You are going to love this post today with these incredible grout cleaning hacks that restore and make your grout look new!
I have been working on this post since last year…and I finally have some ways to really turn your grout around even if it is in bad shape.
We moved into a new house last year. I loved everything about it, and it was not a very old home, so everything felt fresh and modern.
The problem was the previous owners NEVER cleaned, and that included the shower 🙁
The grout in the shower and the glass shower door were in such bad shape.
Incredible Grout Cleaning Hacks To Restore & Make It Look New!
So, How Do You Clean Really Dirty Grout?
I’ve said this before, but I will mention it again. If you do not keep up with grout cleaning, you can cause damage to the grout that cannot be cleaned.
You can kill mildew and mold with cleaner, but it can cause permanent stains that actually seep into the pores of grout. Grout is very porous, so it soaks up and holds moisture easily. The moisture can cause mold and mildew, but it will also stain the surface and even deeper.
This ruins the grout eventually, and it will cause you to have to redo the grout or even the entire shower.
Anyways, this is the case with our shower. The bottom grout was in BAD shape. We will eventually redo the shower, but that takes time and money. It will be a project maybe for next year or the year after. In the meantime, I have tested, cleaned, and tried everything to make it look better.
I must admit I am impressed with how it looks now!
Here are my fantastic hacks for cleaning shower grout and making it look new again!
Be sure to check out this post on glass shower door cleaning hacks, and how I got my glass shower door looking new again too.
Keep Up With Cleaning Grout Using This Homemade Grout Cleaner
What is the best homemade grout cleaner? This easy one with just two ingredients! If you keep up with your grout, it is SO much easier for you in the long run. This simple DIY will not only keep it clean, but also protect it from damage. It works for mold, mildew, and soap scum. I use this cleaner about once per month in between basic cleaning. When we installed our new master shower at our old house, I use this homemade cleaner often to keep grout spotless.
Use This OxiClean Pen For Really Tough Stains
In the picture above, I started working on this grout in the bottom of my shower testing products. I was super impressed with this oxiclean pen. You can see exactly where I stopped! Why am I using this oxiclean stain remover on grout? I was researching some hydrogen peroxide cleaning tips, and I was really digging into some of these Oxiclean products. The combination of solvents and peroxide in this applicator where very powerful. Even more so than peroxide by itself. This pen is so convenient too! I plan to keep this in my bathrooms for quick grout cleaning.
Restore Badly Stained Grout With This Grout Pen
Okay, I was a little skeptical about using this product. But my grout was very stained and beyond repair in many spots in this shower. Especially the corners! This grout pen comes in several colors. I went with the beige to match the grout.
This grout pen is AWESOME! First, you clean the grout. You can see in the picture above this corner was so gross and even after cleaning with everything, it is very stained. I applied this grout pen and it made the grout look like it did when it was first put in! After you use this pen, wipe off the grout with a damp cloth which removes excess product. At first I thought it might be a little lighter than the original color. But it darkens a little when it dries. It ended up being a perfect match to the existing grout.
Below, you can see the bottom of the shower before using this pen and after. Amazing difference! This pen is water proof too, so I have not had to touch up or reapply.
I used an entire pen on the bottom perimeter of this grout. I bought another one to keep on hand. If you have a large area to use this on, I would purchase two or three containers.
I am blown away by this pen, and it is so cheap! This makes my shower look more presentable, and I don’t feel as rushed to get it redone now.
Kill Mold and Mildew With This Homemade Cleaner
Another handy DIY cleaner for grout is this two ingredient cleaner. How does this differ from the first recipe with the peroxide and baking soda? Well, it is a more powerful mildew killer, but not as tough on stains. I recommend using this for spot treatments. If you see a little dot of mildew pop up on grout, spray this solution. Let is sit for a few minutes, then scrub it really well.
Use a Grout Cleaning Brush
An old tooth brush is great, but if you really want to scrub into weird angles and deeper into the grout, nothing beats a grout brush! This electronic one is fantastic. You can use it for cleaning other tight areas like around faucets too.
If you are cleaning grout on a floor and don’t want to bend over, then you need this tough brush with a long handle. It will save your back!
What About Grout On The Floor?
As you can see from these pictures, I used all of these tips for cleaning my shower grout. Shower grout tends to be the worst and hardest to clean. You can use all of these tips for the grout in tile floors as well! When it comes to cleaning grout on the floor, I have found success with just using a really good grout scrubber and warm water with a little soap. I never deal with mildew or mold on the floors. That being said, wherever your grout is, these tips can be helpful 🙂
