So, what does a modern day chemist do Chemistry can be fun! chemistrycachet.com

This week I am sharing some of my favorite chocolate inspiration. Recipes, nutrition, etc.

Today I thought I would share with you a question I get asked often…What do you do?

What do I do? Well, that is a good question! What does a modern day chemist really do and how does it pertain to this blog? Especially since I share so many different things on the blog, it appears that my taste is very eclectic. Which is very true, I have many passions, hobbies and things that bring joy to my life.

A modern day chemist chemistrycachet.comI studied chemistry and mathematics in college, but I never really knew “what I wanted to be when I grew up.” I just knew I loved math and science, and I was good at it. As a bonus, I also studied horticulture (gardening) and even ornithology (birds).

What totally fascinated me with chemistry though, was the fact that every process, every element and every living thing on earth is made up of chemistry. Our own bodies would fall apart without millions of chemical processes happening every second. On top of that, two of my most favorite things in the word, chocolate and coffee, are made into things we love all with chemistry.

[Tweet “Chocolate and Coffee are the best types of chemistry!”]

That is why I chose chocolate as my final research project in college. I learned so many things about it, it is always one of my favorite things to share with you.

What a Chemist Does chemistrycachet.comAnyways, back to what I do. During the last few semesters of school, I started tutoring other college students in advanced chemistry and math. It started out as just a hobby, buy I really enjoyed helping others. Since then, I have tutored for very large firms online and locally.

I also edit and write for an academic company.

A few months ago, I decided it was time to put all my academic consulting together in one place, so I started a website for all those services. You probably see that on my sidebar: Academic Consulting.

Blogging was something that has been in the back of my mind for almost a year. I always help friends and family garden, bake and work on projects. I decided it would be great to do the same for anyone.

Another thing I am passionate about is health and nutrition. I have shared with you now a few different posts on Rheumatoid Arthritis and health in general. Sharing and helping others who are also struggling with this is another thing I love doing on this blog.

This brings me back to chemistry…medicine, nutrition and health are all possible due to chemistry!

So, what do I do? I am a chemist, writer, editor, tutor, consultant and blogger 🙂

[Tweet “What a modern day chemist really does!”]

I love that chemistry is responsible for all the things we love to do. Especially in the blogging world of baking, cooking, crafting, gardening, and health. And just for fun, here is a picture of me walking across the stage 🙂

Walking the stage chemistrycachet.comI would love to know, what do you do? I love learning more about all my readers and friends.

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Alexis, chemistry has always fasinated me but I am terrible at chemistry equations LOL.
For 23 years I worked at a…….chemical manufacturing. Eastman Chemical in Longview, TX. I am terrible at theory but I am great at learning a process and how all those P&IDs come together in a plant. Now I work at an electric power plant ! And I am studying to be a Health Coach. For someone who hates chemistry, I sure keep pushing myself to the edge of it.

That is so neat! I have worked with many people who work at chemical manufacturing plants. And I have also worked at power plants and with them too! That is big in our area. Well if you ever need chemistry help on your next venture, feel free to give me a shout! I love helping others with it 🙂 And good luck! That is great!

Happy Wednesday Alexis! You are also a Christ lover, wife, and dog mom… I know you love to do a lot of things… that’s great to have varied interests. I haven’t decided what I want to be when I “grow up” – I’m growing older, though. I have worked mainly in administrative/managerial capacities in (oddly) all sorts of construction-related fields. My hobbies include crocheting, jewelry making, exercising. a bit of gardening, some cooking/baking, and volunteering with my local K9 group. I am one of Jesus’ works in progress too. I’m SO GLAD He has so much patience with me! Have a great day!

I think the average person doesn’t realize how much chemistry is involved in our average lives. Of course, my hair stylist is an incredible chemist with what she does to lighten my dark hair. I loved hearing about what you do and do plan to do my own post someday!

You are so right! Most people have no idea how everything is involved with chemistry…and hair coloring is for sure the ultimate chemistry experimentation 🙂 I look forward to reading your post when you write it!

Okay, I have a question for you. I was in a debate with someone this past weekend and I’m going to ask you the professional. Decaf coffee and regular coffee… are chemicals used to take the caffeine out of coffee, therefore, making it not healthy for you? Thanks Alexis for sharing this on Tuesday Talk and look forward to your answer.

I love this question! I did an entire study on decaf and it was amazing to me that they use Carbon Dioxide to extract the caffeine! We determined it was better to drink the naturally caffeinated version. Carbon Dioxide won’t harm you in small quantities, but I would much rather have a natural version. I think this would be great to do a post over 🙂

Hi Alexis, That is exactly what I went to school for is my Assoc. in Nutrition. My last semester I had O-Chem, and I loved it! My son’s a sophomore in HS, and his goal is to help work on a cure for Diabetes. He loves science {he needs to work on math a little, but I told him the formulas in Chemistry don’t change much
} and as this is his first year of Chemistry he is loving it so far! Have a beautiful weekend!

That is so neat! I love organic chemistry. My favorite class in college was qualitative organic analysis where we had an unknown chemical and had to determine what is was from a series of organic tests! Good luck to your son…I love math too. Most of my upper level chemistry classes were more math than anything, so it is definitely important. Thanks for much for sharing with me! Have a great day!

I am a chemist too. I work in an environmental lab. I started in the extractions lab with all of the glassware and solvents that people may think of when they hear chemist. Then I ran a variety of instruments. The lab tests for all sorts of contaminants in all sorts of matrices, so every day is a new adventure! I also like to experiment in the kitchen, that is my favorite kind of chemistry!

That is so awesome Carlee! I love meeting other chemists! Sometimes I miss being the chemistry lab, I always loved it. One of my favorite aspects of the lab was on the qualitative side, finding the unknown chemicals. It was always a mystery to solve…I almost went into forensics since I enjoyed it so much. I have to agree though, the kitchen is probably my favorite chemistry lab. Thanks so much for connecting!
