These are the BEST oatmeal raisin cookies you will ever make at home! I have tried dozens of oatmeal raisin cookie recipes, but this base is always a fan favorite. I have added in some of my own touches to make them a little more special and fun! I also wanted to add in some of my chemist tips for baking these to perfection.
How you actually bake it, is the most important step to a cookie. People buy cookies from me all the time and they always say that my cookies have the best texture and flavor. The texture is purely how you bake it:) So, today I am going to give a little bit of a sneak peak into my baking tips.
This recipe is very similar to the ones I sale to customers and they love it!
The Best Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
I recently shared this recipe on Instagram, and many were asking for the recipe! These are easy to make, and they will turn out soft and chewy.
- 3 cups old-fashioned oats
- 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp fine salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp maple extract (this makes it awesome!)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 stick butter, slightly softened
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 cup dry cranberries
- 1/2 finely chopped pecans (optional)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Measure out dry ingredients in a small bowl, combine well and set aside.
- In a larger bowl (or mixer), cream the butter and sugars together until smooth. Add in your extract and combine.
- Next, add in one egg at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Slowly add in your dry mixture. Mix until JUST combined, don't over mix.
- Add in your raisins, cranberries, and pecans by hand.
- With a small cookie scoop, add to a baking sheet and bake 8-10 minutes.
- Cool completely on wire rack! Make sure to read my notes on baking!
Chemist Tips for Making These Oatmeal Raisin Cookies Turn Out Great
- Adding maple extract gives these cookies a more rich flavor and it combines with nutmeg perfectly!
- Take the cookies out when they edges are golden brown, but the center is still soft! Under baking these will make them more soft & chewy. They will harden up as they cool!
- Use butter that is just a little softened. If it is completely room temperature, these cookies will flatten too much!
- Update: MUST READ TIPS FOR THE PERFECT COOKIE!!!
I highly recommend getting some of these air bake cookie sheets also! I don’t use anything else for cookies anymore. They keep the bottom from burning and they also help the cookie cook evenly. Since it is an air bake sheet, add another 30 seconds to a minute onto your cook time 🙂
My family loves these the best, they are seriously the BEST Oatmeal Raisin Cookies because the flavor is so rich. Perfect for this time of year!
So, I would love to know…What is your favorite cookie?

Mmmm… Cookies! C is for Cookie… These look good – I know my hubby would enjoy them (I don’t care for raisins). If I omit the raisins, how much dried cranberries should I use – would 2 cups be too much? Can I substitute maple syrup for the maple extract… Great tip about not letting the butter soften too much – never thought about that. Does that run along the same lines as chilling the dough prior to baking to let the butter firm up again?
As for my fave cookies… shortbread and peanut butter… it’s a toss up between these.
Alexis says
You can just omit the raisins all together. You can keep it at 1 cup of cranberries, or definitely bump it up to 2!
I wouldn’t substitute maple syrup, it won’t be a strong enough flavor and will add too much moisture! You can definitely substitute for vanilla extract. It is very similar to chilly the dough so it can firm up, but I like this method best to create the perfect temperature 🙂
I think shortbread is the perfect cookie for tea and coffee! One of my favs too!!!

Love the added info on the chewy part. That is the way I like my cookies. Chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin are my favorites. It is so funny how the same recipe can turn out so differently. We did cookies one year for a Christmas party at school. We passed out the same recipes to all the parents and the results were interesting. Snickerdoodles were flat, some looked like pancakes…others were snickerdoodles. It was probably all the chemistry in the cream of tartar…lol
What causes sugar cookies to become brick hard? After making them I almost have to put them in the microwave to warm them before we can eat them?
Alexis says
I like them chewy too!! So much better! Isn’t that interesting how everyone’s cookies can turn out so different due to the technique they use?? There are a few reasons sugar cookies can get hard. Usually, just the regular oxidation from the oxygen in the air will cause the moisture to be pulled out of them completely. Since they don’t have as much moisture in them like a regular cookie that contains brown sugar, it happens more often. Also, if you bake the cookies for too long initially, they will have less moisture which will allow them to dry out quicker. I store my sugar cookies plastic wrap and then in an air tight container to keep them from getting hard, especially during Christmas. I actually have a post coming up soon for Christmas baking that you may enjoy! It will be out shortly after Thanksgiving 🙂

Thank you so much. I will look forward to that post!!!!!
