The screws came to about $18 total.
- The stain was less than $10 and we didn’t use much of it. If you have stain on hand, I would use that!
My husband had all the tools and sand paper one hand, so we didn’t have to worry about that.
He also mentions the vinegar and steel wool wood distress technique. We did not take the time to do this! Vinegar does a great job of distressing the wood, but our wood had enough character to it already. As you can see below, it has some good character to it.
Tools You Definitely Need For This
You could probably get away with not using a miter saw, if you have other options, but this pocket hole jig tool is a must have! This is what creates pockets for the screws to go into so you don’t actually see screws on the furniture. It is so easy to use too and if you build things often, it is worth the investment for sure.
The beauty of this project is it doesn’t have to be perfect. The imperfect wood makes this really rustic and pretty! If you missed my post on coffee tables, check out my essentials for decorating your coffee table too!
Other projects we’ve built: DIY Pergola, porch swing, desk tray, rose trellis
Up next, we are going to make an entertainment center to match!!

Hi Alexis! Love, love, love this coffee table! Perfect size, and coloring! I like to do basic woodworking – I’m a little hesitant on using some power tools. But I can handle an impact (screw)driver/drill – all those deck screws from last year! Those miter/diagonal cuts wrangle my mind sometimes. I’d love to invest in the jig tool, eventually. Maybe we can make something other than planters from all the leftover deck boards! LOL

I am the same way you are! I love math, but physics isn’t my strong suite lol I bet you could come up with some AWESOME stuff with leftover deck boards! I wish I could come borrow some from you 🙂

It came out looking lovely and well you can’t beat the price. I like how the stain turned out without needing vinegar.

Thanks Emily!! The price was awesome and it was just what we wanted too 🙂
