Today we are talking about why you need to add sunscreen to your skincare routine ASAP!

Before I started getting into anti-aging skincare, I typically just threw on some face cream, maybe a little foundation, and that was it. I always had great skin without blemishes, so I never worried much about treating my skin. I am also naturally tan thanks to my grandmother’s Native American descent, so I never worried about sunscreen either. I rarely burn!

Why You Need to Add Sunscreen to Your Skincare Routine ASAP!

Why You Need to Add Sunscreen To Your Skincare Routine ASAP

I started getting serious about sun protection in my later 20s…

A few years ago, I had a freckle on my face checked out that had been bothering me for awhile. It turned out to be skin cancer! I was totally blown away because I have never been sensitive to the sun.

After this happened and as I approached 30, I decided to start digging deeper into the cosmetic side of chemistry to take better care of my skin. My goal in skincare is to prevent aging and improve the overall health of my skin, especially on my face!

That is why today I want to share with you this important topic on why you need to add sunscreen to your skincare routine PLUS the best type to use to prevent clogging your pores or irritating your skin.

Sunscreen is Important For Any Age

Sunscreen (discount code alexisroch) (you can use the discount code for 35% off right now and free shipping!) is important for all the skin on your body, but it is even more important for your face.

The sun ages skin prematurely due to the UV rays, and it can also cause skin cancer later on down to the road. Or in my case, your 20s!

Although everyone should be adding sunscreen to their routine, those who use any type of anti-aging serums or exfoliants need it even more.

What Type of Sunscreen to Use for Face

For the last few years, I have tried out dozens of sunscreens for my face to use under makeup. Almost all of them cause my skin to itch really bad or they cause the makeup to clump. Organic sunscreens have been even worse for me. The last one I tried caused my skin to turn blood red and it took weeks to get better!

I love testing stuff for my readers to make sure I share products that actually work, and I really love this mineral sunscreen (code alexisroch) from FRÉ. Not only is it sunscreen with SPF 30, but it is also a moisturizer, and it is completely clean. You won’t get clogged pores like many other sunscreens.

It protects your skin with broad-spectrum SPF30 MINERAL sunscreen and doesn’t leave a white cast! It is also:

  • water-resistant, so it will not drip off while you sweat.
  • ophthalmologist tested to not sting your eyes.
  • non-comedogenic, so it will not clog your pores.
  • ideal for all skin types.

Here is some more science behind this:

  • Non-nano zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum SPF30 mineral sun protection.
  • Argania Active Complex protects and repairs skin from sun damage and premature aging while restoring hydration.
  • Tocopherol, a form of Vitamin E, protects the skin from free radicals plus soothes and nourishes, leaving your skin protected and hydrated.
  • NO added synthetic fragrance. PROTECT ME’s fresh natural scent comes from essential oils.
  • Is reef-safe. Because it’s a mineral sunscreen, the formula is non-toxic to coral reefs and marine life.

How I Use Sunscreen in My Skincare Routine

I did an Instagram story about this recently, but I wanted to share with you again in this post. I change up my routine a little bit from winter to summer, but here is my quick summer routine.

First, I wash or rinse my face when I wake up. I apply vitamin C (code alexisroch) all over my face, this one acts as a makeup primer too! Then I will use my SPF 30. I also use the tinted moisturizer. If I don’t plan on wearing makeup that day, I will opt for the tinted moisturizer which gives me a great glow. Both use the SPF 30.

You can use makeup after applying the SPF.

If you plan on being in the sun for awhile, be sure to reapply this sunscreen every few hours. You can just add it to the top of your foundation.

Read more about layering skincare products in this post.

More on Using a Tinted SPF

I also love using a tinted SPF for no makeup days. I did an Instagram reel you can check out here. Use code alexisroch at checkout for 35% off and free shipping too.

The tinted SPF has the same sunscreen as the regular one, but it has a little tint to it. I use the medium/deep for my skin tone, but they also have a light one to use. This gives a little color and glow to your skin.

Here are some more tips on why sunscreen is extra important in your routine!

Beware if you use AHAs in Skincare

AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids are incredible for your skin and anti-aging prevention. These acids can be natural or chemically derived, but they all work the same way. They exfoliate dead skin skin cells quickly to make skin brighter, more youthful, increase collagen production, and even out texture.

Some of my favorites are lactic acid and citric acid. Read more about citric acid for your skin in this post.

Although these acids are fantastic for skin, they drastically increase your sensitivity to the sun. Using AHAs will make your skin more vulnerable, so it is VERY important to protect your skin every time you go outside. If you don’t do this, it can make these AHAs age your skin prematurely.

Stay tuned for more awesome information on AHAs!!

What about retinols?

I also love retinols for the skin when it comes to anti-aging. Retinols are light sensitive and can break down in the sun, but they don’t necessarily increase your skins sensitivity.

Retinols should only be used at night because if you use them in the day, they can break down in the sunlight making them lose their effectiveness.

Other Exfoliants

Basically, any type of exfoliation you do will make your skin more vulnerable to the sun.

Which means everyone really needs to add sunscreen to their skincare routine!

SPF is sooo important. My daily moisturizer only has SPF 30 but I love the one you recommended has SPF 50 and is such a great price! Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis
