I am so excited to share these fun old-fashioned skin tips that actually work!

The last few months, I have been sharing some of these things on instagram stories, and so many of our readers have been asking for more! If you like tips like this, be sure to join us on instagram.

One of my favorite I Love Lucy episodes is called “Lucy Thinks Ricky is Trying to Murder Her” in season one. She is reading this murder mystery at night eating crackers and dip. She has a large jar of cold cream sitting out, and she accidentally dips the crackers into it at one point.

Cold cream was a huge part of skin care routines in the 50s. In fact, my grandmother is 89, and she still uses cold cream (and I do too!).

I love old movies and old TV shows, but I especially love seeing skincare and beauty tips in them. It is so different than what we do today.

Even though it is different than modern products, there are so many old-fashioned skin care tips that actually work! Many of them I use daily too 🙂

Old-Fashioned Skin Care Tips That Actually Work

Cold Cream

I will start with this one since I talked about it above. Cold cream is such an old-fashioned item, but it works! If you open up my bathroom drawer, you will always find a bottle of Pond’s cold cream. The reason I love it is due to how gentle it is on my skin, but how well it removes make up. It isn’t harsh and won’t dry out skin. This is an old-fashioned skin care tip that works!

Frownies

Have you heard of these little patches? I first saw these in the movie Sunset Boulevard. There is a scene where she is taking these patches off of her face. I was always curious what they were. They are called Frownies! They have actually been around since the 1880s. These little patches eliminate wrinkles by restricting the movements of the face that cause the wrinkled area like frowning. It works similar to Botox without an injection. And they work!

Rub Lemon on Your Elbows

I saw this in an old movie too! The character was always rubbing lemon on her elbows at night! Why? Lemon can help brighten discolored and dark elbows. The acidity in lemon is great for discoloration!  I never thought much about elbows, but mine can be pretty rough and dark sometimes from the sun. This little tip works great for that.

Use Bar Soap To Cleanse Your Skin

Back in the day, women used bar soap to cleanse their skin. Believe it or not, bar soap is more gentle and contains so many less chemicals than liquid soap. They used bar soap back then because it was widely available, but it actually is better for your skin. I keep a bar of soap in my shower, and cleanse my face with it every few days. It has been better for my face than liquid cleansers! Less drying and irritating. In the 1950s, Palmolive and Ivory Soap bars were very popular and gentle on the skin. I use this one! It is often out of stock, so another option is Kirk’s bar soap which is gentle and safe to use too.

eB5 Moisturizer

I learned about this little product from my Grammy who has used it for about 50 years.  She used to buy it in the department stores back in the day. Now, you can buy it online only, but it is worth it!  It has natural ingredients including “Oat Kernel Proteins, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin B5 and Allantoin from Comfrey Root” I am amazed how well it works. What a great invention from so many years ago!

Sunscreen

Women started protecting their skin from the sun centuries ago, but in the 30s, sunscreen was invented. They began to use this for skin protection, and it is one of the best skincare tips! It preserves your skin from so much sun damage which causes aging and wrinkles. I talked all about the sunscreen I use in this post.

Did you know sunscreen was invented in the late 1930s by an Austrian chemist?

Using Witch Hazel as Toner

Before fancy skin care products were invented, women used things they had around their home. Witch hazel was used as a toner. In fact, is it the only toner I use now because it works so well. I shared my favorite one in this post. It is a mild astringent, so it removes any excess dirt or makeup, shrinks pores, and balances the oils on your face.

Get Sleep!

Women talked about getting their “beauty rest” all the time. Hollywood Icons from the 40s and 50s, like Marilyn Monroe, always mentioned sleep as part of their important beauty secrets. My friends grandmother read the tip about beauty rest from Marilyn back in the day, and to this day, she tells all of her granddaughters to get their beauty sleep! Adequate sleep is so important for healthy skin. If I don’t get at least seven hours, my skin is dry and dull. When I was younger watching old movies, I remember the characters always focusing on beauty rest.

So, there you have my favorite old-fashioned skin care tips that work! I hope you can enjoy some of these new tips!

My mother always used cold cream on her face, then would tissue it off. Water never touched her face. She always had a creamy complexion, but when she was in her 50’s she had a face lift!! Cold cream could not stop the wrinkles!!

Cold cream is definitely smooth! It is one of the only makeup removers that doesn’t irritate my skin! But it definitely doesn’t have any anti-aging ingredients

Sometimes the “oldies” really are the goodies! My aunt from Taiwan always used Pond’s Cold cream for makeup removal and facials. I wash my face and body with bar soap (although Ivory is too drying.). SOme liquid soaps contain triclosan – a potentially harmful product. I did not realize sunscreen went that far back – I learned about in the 70s when going to Hawaii, but only used it daily in the last 15 years. I need more sleep! It’s so important for so many body and life functions! 7 hours seems to be my magic number. That is for a trip down memory lane. ?

My mom used Pond’s her whole life. Her mantra was Pond’s at night and washed her face in ice cold water every morning! She passed away at 87, but you have never guessed she was that old. She truly looked about 65.
I always think our ancestors knew more than these companies do today. Thanks for your article.

That’s awesome! My Grammy is the same way. She is almost 90, but still uses Ponds and eB5 every day!

I’m surprised you did not mention petroleum jelly. A wonderful moisturizer, non-comedogenic, safe and gentle on skin of all ages. You may want to do some investigation into the Interesting history of white mineral oil and petrolatum. Skin care has benefited greatly from these “old time” remedies.

Hi Jody! I didn’t mention it because I have never had success using it for anti-aging benefits. I try to only share tips I have used and saw results with 🙂 But mineral oil is one of the key ingredients in PONDS, and I really love it! It continues to be my go-to! I have tried many modern cleansing balms, but PONDS is still my favorite. I agree, these old time remedies are still the best and have changed our lives when it comes to skincare!

I also use Pond’s Cold Cream everyday and I love it! And a Witch Hazel Toner for me is a must. I have oily skin and it’s great for that!! I use the brand by Dickinson’s.
