Deodorize A Musty Cabinet or Small Area with Coffee Grounds
You can use fresh coffee grounds or used coffee grounds for this. I recently did this little trick for my small front closet that had a musty smell from winter clothes, the vacuum, and other things. Add grounds to a bowl, and place in the back of the area. Coffee grounds work to neutralize odors.
This is best in a small space like a tiny closet, drawer or cabinet that has an old smell to it.
Plus, it’s basically free or just a few scents!
Clean Drains with Boiling Water and Dish Soap
I do this regularly, but it is a great tip (and only a few pennies) for spring cleaning. I learned this from my plumber years ago for maintaining our lift station and protecting it from grease and buildup. Boil a large pot on the stove with boiling water and add about 1/2 cup of dish soap. When it is at a rapid boil, pour slowly down the drain while hot water is also running. Allow hot water to run for a little while longer until all the bubbles are gone.
This not only freshens sinks, but it also cleans drains well. I do this to my garbage disposal too and allow the disposal to run while running the boiling soap water through it.
Freshen All Rugs and Carpets
I just finished doing this to my entire house because the carpets always seem to be the dirtiest thing after winter.
I use this 3 ingredient carpet cleaner with just the baking soda and vinegar. Then I lightly scrub it with a scrub brush. Allow it to dry, then vacuum. The carpets not only look brighter, but they are all fluffy and clean.
For the bedrooms, I just use my 2 ingredient carpet powder to freshen them. They don’t get as dirty, so this is perfect.
Clean Patio Furniture with Water, Soap, and Lemon
It is officially time to get the patio furniture ready too. My favorite thing to do is get a big bowl of hot water, add a few tablespoons of dish soap, then squeeze fresh lemon juice into it. I take a rag and clean all the patio furniture off with the mixture. Then, you can spray it with a rubber hose or wipe it clean.
Clean Baseboards with Used Dryer Sheets
I use dryer sheets for many things. In fact, I keep a little box in the laundry room for used dryer sheets. They are perfect for dusting! I love to clean baseboards with some lemon infused rubbing alcohol and used dryer sheets. It gets rid of dust, grim, and pet hair.
Use Lemons To Freshen Up Your Rooms
You can make our homemade citrus room spray, and also place a lemon peel in your dishwasher when it is running. The hot water will release the great scent of lemon. Another lemon tip is to use our DIY microwave cleaner with lemon in it. So cheap and easy!
Shake Out Rugs and Freshen Outside
Another free cleaning tip I love to do in the spring, is take out all my bathroom rugs and smaller rugs around the house. I will shake them really well, then hang them over the fence during the day to get fresh air.
If they are really dirty, I will pop them into the washing machine, but usually just shaking outside works. I will also follow up with this carpet cleaner and do a light scrub. Nothing makes my home feel cleaner than freshened rugs!
Clean Throw Pillows
I did a tutorial on this a few months back on Instagram stories. I like to use this all-purpose everything cleaner from the eBook to spray on my throw pillows. It gets rid of stains and cleans them well. After I spray and rub them down with this cleaner, I pop them into the dryer until they are no longer damp. They get so fluffy!
If you don’t own the eBook. Just use some hot soapy water to clean throw pillows and throw into dryer.
Another thing that gets overlooked all the time is throw pillows, but when they are clean, it makes everything look more put together.
Use Rubbing Alcohol for Electronics, Remotes, and More
I clean my electronics often, but there are some that get overlooked during the winter. Remote controls are always dirty. I use rubbing alcohol to clean everything like this. It dries quickly, disinfects, and removes dust. I also pair it with microfiber clothes!
I do this to my lap top, tablet, phone, cords, controls, tv screen, computer, and anything that has constantly been touched. Read more about cleaning with rubbing alcohol here for some ideas!
Clean Outdoor Windows
After a long winter, outdoor windows need cleaning! I like to use this homemade window cleaner from tea to clean the outside windows. To make it easy, spray windows down with a power wash first. Let it dry for a little bit, then follow up with this tea solution, rub with a paper towel. This works great for getting all that wintry dirt and dust off. Plus, it is CHEAP! You can do all the windows around your home for a few cents!

I read your advice about using hydrogen peroxide and water…. let me tell you this has been a life saver for me. I use 1/2 HP and 1/2 water in a spray bottle. I have 4 dogs and 4 cats…they all love to pee on two places in my house. Even though I put pee pads down somehow they seem to go around them and pee on the carpet. I was desperate. I figured what do I have to loose? I put a cup of HP in my carpet cleaner and water…. it not only takes up the stains, but the smell is practically gone. I spray this HP and water solution on my glass tables and shine away. Thank you so much for your brains….

You mentioned using dryer sheets for dusting baseboards and saving them for other uses.
Lately I’ve seen write-ups on the horrific chemicals they contain and we should absolutely never use them. do you make your own?
Thanks for all your input.

I’ve actually got a post coming up soon about my favorite dryer sheets and laundry ball options. Mrs. Meyers and seventh generation make a hypo allergenic one. I’ve also used Bounces hypoallergenic option which is pretty good and not much more expensive

Hi Sandy! I also have ceramic tile floors. I have use Murphys oil soap for cleaning and shining. It works great for floors. I do know that ceramic tiles will get worn overtime and the coating will eventually wear off. We had ours reglazed, and it made them look so much better. I found out after we bought our home that they need that every so often. A few years ago, we also have a professional steam cleaner come in and they got the floors looking perfect with their high powered steamer compared to my home one
