Today we are rounding up the best toilet cleaning hacks for you!
One of my favorite things to do is spend time testing out all types of methods for cleaning a particular surface to see what works best, what works fastest, and create a post for you sharing everything so you can clean better too!
I get asked about cleaning toilets all the time, so here is a great article for you with the best tips.
The Best Toilet Cleaning Hacks
A popular question from readers anytime I share a new cleaning post is what are some tricks for toilet cleaning? This is one of those cleaning tasks that is important, but also frustrating because it can be hard to get a toilet sparkling clean when it has hard water stains in hard to reach places.
When we first moved into our house last year, the previous owners didn’t do much cleaning, so hard water stains were everywhere in the bathroom and kitchen. The toilets had so much hardware buildup around the rim jets, it took me awhile to get it clean.
Here are the things that helped the most:
Make Our DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner
The best hack for toilets is making this DIY toilet cleaner. This went viral so many times last year because it works SO well. I buy store-bought cleaners to try, but this one continues to clean the best. It is the perfect combination of ingredients for cleaning and deodorizing.
Use a Handheld Pumice Stone Wand
If you have stubborn hard water stains in hard to reach places, this pumice wand is the BEST! I bought this to get hard water stains at the bottom of the toilet. It works great, Pumice stones are great for this type of surface.
Clean The Rim Jets With An Old Toothbrush
The rim jets are hard to clean with a regular toilet brush, so use old toothbrushes to get inside there. Spray vinegar onto the jets and let it sit for 5-10 minutes . Then scrub with the toothbrush. You can throw the toothbrush away or keep it specifically for toilet cleaning.
Or Use An Electric Grout Scrubber
Electric grout scrubbers are the perfect size and fit for those rim jets! This makes it really easy. Follow the same steps above by spraying vinegar and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub with this brush. By the way, you can soak this scrubber head in hydrogen peroxide for 10 minutes to disinfect, then rinse. This is a good idea to do for any tool used to clean the toilet.
Spray the Rim Jets With Our Two Ingredient Cleaner
You can spray the rim jets with vinegar like we mentioned above which works great if you can let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Alternatively, you can use this DIY two ingredient cleaner. I have tried all different products to spray inside the rim jets, both homemade and store-bought. This two ingredient mold remover with tea tree oil actually worked very well. If you spray it on the rim jets, the hard water breaks up very quickly. Then you can use the old tooth brush or electric scrubber to get the rest of it off.
Make DIY Toilet Cleaning Bombs
I love the addition of toilet cleaning bombs! These DIY cleaning bombs only need a few ingredients, but they clean so well and help combat odors too.
Disinfect with our DIY Lysol Cleaner
Properly disinfecting your toilet once a month or as needed is really important. Remember, cleaning products don’t disinfect unless you use them properly. I love our DIY lysol spray for this. It is hydrogen peroxide based, so it is very safe and easy to use.
Spray the entire toilet and allow it to sit on the surface for 10 minutes (10 minutes is the standard time for disinfecting to happen). You can also pour about 1/2 cup of peroxide into the toilet bowl and let it sit 10 minutes before flushing. Once the 10 minutes are up, you can wipe the outside, then flush the bowl. You should also disinfect your toilet brush with this too. Spray hydrogen peroxide onto the toilet brush then let it dry by resting inside the toilet rim.
You Can Also Use Force of Nature
Force of Nature (use code CC40 for 40% off) is the best, safest store-bought disinfectant. Use it the same way we mentioned above, and it will disinfect and remove odors too. I always keep this on hand for bathroom surface disinfecting or for children’s toys and surfaces.
Unclog a Toilet with Dawn and Hot Water
I have used this method several times for toilets and drains. It works better than anything else we have tried.
Here is how to do it:
- Add in a tbsp or so of Dawn into your toilet.
- Heat up a gallon of water on the stove or in the microwave. The water needs to be very hot, but not quite boiling.
- Slowly add the hot water into the toilet and allow it to sit and work for 10 minutes.
- Flush toilet normally.
This is a good maintenance idea too. We use this method in our shower and sink drains, it works for many slow drains and clogs.
Keep Zeolite Rocks On the Counter For Odors
My secret weapon for absorbing odors is zeolite rocks! You can place a bowl of zeolite rocks in small areas like bathrooms to absorb bad odors. Learn more about how they work in this post.
Spray Grow Fragrance Around the Toilet
I absolutely love Grow Fragrance sprays. These plant-based fragrances are so fresh. I just bought the tea collection hibiscus and matcha green tea spray. Everyone who walks into our bathroom mentions how wonderful it smells, this is what I have been using this summer. It does great in small areas like this bathroom and around the toilet.
Other Handy Toilet Cleaning Products
These eco-friendly toilet bowl cleaning tablets are a great addition for cleaning! I have had about ten readers mention these to me! They use sodium bicarbonate and citric acid to get the fizziness. It makes a good non-toxic cleaning option for your toilet. If you are looking for a toilet brush that also has an option to get under the rim jets, this one by OXO is very sturdy and is built to also clean under the rim jets!
Keep a Cleaning Schedule
When it comes to toilet maintenance, keeping a regular cleaning schedule is key to making cleaning easier. I clean our toilet bowls every two days, then I disinfect it once per month. When you clean more often, it will keep hard water stains from forming and make cleaning faster and more simple.
Once you get your toilet clean and get all the hard water stains out, regular maintenance is all you need to keep it that way!

Will the pumice stone scratch the porcelain toilets?
Alexis says
No, it doesn’t scratch. It can actually help with surfaces scratches! This pumice stone is a softer texture, it wears away as you use it. It will last for many uses, but eventually needs to be replaced. It comes in a pack of two, so it does last several years depending on how often you need to clean hard water

Thank you for answering my question!

Pumice might not scratch if kept continually wet, on surfaces like white hard fired porcelain. Do not use pumice (or any abrasive, no matter how mild) on special finishes like Toto’s Sanigloss. Anything abrasive WILL scratch and scratches hold the minerals even more. And pumice might damage colored toilets.
More time and labor intensive but safer option is to soften the hard water deposits acid treatments until they can be scrubbed away with a non-scratch scrubber. After they have been removed, weekly squirt of dawn and a good brush will keep them clean and mineral stain free.
Alexis says
Yes, this is why we recommend the DIY toilet bowl cleaner which combine acids and Dawn. As well as the other DIY cleaners in this post which work for hard water.
