Friday Favorites - Vacationing in Galveston Island, TX

Our vacation in Galveston, Texas was really neat, and a great little getaway.

I grew up going to Corpus Christi every summer with my family, so this was my first time to visit Galveston. The beaches were really clean, pretty, and everything was accessible. Depending on where you stay, you can walk to almost anything.

Something I loved about visiting Galveston was all the history the city encompasses. It has some really neat stories and so many historical sites to see!

Today, I just want to share you with some things we did while we were there including where we stayed! Be sure to head over to our instagram for all of our summer adventures this year!

Also, you can see more summer inspiration on our summer tab!

Where to Stay when you visit Galveston:

Hotel Galvez

I researched for weeks what hotel would be best to stay at for us. Location is a big one when we take a vacation because I like to walk to as many things as I can. I also want a nice pool with a pretty view. This hotel had all of that! You can see more views on my instagram from a few weeks ago.

Also, they have a wide variety of prices for hotel rooms, but most of them are affordable compared to other hotels on Seawall Blvd.

This place also has some pretty amazing history attached to it which is a big plus for me! One day, my husband and I just walked all around the hotel checking out all the nooks and crannies. It also had a beautiful lobby and restaurant inside.

They also have a really nice spa which I didn’t get to take advantage of this time, but it had some neat packages to choose from.

We walked to the pier from the hotel and it is a short walk across the street to the beach. The hotel is also next to many good restaurants, so it is really convenient.

Where to Eat

Miller’s Seawall

Miller’s was our favorite place to eat. It had great food, and so many options. I posted a picture on Instagram of my red snapper, and it was my favorite meal! They also had an all day breakfast which we had too. It was so close to the hotel, so we ate there twice. The prices were really fair on the seafood compared to some other places we tried.

I highly recommend going here!

Fish Tales

This place is a little pricier, but it has a great view. The food was good too! My husband’s steak was really good. I had the tuna which was also delicious! If you enjoy seafood, they have a wide variety of options.

There are many options to eat along Seawall Blvd like Denny’s (our favorite!), Salt Grass, Joe’s Crab Shack, and Golden Corral. All of these are also good options.

Things to See

Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier

Since we stayed at the Hotel Galvez, we had a great view of this awesome pier carnival. One of my favorite sites to see is a summer carnival all lit up at night. It is so old-fashioned and nostalgic of summers long ago. This pier has a really neat history you can read about here.

There are numerous things to do on the pier. The amusement park is great for families, but there are also places to eat like Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

61st Street Fishing Pier

Where to Stay, what to see, where to eat when you visit galveston, texas

If you love to fish, this is a fun place to go! Not only is it a great spot to go fishing, but watching the sunrise over the water is beautiful! They also have fresh coffee, so that’s a plus 🙂

You can rent poles and bait, so really all you need to bring is a fishing license, a bucket, and some pliers to get hooks out.

We got there around 4:00am to fish, but the day starts over at 6:00am. So, if you don’t want to pay twice, go there at 6:00am. It is $10 to get on the pier, $8 to rent a road, and $6 for a huge package of bait. You can save money and bring your own pole and bait if you already have it.

I just went along to take pictures, drink coffee, and enjoy the view. My husband fished for a few hours and caught two fish.

Historic Homes

All around the downtown area is many historic homes that you can look at and even take tours of. I just love looking at homes, so we drove by a few. My favorite was the Bishop’s Palace which is a beautiful old home with some really neat history. There is some other’s you can check out in the area too. Here is a list of the best ones including times you can tour.

There are so many other things to do in Galveston, but these are some great choices to check out! If you live in Texas, I recommend heading to Galveston at some point!

Definitely pinning! We’ve looked at cruises that leave out of Galveston, and now I want to fly in a few days early and enjoy the city itself too <3

I meet my husband there some 35 years ago. At the time we both lived and worked in Galveston. It is one of my fondest memories! I worked for a very famous restaurant at the time called Candies Italian Restaurant in old town Galveston, as well as the Hotel Galvez, and Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant on Seawall. I fell in love with my husband during Hurricane Alicia. He cooked me eggs over an open flame hurricane lantern the morning after the storm. Since then we have lived there on a few occasions when we traveled the country for 13 years, Rving of course. Yes Alexis, it is so beautiful there and a place I would tell all to add it to their bucket list of places to visit! As Candy always said, “once you get the sand between your toes, you will always come back!” Many thanks for letting me shared this with you.

Hi Connie! What a fun story! Galveston sounds like such a special place for you and your husband 🙂 That is exactly how Pensacola, FL is for my husband and I. He was stationed there when we first started dating, so we have some very special memories there!
