Waking up every day in your home with the sensation that you’re not truly at home is an awful feeling. Establishing your own presence in a home can be difficult, especially when you have a family. While Feng Shui might seem like a new-age trick that’s not worth your time, an abundance of research indicates the principles of Feng Shui work.
If you’re feeling exhausted and want to bring some new energy into your home, try these six simple tricks!
Invite in Fresh Air and Light
When you’re feeling groggy or out of sorts, throw open the curtains to let some light in. Sunlight naturally wakes up our senses from head to toe, so if possible, sleep with your curtains open to rise with the sun. When you make your way downstairs, open a window near where you’ll sit for your morning coffee or tea. Fresh air, especially chill air, forces our body to become alert.
You’ll feel much more in tune with nature when you wake up to a light and a chill breeze instead of Bon Jovi blaring on your alarm clock.
Invest in Beautiful Storage
A cluttered house leads to a cluttered mind. Studies have shown that physical clutter, such as paperwork, dirty dishes and un-stored belongings, has a way of disrupting our minds. Having chaos around you limits your ability to focus on the tasks at hand, and if things are really out of control, the clutter may just overwhelm you so much you won’t know how to start cleaning it up.
Analyze your house one room at a time to pinpoint where you need to address a clutter issues. By investing in cute and fashionable storage to hide your Tupperware or shoes, you’ll keep your life more controlled and balanced.
Take the Time to Arrange Your Furniture
The art of creating a comfortable and inviting space revolves around placing the right furniture in the right room. For example, if you have a small living space, don’t try to cram a huge sectional into it. You’ll want to find a piece that is smaller but still comfortable for you and your friends or houseguests.
Arranging your furniture to promote energy and flow is a task best done in phases — don’t try to arrange your entire house in one weekend! You’ll end up feeling overwhelmed and will quit before you get anywhere.
Find Good Smells for Good Vibes
Does the smell of coffee perk you up in the morning? You don’t have to suffer through the rest of the day without those little boots of energy! Essential oils are perfect for aromatherapy use to banish stress and promote higher energy without caffeine or pills.
If you’re looking to diminish pet smells or cooking odors, you can even create your own room spray with essential oils. Lemon or orange, lavender and bergamot are all ideal for lifting your senses and spirit!
Bring Nature Indoors
Houseplants are a beautiful way to add some color and life into your home. Plants refresh the spirit and allow us to tap into our inner nurturing traits without investing too much time. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can find numerous plants that don’t require much maintenance.
Those who want a no-maintenance design that invites good energy into homes can place a bowl of oranges or lemons on a desk or kitchen table.
Master the Art of Illusion
You can’t make your house look larger and more open — or can you? With a simple makeover with mirrors, your house can look larger and more elegant!
Mirrors should be used to exemplify something you love. Place a mirror where a window will be reflected or where plants will be showcased. A mirror should reflect positive energy, not negative. Mirrors will work to create a sophisticated feel in your home without becoming overbearing.
These six ideas are just the beginning of what you can do to create harmony and balance in your home. Reading up on Feng Shui principles will provide you with a foundation to move forward in creating a beautiful and comfortable home!

Good tips… I definitely like to open the windows and draperies when it’s a nice day out. After a lot of days with windows closed, it’s good to do an “air exchange”. I just have to remember to close the windows before the heater kicks on in the late afternoon! We have a lot of succulent plants in the house. They are the only things to survive my greenish/black thumb.

I love having that air exchange too! Especially when the house has been closed up for months!! Makes such a great difference!

Really cute and easy tips. I bought a feng shui book a few years ago when I lived in an apartment. I will have to dig it up to help with decorating our new home.

I did a lot of that in my apartment too! I have been trying to work on that stuff in our house, it makes it so much more inviting!
