Today we have a great post for you on how to pick the best gift on a budget.
My husband has a unique knack for always picking out a great gift, sometimes it’s something you didn’t even know you needed.
How to Pick the Best Gift on a Budget
People always ask him how he thinks of such great ideas. I decided since Christmas is right around the corner and black Friday sales will be starting soon, it was the perfect time to share with you a great post that can help you pick out a gift for someone, even if you are clueless as to what they want.
After reading through his post, I thought of multiple gifts ideas for some friends that I wasn’t sure what to do for this year. I think simple is sometimes the best approach to giving a gift, especially if the person doesn’t really need anything in particular.
I will let my husband take over from here!
1.Set your Price Range
Once you set your price range, stick to it. Don’t waste time looking for something that won’t be found in that price range or chasing sales. Sometimes when you wait for an item to go on sale, it won’t be available anymore. Or it could still be out of your price range. Sticking to a price will keep you from getting distracted.
2. Understand the Recipient
Spend some time in their shoes, think like they would. Remember you are buying for them, not for you. If you need to, do some research or find someone who has similar interests to the recipient to get some ideas.
Don’t be afraid to utilize the sales people in stores either. The trick is finding someone who uses the product, not necessarily just someone who knows about it. Many stores, like Lowe’s, have employees that also use the products they sale and have great tips or ideas.
3. Keep it Simple
The best gift is one that will actually be used. This goes back to number two, understand the recipient.
Focus on
- Where they spend most of their time or what they spend time doing
- Upcoming or current life events (goals, struggles, obligations)
- What may help them or make their life easier (not everyone likes help, but for those that do, this is an easy detail to think of)
After thinking about these three steps, are you still stuck or don’t have enough time? Use one, two, and three to narrow down to a gift card with a well-written card to go with it.
Cash can disappear quickly, but a gift card to the right place is where they may be going anyways. The addition of hand written card or note is also a nice touch.
Following these easy steps can help you narrow down better ideas without getting overwhelmed. Check out this post for the ultimate gift guide for men! Everything from tools to sports to stocking stuffers!

Awesome tips! Of course knowing the recipient, just because it’s something you’d like or find useful doesn’t mean the recipient will. And of course sticking to a budget 😀

So important to remember! Sometimes I have a hard time realizing I need to choose gifts for them, not sure something I would like 🙂

Great tips from both of you! My hubby also thinks about what to get me – if I mention that I like a color or a style, etc, it goes into his memory (never to be deleted – LOL!). I tend to do the gift card method for him, usually about sports or hardware, as I am not always aware of what he wants/needs or what’s on sale in his fave stores. Thanks to your guy!

Mine is the same way! I don’t know how he remembers things lol. You will enjoy our list tomorrow. He picked out over 75 items for guys that I would NEVER have thought of. It is so hard to buy for men!

I love gift giving and people seem to always love stuff I give and ask me how I do it. I love to shop year round for things based on what people like or are interested in, etc. It helps a lot when it comes to being stressed at Christmas!
Alexis says
I agree! It helps so much shopping throughout the year. I think shopping when you are stressed and on a deadline makes you pick out stuff without thinking much!

These are great ways to focus your thinking to figure out the perfect gift! I usually do something similar to this when buying a present for someone. It can be tough for people you don’t know that well, though!

It can be so tough buying for people you don’t know well! I love sitting down and being able to focus on all these things to narrow down a great idea!

Great tips! I’ve always struggled to buy gifts that are perfect for the recipient and not what I personally love. I’ve just started my holiday shopping so this should be very useful!

I do too! I hope these tips can help you find some ideas ?
