Chemist Tips to Make Your Home Smell Amazing for the Holidays
Most of these science based tips to make your home smell amazing are so simple to do! Many of the items you probably already have on hand. I have already gotten started on getting my house ready for family and friends 🙂
Keep a Bowl of Coffee Grounds in the Fridge
My first chemist tip for a wonderful smelling home during the holidays is coffee grounds. Coffee does a few things in the refrigerator. First, it absorbs all types of odors. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, we are constantly using our fridge to store food and sweets. Things can start to smell or clash in scents. The best thing to do is absorb the odors! Coffee grounds also smell great and autumnal, so it can add a little festive scent to your home.
Add Cinnamon Essential Oil to Trash Can
Cinnamon is such a wonderful smell this time of year. Perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas! One of my favorite things to do is add a few drops of cinnamon oil to my trash can before I put in a new liner. Every time you lift the lid, a wonderful scent pops out! A friend of mine stopped over the other day and threw something away, she said my kitchen smelled so amazing, like cinnamon. I told her it was from the oils. This is great for helping keep food odor away too. Don’t use anything expensive for this. I use this one and love it. All you need is about 10-15 drops!
Clean Garbage Disposal and Kitchen Sink
The sink and garbage disposal are one of the places in the home that can really start to smell. All the food particles collect and can permeate the whole kitchen. This is especially true during the holiday season with all the cooking and baking going on. The first thing I like to do is sanitize and clean the kitchen sink with this easy DIY. Next, turn your water on hot, let it run for awhile, add about 1/8 cup of concentrated dish soap and sprinkle baking soda down the drain, turn on the garbage disposal and let is run a few seconds. This cleans out anything left in the disposal, but also makes it smell so fresh! You can even add in some holiday essential oils to the garbage disposal after this for extra scent. I like to add in some drops of pinedrops of pine into the sink this time of year for a Christmasy smell!
Fill Your Diffuser with Cozy Oils
You can also add oils to your diffuser to fill the air with a subtle, yet autumnal scent. I like to add orange, cinnamon, and clove for a cozy mix, You can also buy a cozy oil combination like this one to add to your diffuser. I like how the smell is mild, not over powering.
Make A Pot of Autumn Room Spray
Our popular autumn room spray is a great option for keeping your home smelling amazing during the holidays. Just making the batch will make your home smell incredible! Turning it into the room spray is also a great way to get the sent all over.
Simmer Some Homemade Autumn Stove Top Potpourri
A different version is our stove top potpourri. This is meant to simmer all day, so if you plan on having company over, you can start a pot early in the day and keep it going until evening. This has the best apple cider smell!
Use Mrs. Meyers Apple Cider Cleaner
Speaking of apple cider, I have a new obsession. I make all my own cleaners, as you know, but I have a week spot for autumn scents. When I saw Mrs. Meyers released an Apple Cider cleaner, I had to check it out. This smells so heavenly! I have been spraying down my counters with it, and everyone who comes in asks what that wonderful apple scent is! This cleaner is perfect for the holidays. I found it at my local grocery store. I also mentioned their pumpkin scented one in this post.
Remove Bad Odors with Zeolite
If you have some pet odors or anything else that is leaving a musty scent in your house or a particular room, you can add zeolite rocks in bowls to absorb odors. I love to do this before guests come over especially where Ruger hangs out or in bathrooms. We have had readers write in, and they tell us these zeolite rocks have made a dramatic difference to the odors in their house. Smoke, pet smells, musty scents, or really anything lingering!
Make Christmas Sachets to Hang Around the House
You can use a combination of herbs or even use pine needles during the Christmas season. You can hang them in closets, kitchens, or entryways. Here is a DIY tutorial from the Noble Pig with some great scent combination ideas.
Hang Herbs in Bathrooms
You can use the same method above as the sachets, but without using a holder. Just hang herbs in your shower or bathroom area. The steam from the shower will release the aroma even more. You can also hang fresh evergreen for a wonderful Christmas scent!

I always just simmered, on the back of the stove, a small pan of water (2 cups) with some cinnamon (ground or sticks), a few whole cloves and a sprinkle of ground nutmeg. As the water evaporates, I just add another couple of cups of water. I can keep this going all day. These are spices I always have on hand. It’s also a good way to use up old spices and it’s cheaper than essential oils.

That’s what we do with the stovetop potpourri! So nice to use 🙂

Alexis,
By “coffee grounds”, you do mean brewed, left-over coffee grounds, right?

New, dry coffee grounds will absorb more odors. Left over ones can be used, but they need to be dried and they also won’t be as strong. But either one is okay 🙂
