The Ultimate Millennial Birthday Party: A 90s Sleepover-Inspired 40th Celebration

Some friendships deserve more than a birthday dinner.

When my best friend turned 40 a few weeks ago, I wanted to throw a party that celebrated not only her birthday, but also the memories that shaped our childhood. Jessica was my best friend from 1988 and beyond. I wanted to do something extra special for her.

The inspiration came from the countless birthday sleepovers and weekend slumber parties we shared throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Like many girls growing up during that era, some of our best memories were made staying up way too late, listening to music, eating junk food, playing games, and laughing until we couldn’t breathe.

But one photo in particular kept bringing us back (picture above). In 1996, we took a back-to-school slumber party picture in my parent’s entry way that perfectly captured our friendship and that moment in time. When planning this surprise 40th birthday celebration, we decided it would be fun to recreate that photo 30 years later and build the entire party around the memories of those sleepovers that defined our childhood.

So instead of a traditional birthday party, we decided to bring back the summer of 1996.

The theme was simple: Made in the 80s, Raised in the 90s.

From the decorations to the food, music, games, and even our outfits, every detail was inspired by the decade that defined our childhood. The result was one of the most fun parties I’ve ever planned, and it instantly transported us back to those carefree summer nights when life revolved around sleepovers, rollerskating, and pizza rolls.

If you want to throw a 90s inspired party, here are some of the things we did you can recreate. I will share all the things I found, already had, and some of the local businesses I used to help this come together.

The best part about the 90s is everything was simple! Not pinterest worthy, not over the top. Just special and in the moment which is exactly the vibe we wanted for Jessica.

The T-Shirts

We thought about buying some T-shirts, but I really wanted something that captured our friendship exactly. So I did a mock up of all of our favorite 90s things and added a Happy 40th Birthday to it. Christina Monk who owns Monkette Designs in Stephenville was able to print the T-shirt exactly like we wanted. It turned out so cute!! You can see them well in all the photos of us.

The 90s Cake

I came up with an idea of a 90s cake that had all of our favorite things on it, and my friend Courtney had the perfect cake person in mind. Jordyn Lopez with Sweet Creations created exactly what we had in mind! I couldn’t believe how cute it turned out. Courtney also found some cute Little Cake Toppers to add around it.

90s-Themed Party Décor

I started with colorful 90s Themed Table Clothes I found on Amazon. Not only did they cover the tables, but I also hung several of them on the walls to create an inexpensive backdrop filled with bright colors and fun 90s designs. Pink Metallic Streamers added even more nostalgia and gave the room that classic birthday-party feel we all remember from growing up.

We also had these 90s Party Hanging Decorations everywhere. They had cute sayings like 90s kid, roller skates, cassette tapes, and it comes in a large package so we had plenty to cover all the spaces. We also added some Disco Balls which were huge for us at 90s sleepovers! Be sure to head to this idea list to find all the items I purchased.

Posters Everywhere

No 90s party would be complete without posters!

I purchased a few iconic posters from Amazon, including a Britney Spears Poster and a Clueless Poster. To fill the room even more, I created additional posters using favorite 90s images and had them printed at Walgreens. This turned out to be one of the easiest and most affordable ways to decorate a large space while adding personal touches that everyone recognized and loved.

I also picked out some of my favorite photos from my best friend and I growing up along with that classic 1996 slumber party photo and printed those out as posters!

Between the store-bought posters and the custom prints, every wall had something that reminded us of growing up in the 90s.

Childhood Treasures From the 90s

To make the party feel even more authentic, I dug through some of my old keepsakes.

I displayed CDs I had saved over the years, which brought back memories of listening to our favorite music on repeat. I also incorporated my own 90s trolls along with these Cute 90s mini Trolls and Barbie dolls throughout the room. These little details became some of the biggest conversation starters as everyone pointed out toys they remembered having as kids. I even brought some of my old Lisa Frank folders to display around the tables.

The Inflatable Chair Everyone Loved

One decoration that got more attention than I expected was a classic Inflatable Chair. If you grew up in the late 90s or early 2000s, chances are you either had one or desperately wanted one. I was able to find one on Amazon, and it was the perfect spot for my friend to open her gifts.

It added the perfect finishing touch to the party space and made the room feel like a giant grown-up sleepover. It also ended up in quite a few photos throughout the night.

A Nostalgic 90s Time Capsule

The best part about decorating for a 90s-themed party is that it doesn’t have to be perfectly coordinated. The more colorful, playful, and nostalgic it feels, the better.

By combining affordable decorations with real pieces from our childhood, the entire party felt like stepping back into the late 90s and early 2000s—the perfect setting to celebrate four decades of friendship and memories.

The Food: All Our Favorite 90s Snacks

When it came to the food, we kept things simple and focused on the snacks and treats that instantly reminded us of sleepovers, birthday parties, and after-school hangouts from the 90s.

The Main Snacks

We served a few classic crowd-pleasers that many millennials practically survived on growing up. Pizza rolls and taquitos were at the top of the list and disappeared quickly! We also included a vegetable tray my mom was always famous for. To this day, no one can beat her veggie trays!

To wash it all down, we enjoyed our favorites from back then, Capri Suns.

A Candy Table Full of Nostalgia

One of the most popular parts of the party was the candy table. We filled it with many of our favorite treats from the 90s, and it quickly became a gathering spot as everyone reminisced about their childhood favorites.

I found most of the 90s themed candy at Five Below. Some of the candy included:

Creme Savers
Reese’s Pieces
Sour Patch Kids
Sour Punch Straws
Ring Pops

It was amazing how quickly everyone started sharing stories after spotting a favorite candy from their childhood. Some of these treats hadn’t been enjoyed in years, but they instantly brought back memories of school lunches, convenience store runs, movie nights, and birthday parties.

The 90s Games

I wish we had more time during the party, but since we all had kids and husbands to get back to, we chose Twister. We played that game for hours and hours during every slumber party. We laughed so hard at how small the mat was compared to how it was back then lol!

Other Classic 90s Party Games

While Twister was our main event, there were plenty of other games that would fit perfectly into a 90s-themed party if you’re planning one of your own.

Many of these games became staples at birthday parties and sleepovers throughout the 90s and early 2000s, and they’re just as fun today.

Lastly, The Music

We picked our favorite 90s artists, and put together the ultimate 90s birthday party playlist. It spanned from 1992-1999. I had it blasting the entire time, even when we sang happy birthday since this was such a quintessential party of our 90s childhoods.

A Night We’ll Never Forget

As the night came to an end, we couldn’t stop talking about how much fun it was to revisit the memories that shaped our friendship. Between the 90s music, childhood snacks, Twister, and recreating a photo from nearly 30 years ago, it felt like we had stepped back in time for one unforgettable evening.

The best part was being reminded that some friendships only get better with age.

If you’re a fellow millennial, I highly recommend gathering your friends and throwing your own 90s-themed party. Dust off those old photos, turn on the Backstreet Boys, grab some pizza rolls, and relive a little bit of the magic that made growing up in the 90s so special.
