Brownies are by far my husband’s favorite chocolate treat! He could probably eat an entire pan all by himself! And he can get away with it too since he is so physically fit and active…
I have been experimenting with so many dairy-free sweats for him since dairy is the one thing he can’t eat due to his health. I perfected the dairy-free pumpkin pie which I was excited about! And now, I have perfected his next favorite treat, brownies.
If you have a dairy sensitivity, you will LOVE these dairy-free dutch brownies. Even if you can have dairy, you will still LOVE these because they are that good! I am not even a fan of sweets and I couldn’t help, but have some of these.
The nuts are optional too! The other great thing is these brownies have very few ingredients without anything weird going on in them.
A trend I have noticed looking up recipes for dairy-free things, is the strange or HUGE ingredient list that seems to go hand in hand when you eliminate dairy. The minute I see that on a recipe, I immediately exit it. I love sharing easy substitute recipes that are still delicious with normal ingredients AND that are super easy, this one fits the bill for that.
Dairy-free Dutch Brownies (with walnuts)
- 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour (you can even try gluten-free AP flour here)
- 1/3 cup DUTCH-processed cocoa (read about that here)
- 1 cup of sugar (granulated)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (melted)
- 1/2 cup water (or almond milk)
- 1/2 tsp butter extract
- 1/2 cup walnuts (OPTIONAL)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray an 8×8 pan with non stick spray.
Mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl until incorporated. Add in the oil, water (or almond milk), and extract. Mix JUST until combined, then sprinkle in the walnuts and stir a few times.
Add to your pan and bake about 18-20 minutes, but make sure not to overcook!
I love how crackly the top gets when it is done. These smell so heavenly baking away in the oven, your family will love it!

If you want a less calorie, less sugar brownie, make sure to try out my favorite raspberry oat brownies. They are one of the bests as well!

I love that these are dairy free! Although I’m not a huge fan of walnuts… I know, I know. But definitely going to have to give these a try! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

I’m not either, so you can totally leave them out! Or even use pecans if you like! You will really love these!

Oh boy… watch out… here I come for you, brownies! I’d like to start cooking with coconut oil – I see it a lot in your recipes, and I like coconut (but not the sweetened bagged stuff). The coconut oil replaces the butter or oil that is usually used? What would be the taste difference if I used vegetable oil or butter instead of coconut oil? I’m not sure hubby would eat these if I made with coconut oil. What are the health benefits of coconut – I know it is high in sat fat.
Alexis says
I love all these questions Laurie! I am doing a post soon on coconut oil so stay tuned for that 🙂 The taste is the exact same with any cooking oil. I use coconut oil because it is healthier than vegetable oil, but it bakes equally and has no flavor. My husband has no idea when I use either, so I always swap out when I can. It is very high in saturated fat, but it is the good kind. It has so many great benefits for our heart, inflammation, etc. I will have some stuff coming soon for all that. But you can definitely use veggie oil. Butter could be used, but the texture would be different! 🙂

Thanks for a recipe that doesn’t include a mile long list. That is the frustrating part about trying to eat dairy free. Certainly going to try this (with the nuts).
Alexis says
I know, so many recipes without dairy go into some crazy ingredients! Some you can’t even find in the store! I hope you get to make this, it is so good!

These look heavenly! Do you think I could substitute butter-flavored olive oil for the coconut oil and butter extract or do you really need that extract to enhance the chocolate-y flavors?
Alexis says
That oil would probably work just fine, although the taste may not be as rich as it is with coconut oil. You can definitely switch the extracts out! It will taste slightly different, but just as good! I love butter extracts for baked goods!

This os one delicious looking recipe, like you say if you like non-dairy or not, this is good.
