Today we are sharing with you the best little golden books for kids, even toddlers!
As Amelia gets older, she enjoys books more and more. She goes through stages were she wants to read the same book over and over (and over and over) again! My parents kept all of my favorite books form when I was little, and I now have them on Amelia’s book shelf.
Something that sparks nostalgia for me, is reading the books I loved when I was young. I had an entire collection of Little Golden Books, some were even my Dad’s when he was little.
I really love these books, they are so sweet and simple. I love the vintage feel to them, but also the stories. On instagram the other day, I asked if anyone read these books as kids? Almost everyone said yes!!
Every time I read these books, I’m instantly transported back to age 3 or 4 sitting in my room with all my stuffed animals, baby dolls, and barbies, reading these books!
Anyways, I could go on all day about the memories these books have for me, but I will go ahead and share with you the best Little Golden Books for kids. Toddlers can enjoy these too, just make sure you read them to younger kids 🙂
The Best Little Golden Books For Kids (Toddlers too!)
Every evening, Amelia pulls out here books so we can can read before bedtime. We pull out ALL the books too! She loves to go back and forth from one book to another. Sometimes, she just looks through pictures while I read out loud.
My favorites are all of our Little Golden Books from my childhood. I got to thinking the other day, do kids even read Little Golden Books anymore? Are they available in the stores?
I didn’t see any in my store, so I went to Amazon of course. They have them all!
I bought Amelia some for her birthday, and already have more in the cart for Christmas!
Here are our favorite Little Golden Books:
The Night Before Christmas
Okay, it is May, but this is hands down the best Little Golden Book. My parents have my Dad’s old copy he read in the 50s as a little boy. He read this book to us EVERY single Christmas Eve. This book holds so much love and so many memories for me. I just recently bought a copy for Amelia so we can continue the tradition with her.
If you buy one of these books, I recommend this one. It has the same illustrations it did from the 40s.
The Little Red Hen
This is another classic! We have the same one my Dad grew up with. This is a sweet story and book for kids.
The Whispering Rabbit
I always loved this book. It is a great story and easy to read for to kids. Amelia enjoys the bunny rabbit or “bunnee” as she calls it!
The Three Bears
Always a favorite of mine as a kid, I love the Little Golden Book version. It has the same pictures and look as it did in 1948 when it was published, so it is very vintage. Amelia is just one now, but she loves looking at bears!
The Fuzzy Duckling
Another book from this era is the Fuzzy Duckling. This is a sweet book with farm animals, easy to read, but also helps kids count.
Daddies
Written in the 1950s, this Little Golden Book is so charming and sweet! A great book for kids about Daddies. This book is just heat warming to read and very easy to look at the pictures.
A Day At The Seashore
I didn’t grow up with this book, but I bought it for Amelia for her birthday. A Day at the Seashore was also written in the 50s, so it has all the nostalgia. Amelia even likes to look at the pictures!
The Saggy Baggy Elephant
A true Little Gold Book classic written in the 40s! This is a little more advanced in the wording and story line, but great for kids to enjoy!
Wonders of Nature
Such a sweet Little Golden Book from the 50s (the 40s and 50s had the best Little Golden Books!!). This book is a great way to get your little one interested in nature, but it is also educational. I love the poem too. Children have so much curiosity about nature. Amelia loves going outside and pointing to things like trees or bugs!
The Tortoise and the Hare
I loved this book as a child, and it has such a great message for kids too. Unfortunately, you can only buy it used for a reasonable price on Amazon here. You can get a similar version with the Reading Rainbow book, but it isn’t as good in my opinion.
The Poky Little Puppy
This book is such a classic! I loved it as a kid, and I remember my brother loved it too. Amelia LOVES puppies and dogs, so she really enjoys any book with dogs in it. I know she will enjoy it even more as she gets older.
101 Dalmatians
Little Golden Books have all the Disney movies in book form too. I have all the ones that were popular when I was a kid like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, but I got the 101 Dalmatians for Amelia because she really enjoyed the movie. If you watch my instagram stories, then you saw her watching it for the first time! She jumped up and down, yelled PUP and RUFF RUFF, while holding her stuffed puppy. It was so sweet! She loves the book too.
Boxed Sets
I have given so many of my friends some of these boxed sets for their children’s birthdays. They are also a good gift for a shower. These are my favorite sets:
Board Book Options
These are the best Little Golden Books for Kids, but you can also find many of these in board book options which is great for toddlers! If you click on many of the links I have above, they have board book options too!
I hope this list brought make memories for you or inspires you to get your kids some of these special books! I had fun writing this and picking out our favorites. Amelia loves reading and loves books even at one year old, so I love getting to share books with her I loved as a kid too 🙂

Oh my. What a trip down memory lane. And the memories of you reading your father’s books – that’s so special! I love that Amelia loves books too!
I didn’t read many of these books as a child… I was first born to parents from China so I don’t recall if they bought these types of books for me. I remember them more for my siblings and as we became more “Americanized” and were in school. Now I want to go to the library and plunk down and read them!
