If you have followed Chemistry Cachet for awhile, you know a big part of our lives is Ruger.
In honor of National Pet Week, we are sharing why having a dog makes you happy!
Chemistry Cachet is all about the science, and there are actually scientific reasons why owning a dog makes you a happier person!
First, let me tell you a story about how amazing dogs are, even for your health.
When my husband was in the Marine Corps, he spent many months in the hospital. Shortly after we got married in 2007, his health issues began and escalated quickly.
After he had his colon removed, he was in so much severe pain, he truly felt like he made a horrible mistake. I can’t even imagine the suffering he went through being cut open like that! I did everything I could to make him comfortable and lift his spirits, but it was difficult.
{Us walking around after one of his surgeries…this was before fancy iphone cameras lol my mom snapped this with a blackberry, but I love she captured it}
The second day after surgery, I stepped out into the hallway and noticed the pet therapy dogs walking towards us. I immediately had a smile on my face, and knew my husband needed to see the dog. So, she walked the dog in, and my husband starting smiling. We pet the dog for awhile, and I could see his mood already boosted.
I made sure the pet therapy dogs came by to see us everyday.
And it wasn’t just my husband who benefited. So many wounded active duty and disabled veterans took part of pet therapy. They also had programs for those missing limbs to get a dog trained just for them.
It was so special to be a part of and see how these sweet dogs changed peoples lives.
Ruger has been such a blessing for my husband and I over the years. My husband still struggles with health problems, but Ruger is always there to greet him after a rough day.
I was inspired by PuppySpot to share this really neat graphic with you about the science behind why having a dog makes you happy and improves your health!
They have a great program for finding your favorite breed, you can learn more on their Puppies for Sale page.

Yes, yes and YES! I’ve had a pet pretty much my entire life and I went through a short period in college when I didn’t have one and I noticed a huge change in my mood so I got my pup and even on my saddest days, he makes them so much better! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

Had no clue it was National Pet Day but you’re so right in the joy pets bring to our life. We just got a therapy puppy at work and he’s so adorable. Even through Lola can be a mischievous bugger, we couldn’t imagine life without her.

They do bring so much joy! Even though they can get into trouble too lol

I don’t know what I’d do without my dog. She’s such a sweetie and I love how excited she is to see me after a long day at work. That’s great your husband was able to benefit from a therapy dog while in the hospital.

I didn’t know it was National Pet Week! Growing up I was so afraid of dogs. Now I’ve had dogs as pets for 15 years – what a blessing they are – who rescued who?! I’m so thrilled so see how the therapy dogs can do so much for those in need. So glad that pet therapy is a part of your lives! And let’s not forget the service dogs, too – police, search and rescue. So thankful for my dogs. Thanks for the chart from Puppyspot.

Dogs are awesome!! We have 5 and I don’t know what I would do without them! I also volunteer at an animal shelter and I just love cuddling with the puppies and seeing how happy both people and dog are when they adopt. Thank you for sharing your story. Pinning!

I totally agree! I have no idea what we would do without them, they are so wonderful! That is so cool you volunteer at an animal shelter! I helped with one in college and wanted to bring every single dog home lol Thanks Pamela!

Such a wonderful story and so true. I have been in the hospital before and when I saw the therapy do in the hallway I started to cry, not only because I missed my Beagle but because I love dogs so much and just their prescence is so healing. I smiled for the 1st time in weeks and I felt like everything was going to be ok.

Thank you! That is such a neat story! I have felt the same way too!
