Today, I am sharing with you some fantastic washing machine hacks to keep it clean and mold-free!

As a chemist, I have been searching and testing many different things to use and do for your washing machine over the years. This includes different laundry detergent options that leave less residue, clean clothes better, and eliminate all the unnecessary additives.

The key for me when it comes to better for you laundry detergent is they still have to clean our clothes! Between having a baby, an active daughter in soccer and ballet, and a husband who brings home incredibly dirty clothes each day, our washing machine is in constant use.

Here are the things I do to keep it clean, mold-free, and make sure our clothes are clean too!

Washing Machine Hacks To Keep It Clean, Mold-Free, and Running Like New

chemistry cachet washing machine hacks and tips

1. Leave the washing machine door open after each use

Front loading and top loading washing machine doors should always be left open after each use. This allows the surface to air dry before closing the door on moisture. My washing machine installer told me this tip was the most important thing to do for keeping mold from forming in the seals especially for front loading washers.

2. Wipe off the seals and inside surfaces with a microfiber cloth

This tip has been really helpful for my washing machine! In addition to keeping the door open, you can grab a microfiber cloth and wipe inside the washing machine area. This is great for hidden areas like underneath the lid or inside the agitator if you have one.

3. Use an Eco-friendly, better laundry detergent

I mentioned above, I have been on an investigative search for better laundry detergent options. I have tried them all, made my own at home, and researched all the different formulas. These strips are a unique,  concentrated laundry detergent product that has powerful cleaning properties, but also good for sensitive skin. These non-toxic strips also save space and no mess! Since they don’t leave any residue in your washing machine, it keeps your machine running much better and doesn’t create build up like traditional detergents.

Plus, it cleans clothes really well. Below is a picture of washing some sweat pants with dirt on them with a Tru Earth strip in cold water.

4. Clean out the washing machine every few months and check the filter

If you want to keep your washing machine clean and mold-free, cleaning it out every few months is important. I love to use these fantastic washing machine cleaning pods from Grab Green. You add these to an empty bin and run on a hot cycle once per month.

Take out your filter and clean it every few months. Search you washing machine manufacturer to see where the filter is located.

I also make my all-purpose cleaner from the eBook on page 13 to clean all around the washing machine like the lid, around the bin, and any other spot that gets dirty.

5.Use less clothes per load

Most people know this, but this can really extend the life of your washing machine. It will also help your clothes get cleaner during the wash. I loosely fill the bin for each load. I try to do laundry more often through the week so it doesn’t get overwhelming. This is one of my top time management tips by the way.

6. Close zippers before adding to washing machine

Another important tip for keeping your washing machine clean is making sure it doesn’t get scratched or damaged. Zipping up clothing before adding to the wash can help with this! I also zip up my kid’s jackets before washing and also my husband’s pants too.

These washing machine hacks are so simple, but they will help your machine stay clean, mold-free, and extend the life of your machine too.

I do these things as it is but many don’t, I am a bit slack with cleaning the filter but this post has reminded me to do so.
