The humidity of summer simmers down low, and the eye of the sun looks toward the coming fall. The nights grow longer, and the leaves turn golden and scarlet with the oncoming season.
The minds shift to simpler times, and of course, you want to decorate your home with those rustic touches perfect for the season:
1. Paint an Accent Wall an Autumn Color
Do you have a southern or western facing window? Doesn’t the most radiant and beautiful light melt across the walls like butter?
Embrace the beautiful colors of the season by painting an accent wall a shade of autumn red or buttery, golden yellow. The best wall will be one the sun passes over, typically southern or western facing, and you can use a shelf to grow indoor herbs to increase that rustic feel.
2. Create Dried Flower Arrangements
Autumn brings up associations of change. Summer blooms fade and decay, but that’s not a bad thing. Those blooms and falling leaves provide nutrients for the soil and teach an important lesson about living a well-lived life.
Floral arrangements are vibrant displays of beauty in spring and summer, but most people turn to evergreens or plastic flower arrangements as the season shifts to colder days. Why not embrace the beauty of the changing season, and create a dried flower arrangement for your kitchen counter, dining room table or bed side table?
As the petals fold back from a flower, sometimes the seeds are beautifully exposed, creating a whole other unique appearance. You can air dry bouquets, but flowers like daisies may be dried in the microwave successfully for quick arrangements. Begin saving your favorite blooms and dried greenery now, and place the stems into a mason jar as you collect them.
3. Woven Patio Furniture + Accessories
Woven textiles automatically add a rustic touch to outdoor and indoor spaces. Purchase woven patio furniture, such as wicker, for your sunroom or outdoor patio. Use woven rugs across your home. Hang woven baskets on the wall over your couch.
Place the woven baskets in the kitchen pantry to take down when you go shopping at the farmer’s market. Place fruits and bread in your favorite baskets for easy access and a down home display.
4. Brass Showcases Rustic Class
Is brass ever out? In the past few years, copper has been virtually in every home decor catalog you pick up. Brass is classic and rustic, and whether it is worn or polished up, brass adds that something to make your house feel like home.
Brass fixtures are beautiful, but choose a brass bed if you’re looking to invest in a durable antique and to make a simple statement. Shining up a brass bed is easy: use baking soda and a sponge or steel wool and mineral spirits to make it new again. Be gentle!
5. Quilts + Mismatched Pillows
Display cozy quilts and mismatched pillows across your outdoor and indoor furniture. Quilts are automatic comfort items for self-care at home, and mismatched pillows add a quirky and personalized vibe to your space.
Quilts and mismatched pillows don’t have to be shabbier than chic when it comes to decoration. Focus on complementary colors. Blend whites, off whites and creams with various types of textiles, such as linen and lace.
6. Up Your Curb Appeal with a Rustic Door
Want to make your home feel more welcome to others? Replacing your front door will instantly give your home a welcoming vibe and up its curb appeal. A front door replacement will also increase your home’s security if your old door is outdated and damaged.
Choose a warm, natural wood like cherry to get that rustic feel, but reclaimed wood is also an excellent, green choice. A strong wood door will keep your home warm when winter comes.
Imagine sipping your morning coffee wrapped in quilts sitting on your wicker furniture, after waking up well-rested from your antique brass bed. After a long day at work, you’ll return home and see that cherry wood entry door, instantly registering the fact that you’re finally home, free to relax and watch the sun set on that beautiful accent wall as you eat a sumptuous dinner.
As autumn approaches, a chill enters the air, and your urge is to bundle up in your cozy home. Rustic home decor touches will make your house feel more like home and be welcoming to guests.

I love fall! The mildly warm days drifting into cool nights, putting on sweaters, blankets, robes. Coziness. I will miss my garden and flowers are they settle in/pass on during cooler weather. Oh, the colors of fall foliage – not to much in my area though, but further north…
