Scientific Reasons to Use Geranium Oil
As always, we like to share the science with you first on Chemistry Cachet. Science is the reasons things work or don’t work! We like to share the truth about things, so you can know exactly why you are using something.
When it comes to essential oils from plants, you will see may of the same substances simply because they are plants. And looking at the chemical composition of geranium oil, there are dozens that make up the entire oil. Only a few matter when it comes to the ability to be used for health and skin.
The Chemistry of Geranium Oil
According to this article from the International Journal of Aromatherapy, the GC and GC-MS (these are instruments that determine the chemical compounds in a substance) showed five main components in geranium oil.
Here is the breakdown:
- Citronellol made up 33.6%
- Geraniol made up 26.8%
- Linalool made up 10.5%
- Citronellyl fromate made up 9.7%
- p-menthone made up 6%
Each one of these substances contains properties that can be used for a variety of things. A few benefits include anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidants, anti-anxiety, and more things along this line.
Now that we understand the science going on, we can dive into the benefits.
Geranium Oil Benefits
Geranium oil has been used for centuries! It dates back to biblical times as an aromatherapy and skincare substance. It has been proven to be helpful in many areas, but the ones we are sharing below are the best!
For Acne
Geranium oil is known to be an anti-bacterial and anti-microbial. This means, it can kill germs and bacteria that cause acne outbreaks on your skin. Not only can it kill bacteria, but it also helps balance the oil on your skin. This can help people with a heavy oil production, but also those with dry skin. It is great for all skin types.
For Hair
I have had readers asking me if geranium oil is good for hair? It is great for hair! There are a few things it can do. WebMD lists that geranium oil can strengthen hair. It is known to soften hair, but also stimulate hair growth. Overall it is fantastic for your hair follicles due to the antioxidant activity.
For Anti-aging
There are dozens of benefits for your skin from geranium essential oils. The antioxidant activity in the oil makes it great for fighting wrinkles. Since it is also a natural astringent, it will tighten your skin! Astringents also minimize pores and tone the skin. All of this works together to provide a fantastic anti-aging substance. This article from acanceresearch.com explains the antioxidant activity of geranium essential oil.
For Skin Inflammation
One of the biggest benefits of geranium oil is the anti-inflammatory impact. It can soothe inflamed skin minimizing redness, puffiness, and even promote healthy circulation. It also nourishes skin!
How to Use Geranium Oil
Now that we have mentioned all the benefits of geranium essential oil, we need to discuss how to actually use it!
The easiest thing to do is add 10-15 drops of geranium essential oil to your products. If you are using a hair mask, add in geranium oil to get the benefits for your hair. You can add it to your facial cleanser, face cream, toner, serums, or anything else. The possibilities are endless, and you can intensify all of your skincare products by adding geranium to them. It is so simple.
You can also create serums or oils with geranium oil. I love this DIY geranium oil face mask from Edens Garden.
I also love to make a DIY toner. Here is the recipe:
- 1/2 cup witch hazel
- 1/2 cup water
- 15 drops of geranium essential oil
Mix the ingredients in a jar, then apply with a cotton ball after cleansing your face. Not only does it remove the rest of your makeup, but it will also tighten your face and provide all those great anti-aging aspects. Plus, really good for those with acne.
Best Geranium Essential Oil
One of the questions I get the most from readers about essential oils is always about which brand is best. When it comes to creating a cleaning solution, like one from our eBook, brand isn’t as important. I like to use NOW brand for cleaning because it always works great in our homemade solutions and is easy to obtain.
When it comes to using something on your skin, you want to make sure to use pure essential oils. I prefer Plant Therapy brand for most of my skincare. I have used it compared to DoTerra and Young Living, it works just as good. Since it isn’t a “direct selling model” business like the others, you can purchase it right from Amazon.
As a chemist, I have researched and tested essential oils for so many years. I like Plant Therapy best.
If you need some more information about the difference in essential oil brands, I recommend reading this informative article from Better Mind Body Soul. If you have a brand you like, feel free to use it. As long as you have researched their method of distilling, growing, and obtaining, and you know it is pure, then you will get the same impact for your skin.
What Type of Geranium Oil?
For all of these benefits in this post, keep in mind we are using a Rose Geranium Oil. The essential oil bottle will be labeled Egyptian geranium oil.
How to Make Geranium Oil
If you want to try something fun, you can actually make a geranium oil through infusion methods!
Remember this popular post on a DIY Caffeinated oil for skin? You can see the video here. This method used infusion to get the caffeine from the coffee into the oil. You can use a similar method for making a geranium oil.
Here is how to do it:
- Gather some rose geranium flowers, leaves, and stems.
- Chop up the leaves and stems, then slightly chop the flowers.
- Add these ingredients to a glass jar, fill up about halfway.
- Cover all the pieces with olive oil, then secure the lid.
- Allow to infuse for 7-10 days.
- Strain the oil with a cheese cloth, lightly pressing down on the leaves, stems, and flowers to get everything out.
- Store in an amber bottle for 6 months and use when you would like.
Keep in mind, this homemade version will not be concentrated, nor an exact essential oil. It will still have many of the benefits though!
Is geranium oil safe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding?
Even though essential oils are natural, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are safe. Pregnant and nursing mothers have to keep and eye out for things. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy says geranium is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when diluted properly.
Other Safety Tips
For the most part, geranium essential oils are safe. Plant Therapy recommends diluting to 2-4% before use on the skin, so just remember that! Again, you can add drops to your skincare which will makes sure you get just the right amount.
Now you know everything possible about using geranium essential oil for all types of fantastic skincare. It is so simple to buy and use, but you can even enjoy making an easy DIY version. Either way, you can get some great benefits at home.
