I have tested out several different hydroxyapatite toothpaste brands the past year, here is one I found that works great, making teeth feel so clean. I am also sharing my chemist point of view on why you should switch to hydroxyapatite toothpaste.
Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste

Today we are sharing why you should switch to hydroxyapatite toothpaste.

Many readers have asked me to cover this topic, so I started by trying several different brands. I found one I really enjoy that actually made my teeth feel clean too!

Bonus, the Wellnesse Brand uses micro-hydroxyapatite. The small microns are naturally sourced, non-toxic and more effective compared to many competitors who use the nano-hydroxyapatite (you can read more on this below).

Why You Should Switch To Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste

What Is Hydroxyapatite toothpaste?

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral in the form of calcium phosphate that makes up about 50% of the volume and 70% of the weight of human dentin and enamel. In toothpaste, it’s often used in a nano-sized form (n-HA) or a micron sized. Micron size is more effective at remineralizing teeth, reducing sensitivity, and healing cavities.  It is also naturally sourced. Nano-Hydroxyapatite cannot be sourced naturally, so finding a brand with micro-hydroxyapatite was another important factor for this toothpaste.

How Does It Work For Teeth?

Hydroxyapatite toothpaste works by remineralization. The micro-hydroxyapatite particles can fill in microscopic defects and cracks in the enamel, helping to rebuild and strengthen it.

It also helps with plaque inhibition. It can bind to plaque and bacteria, potentially making it harder for them to adhere to teeth. This in turn helps with bad breath too!

Another benefit is sensitivity reduction. By remineralizing the enamel and potentially blocking exposed dentinal tubules, it can help reduce tooth sensitivity.

Some studies suggest it can help whiten teeth short-term and long-term by filling in surface imperfections and reducing staining.

How does this benefit your teeth?

If you are wanting or needing to avoid fluoride, this makes a great option! Since it’s a natural component of teeth, it’s considered very biocompatible and safe to swallow.

Many people have a great reduction in tooth sensitivity.   I personally have sensitive teeth, and I have been trying to find a product to use that will keep my teeth clean and white without being so harsh. The traditional toothpaste I have been using has not worked, and if anything made it worse over the years. My dentist told me that whitening toothpaste with fluoride can continue to erode my gum area, which is the cause of my tooth sensitivity. This is what brought me to the topic of hydroxyapatite toothpaste to begin with.

Unlike some antibacterial oral products or extra harsh toothpastes, it may not kill beneficial bacteria in the mouth making it great for your overall oral microbiome.

If you want better whitening naturally, this can also benefit your teeth due to the plaque inhibition and remineralization it provides. Since using this product, my teeth look brighter!

The Drawback To Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste

During my time testing out several different brands, the one drawback I discovered was my teeth didn’t feel clean. This also seemed to be the number one complaint from readers I talked with. Hydroxyapatite toothpaste does come with a slightly higher price tag due to its unique creation and sourcing. However, its effectiveness, coupled with the fact that less is needed per use, making each tube last longer, makes it entirely worthwhile in my opinion.

I am happy to say, the Wellnesse brand I tested DID make my teeth feel super clean and white! The texture of this toothpaste was much thicker than the other brands I tested which made a big difference. This is also the Micro-Hydroxyapatite form, making it naturally sourced and non-toxic. I have been using it for 3 months straight and my teeth continue to feel clean and look extra white.

Can Children Use It?

They do make a children’s option you can check out here! My daughter is seven, and she loves it! It has a great strawberry flavor. We go to the dentist every six months for check ups, so make sure you are taking your kids regularly to the dentist in addition to oral care at home.

Tips On Using Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste

Here are some helpful tips I have discovered when using this type of toothpaste.

First, make sure you gently squeeze and slightly massage the tube. This toothpaste is much thicker than the traditional toothpaste you might be used to. It can make it harder to get out of the tube. But I have found that gently squeezing and moving the paste around warms it up and makes it easier to squeeze out!

You don’t need a large amount of toothpaste. This is thicker in texture, so you really only need a pea sized amount to clean all of your teeth well.

The lid can form a crust where the toothpaste comes out (thicker than traditional toothpaste), but you can simply run it under hot water to loosen and remove.

Conclusion:

Wellnesse Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is simple, effective, and works fantastic! If you are looking to switch to hydroxyapatite toothpaste, this is the best.

** As a reminder, you must always check with your dental provider when it comes to any dental concerns. I am a chemist sharing my scientific and ingredient point of view along with personal experience. I always go to my dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups.

I love that you are bringing this to your reader’s attention. I’ve been using HA toothpaste for years. When I mentioned it to my dentist, unbelievably, he’d never heard of it!

Oh wow! My friend is a dentist and she was telling me about some of the research behind it. It made me want to try it out too. It’s really been so helpful for sensitive teeth. And my teeth look so white too! It’s great

I have been wanting to try this type of toothpaste for awhile. I actually did try a brand a few months ago, but it was really thin and the taste as not good either. I am going to give this one a shot! Thanks so much for this post

I found a brand on Amazon that comes in tablet form. You wet your toothbrush, chew up the tablet, don’t swallow and brush away. I add a tiny amount of my regular toothpaste to my toothbrush for more foaming action.

Which brand did you try? I’ve tried the DUO hydroxyapatite tablets on Amazon. But since they are nano-hydroxyapatite I switched to this one which is micro. But the hydroxyapatite is definitely a fantastic way to keep your teeth clean in all forms 🙂

This is definitely true. I use it everyday with a tiny amount of my regular fluoride toothpaste to get the benefits of both. My dentist and hygienist are on board with this. I definitely recommend using it.

It’s great! It’s awesome your dentist is on board with it too. Many of my readers have said their dental care provider wasn’t even familiar with it!

The Bioniq brand is stellar and has 2x the concentration of hap, plus the price is compelling. Plus I am on board with the inactive ingredients.

Keep up the great work. Alexis!

Thanks for sharing! I haven’t found this brand yet. Do you know if they use nano or micro?

Interesting, the literature seems to suggest that nano is way more effective than micro (and my, albeit vague, recollections from my mineralogy classes also point towards nano being more effective than micro).
The ressource below covers it: https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1944/14/17/4865
I personally use David’s toothpaste (have for years)and like it a lot. Makes my teeth feel nice and clean, the taste options are great and the tube is recyclable.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the study above. (Your website is one of my favorite ressources, btw!)

Thanks! Micro is the only naturally source option for Hydroxyapatite. I have one source linked for this in the post. Micro is more effective at remineralizing. My friend is a dentist and she is the one who told me if I was going to use hydroxyapatite, it needed to be micro which was harder to find. This brand Wellnesse has a great website that had a lot of these details too. Let me know if I can answer anything else!
