For the last several years, I have been using a little device called a TRX. Today, we are going to talk a little about why you should use a TRX for exercising with bad knees.

I used a TRX all through knee surgery recovery, but we also have them at my Pilates studio, The Fit Lounge.

Not only is the TRX a GREAT workout in many ways, but it is also a really great option for those of us with bad knees.

What is a TRX machine?

TRX stands for Total body Resistance Exercise. The TRX machine is a device that hangs from the ceiling, top of exercise machines, or even from a doorway if you are using a home exercise TRX. It utilizes suspension and gravity to workout.

By using your body weight and gravity, you can modify common exercises to be more useful and easier on weight bearing joints. This is what makes it perfect for anyone suffering with knee issues.

Benefits of Using a TRX

There are many benefits to using a TRX, but I think one of the best ones is how it can be used for many people at all fitness levels. From beginners to highly conditioned athletes.

It is also low impact, so you can use this machine with bad joints and still get a safe workout in.

According to WebMD, TRX exercises are also great for flexibility, balance, core, arms, legs, and even back strengthening. At the Fit Lounge, we do all types of interesting moves on the TRX. They have an entire class dedicated to using it (Look for the Flex class on the schedule if you want to try it out), and wow! What a workout. I am always sore the next day. At the same time, it allows me to do moves my knee doesn’t do well with my body weight.

Common Exercise Moves To Try With TRX:

I did all of these in PT just a few months out of surgery, and I was so impressed with how much easier this machine made them. Here are moves I love doing on the TRX I still struggle with.

  • Lunges
  • Squats
  • Sumo Squats
  • Push Ups
  • Leg Extensions

Where Can You Buy or Find a TRX?

Like I said above, my fantastic Pilates studio has them at each reformer, so I get to use it there. If you go to a gym, they probably have one hanging up near the arm machines.

You can also purchase one for your home! They hang from a doorway, so it is safe to use. You can also move it around and put it outside. There are many possibilities!

TRX Exercise Video For Beginners:

I found this video and thought it was a great option to watch and try out if you are beginner. It explains how the TRX should hang and be positioned for safe movements too.

TRX Stretching Video:

I browsed through a bunch of videos on youtube that utilize stretching with the TRX, and I really like this one. I have done almost all of these moves, and it is amazing how well the TRX helps you do this. Even with bad knees, you can still get into many of these positions with the help of this machine.

I really love how you can buy one for the home, and move it around. If the weather is nice, you can do it outside too.

Out of all the things I have done during knee surgery recovery, the TRX is one of my favorite machines.

I know many of our readers struggle with knee issues like me, so I had to share this with you!

I hope it can give you a good exercises option.
