Today on Chemistry Cachet, we are sharing with you many non-toxic ways to make your home smell good!
Over the last 10 years of running Chemistry Cachet, I have been testing natural, non-toxic methods to get a lovely smelling home. In fact, a clean, fresh smelling home is more than just aesthetically pleasing, it is actually important for your well-being based on science.
Non-Toxic Ways To Make Your Home Smell Good
A good-smelling home is more than just a pleasant aroma; it significantly impacts our well-being and overall quality of life. Firstly, scent directly influences our mood and emotions. Pleasant aromas, like citrus or lavender, can evoke feelings of happiness, relaxation, and reduce stress. On the contrary, unpleasant odors can trigger anxiety and even worsen existing conditions.
From personal experience, I have been in a place that smells badly and it makes me have terrible anxiety!
Also, a good-smelling home enhances social interactions. A welcoming scent creates a positive first impression on guests, making them feel more comfortable and relaxed. This contributes to a more enjoyable social experience and strengthens the bond between you and your visitors. A good-smelling home is an investment in our overall well-being, creating a more inviting, relaxing, and enjoyable living space.
While we need a good smelling home, we also want it to be non-toxic and healthy. The good news is there are dozens of natural and non-toxic things you can do for your home today to make it smell amazing.
Here are my top favorite tips! You can also view many of these ingredients and products in our amazon list.
Use Non-Toxic Room and Fabric Spray
Out of all the non-toxic air fresheners I have tried, this brand is the only one that has a good scent that actually lingers around the home. You can spray it on fabrics too. I keep a bottle in my bathroom, kitchen, and my bedroom. A few simple sprays and you have the most wonderful aroma.
Utilize Dried Lavender Leaves
I purchased this bag of dried lavender leaves for a skincare project, but I only used a small portion of it. So I wanted to find great ways to take advantage of this very lovely, relaxing scent. You can simply pour about 1/2 cup of dried lavender leaves in a bowl and set it in your bathroom, closet or bedroom. Anywhere you would like a relaxing scent. The scent will last for awhile depending on your climate. Keeping dried lavender in the bathroom can also continue to reactive in scent each time you shower. Hot water can release more fragrance.
You can also place the dried leaves in a satchel and hang them inside the shower area. I like to this during the holiday season with fresh herbs.
Other dried flower buds will work for this too, but lavender is one of the strongest and lasts longer.
Use Baking Soda and Chamomile Tea to Fight Odors
We share this super unique fridge deodorizer recipe a few months ago, and it was a big hit with readers! Why? Because it not only absorbs bad odors in your fridge, but also makes the inside of it smell even more fresh with the addition of chamomile tea. The chamomile further enhances the baking soda to make the coolest non-toxic smell good for your fridge. Get the recipe here.
Grab Some Zeolite Rocks To Place Throughout the Home
One of our most popular Chemistry Cachet tips is zeolite rocks. This original post we shared years ago went viral so many times, we sold out all the zeolite rocks on Amazon! Now they are hard to find, so I have been purchasing these. Zeolite rocks have a chemical structure that allows them to absorb bad odors in your home. It absorbs and holds the odor. You can recharge the rocks by place them in direct sunlight.
I highly recommend checking out this blog post we did to learn more chemistry on zeolite rocks. It is so fascinating how they work. They are completely natural and non-toxic too.
Use Purify Essential Oil In Your Diffuser
The purify essential oil is one of my favorites for making your home smell good! It is one of the ingredients in our DIY toilet bowl cleaner, but I also love it in my diffuser. It permeates the house, making it smell clean.
You can do many things with one bottle of purify essential oil. Use it in your diffuser, sprinkle it in the trash can, use it in homemade cleaners, or make a room spray using the recipe we shared for this one and replacing the pumpkin spice oil with the purify oil.
Keep Your Trash Can Clean
Many people don’t clean their trash cans clean, but this is a spot in your home that is constantly dirty and filled with bad odors. I make a citric acid trash can spray that not only eliminates the odors, but it keeps everything fresh.
Make sure you actually clean the trash can too. It needs to be wiped down every few weeks. The inside needs to be filled with warm water and dish soap every few weeks as well and rinsed out.
Don’t Forget To Clean Your Garbage Sink and Disposal Too
Along with the trash can, your sink and garbage disposal are some of the worst spots for odors. There is nothing worse than walking into someone’s home and immediately smelling a dirty garbage disposal. I’ve got you covered on how to keep it smelling fresh though!
First, clean your sink with our non-toxic sink scrub. This scrubs the sink and really makes it smell clean! Next, you can use our homemade garbage disposal cleaner which works so well. I also recommend this fantastic natural disposal cleaning pods. They smell so good and clean your disposal well. I actually use both my homemade recipe and this non-toxic store-bought ones every few weeks.
Make A Cheap And Simple Citrus Room Spray
This time of year, I love to use fresh lemons for things. I make an easy and very cheap citrus room spray. You can get the recipe here. It is fun to make and perfect for spring.
Get An Air Purifier
Lastly, one of the most important items you can purchase for your home is an air purifier. I bought this one for my parents about two years ago now. Their home is older, and it was starting to get a musty scent in certain areas. This air purifier cleaned up the smell and really enhanced the air in their home.
Air purifiers work by drawing in air, passing it through filters that trap pollutants like dust, pollen, and allergens, and then releasing cleaner air back into the room. These filters, often featuring HEPA technology, can capture particles as small as 0.3 microns, significantly improving indoor air quality.

You really should state in your articles whether or not the essential oils are safe around dogs and cats. Are they?
That’s not really my place to say. I have a dog and he is around all of these things safely. But a better option is to ask your personal vet about what’s safe for your pet. I’m not a veterinarian, but I safely use all of my tips around my animals.
